Abandon Ship! (自爆ジャンプ, Self-destruct Jump), called Abandon Ship in the PAL version, is Bowser Jr.'s up special move.

Overview

When used, Bowser Jr. jumps out of the Junior Clown Car, which explodes when it hits the ground. When the Car is falling, it will do 5% damage, and upon exploding, will do 13% with moderately high knockback. Bowser Jr. gains a new Junior Clown Car upon hitting the ground or grabbing a ledge.

While in midair after performing this move, Bowser Jr. can either attack by swinging his hammer from behind to in front of him, or perform an air dodge. The hammer deals 15% damage and has KO potential around 115%. If Bowser Jr. is hit with a moderately strong attack, he can air dodge to regain the Junior Clown Car. However, if Bowser Jr. gets hit by weaker attacks, this cannot happen, thus allowing able players to easily gimp him.

Customization

Special Move customization was added in Super Smash Bros. 4. These are the variations:

1. Abandon Ship! 2. Meteor Ejection 3. Koopa Meteor
"Eject from the Junior Clown Car just before it explodes. You can attack while you fall." "Jump out of the Junior Clown Car, and send it crashing to the ground." "Launch high into the air before the Junior Clown Car explodes, firing you downward."
  1. Abandon Ship!: Default.
  2. Meteor Ejection: Vertical height is reduced in return for the move gaining Meteor Smash properties upon starting the move. Contact with the falling Car is 3% damage, and the explosion is 10% damage. The hammer can still be used after ejecting and is the exact same as the default move.
  3. Koopa Meteor: The Junior Clown Car flies straight up and explodes, sending Bowser Jr. crashing down, and does 17% to anyone hit on the way down with strong vertical knockback. Upon going down, pressing the standard attack button can cancel the move into a hammer swing, and allow Bowser Jr. to move horizontally quicker. A stage's ledge cannot be grabbed on the way up, only on the way down. Despite the name, it is not a meteor smash; it could be instead referring to how Bowser Jr. comes crashing down, like a meteor. This move is extremely easy to gimp with wind moves, such as Mario's Gust Cape/Dr. Mario's Breezy Sheet, as Bowser Jr. will barely fly upward, if at all, and simply go straight down.

Origin

This move is an original move invented for Super Smash Bros. 4. However, Bowser Jr.'s machines in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 explode upon defeat. It also shares its name in English with a minigame in Mario Party 2.

The jumping animation for the move is the same one from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, most evident in the third Bowser Jr. fight. The hammer Bowser Jr. swings while in the air is similar to the one used by Hammer Bro. enemies. Bowser threw such hammers in Super Mario Bros. and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, but Bowser Jr. was also shown wielding similar hammers in Super Mario Maker and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. In Ultimate, the Koopalings instead use their magic wands that debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3.
