SmashWiki:Administrators' noticeboard

Revision as of 17:51, April 21, 2024 by Alex the weeb (talk | contribs) (→‎Sockpuppet reports: idk if anyone still reads this page, but I guess I'll put this here just in case)

The Administrators' noticeboard is intended to be a page to quickly alert the administrators to issues that need their attention.

To make a request or statement, create a new section and provide a neutral, precise summary of events with thought-out reasoning, and, if possible, links to any pages with relevant discussions. It is also a good idea to notify any users involved with the request with a link to the section on this page. Make sure to add new sections to the bottom.

Report vandals and sockpuppets at the top of the appropriate section labeled for such reports using {{IP|Username}}, where Username is the name of the user or the IP vandal's IP address.

For reporting similar and unacceptable usernames, a talk page was formerly used to keep the reports in one place instead of on this page. For future reports, they will be kept under the "Inappropriate usernames" section on this page to keep the reports centralized on the same page.

ZeldaStarfoxfan2164 (talk) is made in America 11:18, November 21, 2023 (EST) 86.18.61.190 (talk · contribs · logs · block user · block log · WHOIS) Inappropriate edits to Ken (SSBU). Repeat offender. --CanvasK (talk) 11:54, January 9, 2023 (EST)

24 hours later and nothing. To elaborate, this IP previously made an edit to Pyra (SSBU) to change a quote to her eating babies and on Ken (SSBU) they made an extensive edit about rape. Tyrant, Aidan, Toomai, and Serpent all appeared in the online list at some point after this submission and the IP was not dealt with. Tyrant blocked another IP for vandalism after the above IP was reported; I also reported that other IP 4 days ago and no action was taken against them. Aidan appeared online at the same time as Tyrant when the other IP was blocked and made edits later on. Why is this page being ignored? --CanvasK (talk) 12:56, January 10, 2023 (EST)
To put it simply (and partially summarizing a previous discussion had with OT), it's just that much easier to ping us on Discord to alert us to a vandalizing IP. A majority of the userbase uses Discord to interact with other wiki members and notify the admins of anything (vandals or otherwise), so this page has kind of lost its original function. Notice that you have submitted nearly all of the reports in this section—everyone else has pinged the admins on Discord, and those are swiftly taken care of because it's something we can all see easily and thus take care of. Aidan the Celebratory Gamer 13:30, January 10, 2023 (EST)
I'm well aware that discord is faster, what I'm getting at now is that there was nothing; doesn't matter if it is a fast response, I'm expecting a response. Days, weeks, sometimes months go by and submissions here are ignored until someone else pings you all on discord. You all can easily see this page too, its on the sidebar and (I would hope) your watchlist for easy access. What is expected of new users who want to report something? Will they use the clearly labeled admin noticeboard and be ignored or will they download a third-party app to report it? If they are forced to do the latter, I can bet that a few will either not put in the effort and let someone else do it or go to an admin's talk page. --CanvasK (talk) 13:49, January 10, 2023 (EST)
Just get on Discord already, I'll reiterate again that this page is obsolete for vandal reporting when we got a tool like Discord available that all of the admins use, wikimedia diehards can huff and puff that we're telling people to use a technically third-party service (that the vast majority of people already use) over an onwiki function, but posting on wiki pages just cannot compete with real time direct notification for urgent matters. By continuing to adamantly insist on using this page instead of just going on Discord, at best the vandals still get a delayed response that allows them to vandalize more, because no one sane is going to be spending their time refreshing wiki pages 24/7, at worst the vandal goes completely missed. Also just because I'm shown as online here does not mean I was on refreshing recent changes, much less the noticeboard, most of the time it's probably just me having a tab open on some wiki page. "I can bet that a few will either not put in the effort and let someone else do it or go to an admin's talk page."
You answer your own question: the admin talk pages are also readily available for people to go to, which arguably is on the same level of direct notification as Discord due to the giant bar at the top of the wiki saying "you have an unread message on your talk page". Aidan the Celebratory Gamer 14:18, January 10, 2023 (EST)
To Tyrant's response,
I don't expect anyone to be on here 24/7 because people have jobs, groceries, and sleep. The below IP went 3 days without being blocked; 72 hours where any of you could have checked the noticeboard or your watchlist or possibly your email. Be done with sleep, work, and chores, get on the wiki as you are wont to do, and click one link to see if there is anything new. Is that too much to ask?
And I'm well aware that one can appear online for the smallest of things. Serpent rarely appears and I typically only see Toomai once a day in the morning. There's a reason why I explicitly mentioned you. You were actively online blocking a vandal that appeared a mere hour after I made my report. You were actively on the wiki and could've checked the noticeboard.
Unlike you, I have no obligations to the wiki. Yet, I still occasionally check the special pages. I check for broken file links. I check for duplicate template arguments. I check for broken templates. I check for uncategorized files and pages. Can you check the page which mentions your role?
To Aidan's response,
If that is the preferred route, then I can use it. To be honest, I was under the impression that using an admin's talk page for such was discouraged and that either the noticeboard or Discord should be used, but looking at SmashWiki:Vandalism again does mention that an admin's talk page is an acceptable means of reporting. My only qualm with it is that it is less centralized, but I can at least use the built-in search. --CanvasK (talk) 14:45, January 10, 2023 (EST)
"I don't expect anyone to be on here 24/7 because people have jobs, groceries, and sleep. The below IP went 3 days without being blocked; 72 hours where any of you could have checked the noticeboard or your watchlist or possibly your email."
I don't get email for watchlist edits and I'm not turning that on just to flood my email for any little vandal edit, while other users have been doing just fine notifying us on Discord. And evidently from my wiki activity, where I can go over a week at a time without making any edit or admin action, I'm not very active here as is, and I'm not going to be suddenly devoting more time here away from other things just because someone adamantly refuses to use Discord to report vandals for no good reason.
"Is that too much to ask?"
Is it too much to ask for you to just go on Discord and ping an admin instead of insisting on using this obsolete relic of a page? As I said before, by insisting on reporting here and expecting admins to constantly check it, at best you're still getting a delayed response that allows the vandal to run amok until an admin happens to refresh recent changes or check this page, whereas direct notification on Discord ensures admins will be directly notified immediately.
"There's a reason why I explicitly mentioned you. You were actively online blocking a vandal that appeared a mere hour after I made my report. You were actively on the wiki and could've checked the noticeboard."
Because surprise, someone pinged the admins about that vandal on Discord, and thus I was notified. If you done that with the vandal you reported instead of just posting here, the vandal would have been promptly taken care of too.
"Unlike you, I have no obligations to the wiki."
I'm not getting paid for this, I have just as much obligation to do anything on the wiki as you do. Omega Tyrant   15:54, January 10, 2023 (EST)
