Talk:Boxing Ring
Universe[edit]
Since Sakurai has confirmed the Smash Bros. version wasn't just a "placeholder" prior to the Little Mac reveal, why wouldn't label this stage as both Punch-Out and Smash, universe-wise? OT, I don't think there's enough justification to not count it as a Smash stage when one of the two versions clearly is just that. Miles (talk) 12:31, 25 February 2014 (EST)
PAL Spanish names: Are they really necessary?[edit]
As soon as I saw Spanish PAL names being listed here I instantly feared this page will face the same fate as this one. Don't get me wrong, I mean... I was, in fact, one of the contributors who helped that page have the info it has currently, but it's just messy enough and I wouldn't like to see more pages filled with big bunches of info that will eventually be tagged as articles in need of a cleanup.
I would like to point out that, at least in the case of this page, only English name differences are relevant. PAL Spanish names are pretty much a mix of translations and adaptations of the English PAL character titles. The other page is dealing with a similar issue (most foreign names are pretty much that), but that's another topic.
I still have to see how the rest of the wiki editors and I will deal with the other page, so I hope we can all solve the issue with this page before it grows any bigger. -(Arikk (talk) 02:41, 27 December 2014 (EST))

- I made your list more cohesive. I don't know if these should be implemented into the page, but I wouldn't be against it (if done right). Laikue (talk | contribs) 22:20, 9 February 2015 (EST)
- I feel like we should only have Japanese (original language) and English (language of this wiki) names in the main article, with the others on a subpage in a table. Said subpage could include the main page ones as well for comparison's sake. Miles (talk) 22:28, 9 February 2015 (EST)
I would want these to be checked over for authenticity. There could be some mistakes here and there. Also, could we possibly put a link on the boxing ring stage for a separate article on aliases. Honestly, I had to look up a lot of those words, but I have taken enough German classes to know how the language works. Quajustu (talk) 22:53, 9 February 2015 (EST)
- By now, all german Titles and Translations have been added (most of the ones missing here by me). Titles for DLC Characters will need to be added in Future (Piranha Plant and Joker already have their own rows, but they are empty, because these characters haven't been released yet). ProLink (talk) 16:28, 20 December 2018 (EST)
The French Aliases[edit]
So, I'm the one who added the french aliases( I also added the German Mewtwo aliases). I took the initiative to add them, since there are the PAL German and Spanish. I am not sure of me, because there isn't any trace of the Italian or Russian one. I hope it would be useful.
If someone is able to tell if that fits in the page...

Trivia - Keep or Delete?[edit]
"Near the end of the Developer Direct released after E3 2013, all the revealed stages on Smash Wii U were shown off in little segments, with Boxing Ring being one of them. However, if one listens closely, no music appears to be playing when Boxing Ring appears. This was probably to conceal the fact that it was a Punch-Out!! stage."
Keep or delete? Permit or omit? Put out or throw out? I'd argue it's speculative, though with good reasoning behind it, speculative nonetheless of the reasons behind why the music didn't play. I'd say it's uninteresting, though that's more subjective than anything I'm sure by consensus it is likely it could be decided as such. I'd also say it's irrelevant, as showing off things in official videos with concealed details to not give things away isn't anything new. Or, in most cases, noteworthy. Smashedpotatoes (talk) 19:27, 8 October 2015 (EDT)
- Speculative and wordy. Delete Serpent∞King (talk) 19:35, 8 October 2015 (EDT)
- I'm thinking it could be pruned a bit and it'll be fine. The lack of music at that time may be noteworthy, but the speculative part can go in my opinion. Berrenta (talk) 19:37, 8 October 2015 (EDT)
- Gonna delete it then Smashedpotatoes (talk) 03:13, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- Hold on a sec. It makes no sense to delete it. I mean, if all it says is music wasn't playing, then people are gonna ask why, aren't they? Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura 07:01, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- That's no compromise, Serpent. I mean, there's a little less wordiness there. We're talking about the whole package. Smashedpotatoes (talk) 07:10, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- My biggest issue was the wordiness, which I removed. Also, by changing "probably" to "likely", I remove a minimal amount of speculation (I mean, yeah, it's still there, but it's less definite). Serpent∞King (talk) 07:12, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- I see. I kinda just thought the whole thing should be omitted. Something like that is hardly interesting. Kinda wanted a consensus on that.Smashedpotatoes (talk) 07:15, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- I mean, it's pretty much the same, just a few interchanged words. Haha. Smashedpotatoes (talk) 07:16, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- It's borderline