Sonic (ソニック, Sonic) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was confirmed as a playable character on June 12th, 2018. Sonic is once again voiced by Roger Craig Smith, albeit with recycled voice clips from various Sonic games, as was the case in Smash 4.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  •   As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Sonic's model features a more subdued color scheme. His fur is now lightly detailed, similar to other furred characters.
  •   Like most of the cast, Sonic is more expressive, as he now grins while dashing and now has an angry look when using up tilt, forward smash and holding his shield.
  •   Sonic now grins during his running victory pose instead of smirking, like in Brawl.

Attributes

  •   Like all characters, Sonic's jumpsquat animation now takes 3 frames to complete.

Ground Attacks

  •   Neutral attack's third hit has a slightly different animation.
  •   Down tilt launches at a more upward angle, improving its combo potential.
  •   Sonic's previous dash attack, which resembled the Spin Attack from his games, has been changed into a lunge kick.

Aerial Attacks

Throws/other attacks

  •   Forward throw now sends opponents at a more horizontal angle.
  •   Up throw and forward throw deal less knockback. This improves their combo and tech chase abilities but weakens their ko and edge guarding abilities.

Special Moves

  •   Homing Attack now shows a reticle on the opponent right before Sonic is about to strike. The reticle's design is taken from the modern Sonic games post-Sonic Colors.
  •   Homing Attack can be charged with Sonic ascending much higher than before. The attack deals more damage when charged and gets improved accuracy.
  •   Homing Attack comes out much quicker than the previous titles when the attack button is pressed.
  •   Spin Dash's charge can no longer be canceled by pressing shield. It also now stops upon hitting an opponent's shield, reducing its safety.
  •   Spring Jump has more ending lag, preventing it from chaining into aerial attacks as easily.
  •   Sonic's Spin Charge now changes the color of the trail to indicate charge strength, going from blue, to cyan, to yellow.
  •   Sonic's Final Smash has been changed. He still transforms into Super Sonic and launches foes on contact, and his speed has been drastically increased. However, he now moves automatically on the horizontal axis, so only his vertical position can be controlled.
