Bayonetta (ベヨネッタ, Bayonetta) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She was confirmed as a playable character on June 12th, 2018. Bayonetta is classified as fighter #63.

Bayonetta is once again voiced by Hellena Taylor in the English version, using recycled voice clips from Super Smash Bros. 4.

How to unlock

Complete one of the following:

  • Play VS. matches, with Bayonetta being the 43rd character to be unlocked.
  • Clear Classic Mode with Mario, Pikachu, or any character in their unlock trees; being the second and ninth character, respectively, after Sonic.
  • Have Bayonetta join the player's party in World of Light.

With the exception of the third method, Bayonetta must then be defeated on the Umbra Clock Tower.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

Bayonetta has been significantly nerfed in the transition to Ultimate, most likely because she was considered the best character in Smash 4, to the point of being labeled by some players as "broken" and compared her to the infamous Brawl incarnation of Meta Knight despite the nerfs she received in SSB4 patches. Many of her best moves, such as Witch Time, Witch Twist, and Afterburner Kick, have been substantially nerfed to reduce her potency in combos and KO confirms. Unlike her Smash 4 iteration, she now has a defined main weakness with the lack of kill options at higher percentages.

Aesthetics

  •   As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Bayonetta's model features a more subdued color scheme.
  •   Love is Blue and Scarborough Fair have louder sound effects to distinguish the two.
  •   Bayonetta's taunts are sped up.
  •   When the victory screen shows her name, Bayonetta's glasses glint at the edge. While this was present in her victory poses in Smash 4, it only showed for a brief moment.

Attributes

  •   Like all characters, Bayonetta's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete (down from 4).
  •   Bayonetta dashes much faster (1.6 → 1.76).
  •   Bayonetta walks slighly faster (0.9 → 0.945).
  •   Bayonetta's air speed is faster (0.97 → 1.019).
  •   Bayonetta is slightly lighter (84 → 81). This worsens her survivability, but also makes her harder to combo at higher percents.
  •   Bayonetta's bullet arts can now be angled slightly upwards or downwards, depending on the move.

Ground attacks

  •   Jab combo connects more reliably.
    •   The first jab hit has less range.
    •   Jab combo deals less damage.
  •   Bayonetta's tilts all have less range.
    •   Up tilt's grounded hitbox launches opponents at an angle similar to the aerial hitbox, which improves its combo potential.
    •   Up and Down tilt have slightly more endlag (FAF 27 → 32 (up), FAF 27 → 29 (down)).
  •   Forward smash has less start-up (Frame 19 → 17) and can now be angled.

Aerial Attacks

  •   Held neutral aerial and up aerial have increased landing lag (Neutral: frame 10 → 18, Up: 12 → 16).
  •   Forward aerial has less landing lag (frame 14 → 12).
    •   All of forward aerial's hits have increased damage (3% (first)/2.2% (second)/6% (third) → 4%/3.3%/7%).
    •   Forward aerial no longer causes Bayonetta to bounce off of opponents. This means that the first hit of it can no longer combo into After Burner Kick or Witch Twist at low to medium percents.
    •   All hits of forward aerial have more ending lag (FAF 27 → 38 (hit 1), FAF 32 → 40 (hit 2), FAF 40 → 47)).
  •   Both back aerial and up aerial have less landing lag (Back: frame 12 → 10, Up: 12 → 8).
    •   Back aerial has smaller hitboxes (6.2u/4.8u → 4.6u/4.2u) and more ending lag (FAF 30 → 35).
    •   Up aerial deals less damage (9% → 7.5%) and its knockback growth has been reduced (90 → 80). This hinders its KO ability.
    •   Up aerial has a more horizontal angle (75° → 55°), reducing its combo potential.
  •   Down aerial's knockback appears to have been lowered.
    •   Down aerial has more landing lag (frame 28 → 30).

Throws/other attacks

  •   Bayonetta's hand now grabs characters using a form of Umbran magic, as seen via a slightly updated animation where she swings her hand around, which is sparkling with a noticeable Umbran purple.
  •   Down Throw has reduced knockback scaling, which, improves its follow up potential at high percents.

Special moves

  • Bullet Climax:
    •   Bullet Climax now needs to be fully charged before it can be shield-cancelled.
    •   Bullet Climax takes slightly longer to fully charge.[1]
    •   Bullet Climax can no longer be charged over longer periods of time.
  • Heel Slide / After Burner Kick:
    •   If Heel Slide collides with a shield, Bayonetta is unable to perform the second hit.
    •   Heel Slide's second hit has much higher knockback scaling now being unable to combo into Witch Twist starting at medium percents.
    •   If an After Burner Kick collides with a shield, Bayonetta is unable to use another one.
    •   Downwards After Burner Kick can no longer be autocancelled.
    •   Downwards After Burner Kick now has a late hit that sends at an 80° launch angle, which allows performing two in a row to be more reliable.[2]
  •   Downwards After Burner Kick has slightly decreased damage (6.5% → 6.1%).
  • Witch Twist:
    •   Witch Twist has increased startup (Frame 4 → 8) and ending lag (FAF 28 → 32).
    •   Witch Twist gains less vertical height.
    •   Witch Twist can no longer grab the ledge until the move ends or with proper spacing.
  • Witch Time:
    •   Witch Time no longer grants intangibility when used.
    •   Witch Time's effect duration has been significantly lowered, no longer being effective at any percent range even against uncharged smash attacks.
    •   Witch Time has increased startup and endlag (FAF 50 → 67).
    •   The screen turns dark whenever someone is affected by Witch Time.
    •   Witch Time scales with the power of the move it is used on, so using Witch Time on a weaker move such as a jab will result in the effect lasting a much shorter time, or a stronger move such as a smash attack resulting in a longer effect.
  •   The landing lag Bayonetta receives after a combo has been increased.
  • Final Smash:
    •   When Witch Time is activated, opponents move a little faster, making it easier to dodge her attacks.
      •   Due to its change, opponents that used side-step or air dodge during the Final Smash may gain slightly less intangiblity frames.
    •   When not mashing buttons during Infernal Climax, less damage is dealt to opponents.
    •   The climax gauge fills up much easier.
    •   When the Final Smash ends, opponents take damage.

Classic Mode: The Requiem of Fallen Wings

All of Bayonetta's opponents have wings, in reference to her battles against angels, with the exception of Giant Palutena who is a reference to the final boss battle of Bayonetta against Jubelius, the Creator.

Note: When fighting Charizard, its Pokémon Trainer is absent. Additionally, every stage plays a track from the Bayonetta universe, no matter what universe the stage originates from.

Role in World of Light

Bayonetta was among the fighters summoned to the cliffside to fight against the army of Master Hands.

During the opening cutscene, Bayonetta was present when Galeem unleashed his beams of light. Bayonetta dodged a beam of light, activating her Bat Within, but she was then vaporized immediately after she reformed her body, and later placed under Galeem's imprisonment alongside the rest of the fighters, excluding Kirby.

  • Bayonetta's official artwork strongly resembles her official artwork for Bayonetta 2, with her arms pointed outwards rather than inwards.
    • Likewise, Bayonetta's official artwork based on the first game resembles her official artwork for Bayonetta, only mirrored.
  • Bayonetta can be unlocked by clearing Classic Mode as Sonic or Mario. This could be a reference to Sega publishing the first Bayonetta game and Nintendo publishing the sequels.