for sure, but I would say it's worth having. Serpent∞King (talk) 07:17, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- Lez deal wid dat den. Berrenta's input is kinda on the fence, so 2-1 in favor of keeping the whole thing. Smashedpotatoes (talk) 07:20, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- I feel like the burden of proof should be on the people in favor of keeping. I mean I already gave my reasons why I think we shouldn't keep it. Let's hear why it's worth having while we wait for votes. Smashedpotatoes (talk) 07:24, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- I'd like to real quickly point out that picking and choosing what trivia is "interesting" is subjective in itself. Also, this is not really something that can be proven per say Serpent∞King (talk) 07:33, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- Obviously, that's true. Then again, alongside general trivia guidelines, there is some sort of undefined line for what is interesting and what is not. With that, I think it's fair to ask for a general consensus: is this interesting enough to be kept? In which case, I'd say no. Smashedpotatoes (talk) 07:36, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- Also there's an issue of noteworthiness. Details being hidden from game videos are nothing new. The magnitude of what is hidden should determine its noteworthiness. Smashedpotatoes (talk) 07:41, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- Let me break it down for you. At the time, the Boxing Ring just had its Smash design. People had speculated that it was a Punch-Out!! stage because of this. Sakurai didn't want the stage (and, potentially, Little Mac as a playable character) to be leaked, so he cut the music off for it. I'd say that's pretty important. Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura 08:48, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- Yes, all of that is true, but that doesn't mean it's especially important, or interesting. I'd rather drop this, partially since it's going nowhere and partially because I'm leaving and I started this anyways, and maybe let you keep it, but if anyone wants to continue this they can. Smashedpotatoes (talk) 09:01, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
- As it stands, it's 3-1 in favor of keeping (Berrenta's vote is kind of on the fence, but judging by the wording, it seems to me she's in favor of keeping). I think this is fine. Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura 09:19, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
I vote delete. It's subjective, speculative, and uninteresting. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by BOO! Or maybe Nutta. 09:50, 9 October 2015 (EDT)
Additional Ultimate languages[edit]
Ultimate supports four new languages we don't have titles for here: Russian, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. So let this stand as a to-do comment to add those columns to the table of character titles, and slog through the whole roster to transcribe the names. Thanks to how game languages work on the Switch, this won't be too difficult to achieve. I think we can also confirm the US vs. EU titles for English, Spanish, and French by changing the console region in addition to the selected language. SuperFalconBros (talk) 01:03, 4 November 2018 (EDT)
So, based on the demos currently happening, it seems like the regional versions (English, Spanish, French) may have been condensed into a single set of titles for each language. However, in the Spanish version at least, it's not consistently using one source; for example, Meta Knight uses his NA Spanish name, while Bowser Jr. uses his PAL Spanish name with an additional minor change. Given these changes, I think it will end up much too messy if we try to put the Smash 4 and Ultimate names in the same table. Lots of information will end up duplicated, or the layout will be too complicated. Instead, I think we should have one table on the page with some sort of toggle to switch between the Smash 4 and Ultimate names. Or, if that's not feasible, just bite the bullet and make two new articles: "List of Boxing Ring titles (SSB4)" and "List of Boxing Ring titles (SSBU)". SuperFalconBros (talk) 14:07, 8 November 2018 (EST)
See examples here. SuperFalconBros (talk) 15:02, 8 November 2018 (EST)
- I like the idea of game-split subpages regardless of however we eventually decide to do it, to keep the messy side data off the primary page. Toomai Glittershine The Spark 06:36, 9 November 2018 (EST)
- I've started drafts here and here. I think I'll mainspace these shortly and replace the section in the main article with a quick blurb about the titles and differences between regions. SuperFalconBros (talk) 14:15, 10 November 2018 (EST)
Split[edit]
Based on demo footage, it appears that Ultimate does not have different Boxing Ring titles for regional language versions (e.g. USA vs. GB, Mexico vs. Spain). It also seems that rather than drawing from just one of the previous regional versions, the titles used in Ultimate are a mix of both versions. For example, from recent demo footage from an event held in Spain, Bowser Jr. has his title from the Spain-Spanish version of Smash 4 (with an additional grammar change), while Meta Knight has his title from the Mexico-Spanish version.
