DELTA 8 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Minato-ku, Tokyo, Kantō on May 3rd, 2024 as the second of three major/supermajor tournaments of the 2024 Golden Week.
Tournament summary
Many upsets took place in pools, most notably #66 seed Rarikkusu upsetting #2 seed Sparg0 2-0 (upset factor 11). Other upsets include #138 seed Maipan upsetting #10 seed Tea 2-0 (upset factor 8) and #73 seed Yn upsetting #9 seed Asimo 1-2 (upset factor 6). In addition, several prominent Japanese players failed to make it out of pools, including #18 seed Neo, who lost to #146 seed U 1-2 (upset factor 6) and #271 seed US 0-2 (upset factor 8) to place 129th; #37 seed Jogibu, who lost to #92 seed Tarakotori 0-2 and #101 seed Syadou 0-2 to place 97th; #38 seed Kome, who lost to #91 seed Kuhaku 1-2 and #59 seed Reno 0-2 to place 129th; and #46 seed Hero, who lost to #83 seed Crete 1-2 and #14 seed Zackray 1-2 to place 65th. Finally, the only notable international player who failed to make it out of pools was #32 seed MKBigBoss, who lost to #33 seed Shirayuki 0-2 and #65 seed Rimu 0-2 for 65th.
The main bracket saw several notable runs from players who were not expected to make it as far as they did. This included #56 seed Leaf, who after being upset by Yn saw a strong Loser's run eliminating #41 seed Eim 2-1, #53 seed takera 3-2, #36 seed BassMage 3-0, and #13 seed Maister 3-2 to place 17th, the best Robin run at a supermajor; Maipan, who after defeating Tea also defeated #67 seed 33Peranbox and eliminated seed Zackray for 17th; and #31 Lv.1, who saw arguably the best tournament run of his career so far by eliminating Tea 3-1, Sparg0 3-1 (upset factor 7), and #3 seed Hurt 3-1 (upset factor 6) to make top 8. On the other hand, a few other notable players failed to meet their seed by a notable margin. This included Asimo, who lost to #44 seed Aiko 2-3 (upset factor 4) for 49th; #19 seed Toriguri, who fell in Zackray's Loser's run for 49th; and Hurt, who placed 9th, his first sub-top 8 placement of the season. On the other hand, this marked #11 seed MkLeo's best run at a Japanese event up to that point, as he was able to place his seed after losing to Shuton 3-0 (extending Shuton's game record over MkLeo to 12-0) and #23 seed Akakikusu. MkLeo ultimately became the highest-placing international player at the tournament, with Sparg0, Glutonny, and Zomba placing 13th (Glutonny notably losing the runback against Carmelo and Zomba being reverse 3-0'd by both Raru and TamaPDaifuku); Maister and Kinaji placing 25th; BassMage placing 33rd; and U placing 49th.
In top 8, acola lost his first set of the season, losing 3-1 to Miya in Winner's Semi-Finals. acola easily ran through the rest of the bracket to meet Miya in Grand Finals, where he won both sets 3-1 and 3-2, winning his second "premier" event of the season.
The sheer amount of upsets gave many Japanese players new player values for LumiRank, and as a result around 500 points were added to the player point system. Not only did this allow DELTA 8 to maintain its "premier" status on LumiRank, but it also had an impact on many previous Japanese tournaments, including retiering UltCore Second, Sumabato SP 45, and Maesuma'U22 to A-tier, therefore giving Glutonny an additional major win and Miya two additional major wins.