There's no good way to put all this Ultimate information in the same table as the Smash 4 titles, without the layout being extremely complicated and having many of the titles duplicated. Not to mention, Ultimate will need several new columns for new languages that Smash 4 didn't support.
And so, I propose we create two separate articles: List of Boxing Ring titles (SSB4) and List of Boxing Ring titles (SSBU). Drafts are already underway. SuperFalconBros (talk) 15:04, 10 November 2018 (EST)
Thanks to the NintendoNederland stream, I can confirm that there is a separate PAL English language (Duck Hunt is called Duck Hunt Duo), but like the version seen in Spain, the Boxing Ring titles have been standardized between the regional versions. Most of the ones used in the PAL version seem to be the old NA titles, but there are a few (like Mega Man's) still using the old PAL titles. So I think we should definitely move ahead with the list articles. SuperFalconBros (talk) 10:31, 11 November 2018 (EST)
- Support splitting the titles into a separate article, because they just take up too much space on this page. Awesomelink234, the Super Cool Sonic Fan Leave a message if needed 10:34, 11 November 2018 (EST)
- Strong support the table for the fighter's titles makes the page extremely large and it is over 50,000 bytes. So I think we should split it since the size can make mobile users and users who use older computers lag significantly. Corrin Fan 12:58, 12 November 2018 (EST)
- Somewhat opposed to this on the grounds that it makes comparing the SSB4/SSBU titles more difficult by separating them. Miles (talk) 13:08, 12 November 2018 (EST)
- Link's title is realistically the only one that's going to actually change. Most other titles will likely not change, they'll just be one of either the previous NA or PAL versions, or not differ at all in languages without the NA/PAL split. Given that, are you opposed to separating the Smash 4 and Ultimate titles into two tables, or just to separating them into their own articles? I'd say keeping them all in the same table is totally out of the question. SuperFalconBros (talk) 14:07, 12 November 2018 (EST)
- If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's actually been seen that Kirby's title has now been changed; he's now "The Pink Demon", which doesn't match either of his previous titles. Sniffnoy (talk) 14:19, 12 November 2018 (EST)
- You're right; I had forgotten. Still, based on what we've seen, the overwhelming majority of titles will likely be the same. SuperFalconBros (talk) 16:57, 12 November 2018 (EST)

- I'll agree with everyone on this and after all, having an article is a great idea. I'll support this one and it's a... KO! Dragonfirebreath25 (talk) 17:14, 12 November 2018 (EST)
- Oppose Have 2 different tables, problem solved. Serpent King 14:33, 28 November 2018 (EST)
- I created two separate tables since there was general support for the split, with the one other oppose vote citing comparisons between versions (but there are only three differences, in English anyway). I would still rather have an article dedicated to each than use those janky expand/collapses, though. SuperFalconBros (talk) 15:09, 28 November 2018 (EST)
- Support split. The file size for the page is unnecessarily enormous, and given the way collapsible tables work on wikis in mobile, will likely crash for people using mobile. If you want to compare the character titles between 4 and Ultimate, you'd be best off just opening a new tab and switching back and forth. Personally, I think it's a major pain to have to scroll all the way up and down two gigantic tables to compare some information on each.
- Alternatively, we could just have one gigantic table combining the information for both 4 and Ultimate, which would cut down on redundancy, but I'm not sure what everyone would think about that. John HUAH! 19:11, 2 December 2018 (EST)
- Support I had this idea in mind for a while. The stage itself has its own section, and fluff goes on a special page. This page can stay "Boxing Ring" and the page with the fighter titles becomes something like "Boxing Ring Titles"American Ronin 09:31, 23 December 2018 (EST)
- It's totally infeasible to have it one table. Between the lack of regional versions in Ultimate, the languages in each game that don't exist in the other, and the 90% overlap in names between most versions, it would be a gigantic mess for no benefit besides being able to compare the names of about 5 veterans that actually changed. SuperFalconBros (talk) 20:30, 2 December 2018 (EST)
- Oppose The Character titles are a notable mechanic of the stage, and as such should be on it's page, not on a another page, to reduce confusion of readers. Gaberboo (talk) 19:13, 12 February 2019 (EST)
OSHA[edit]
The trivia says this stage is notable for visibly not breaking OSHA guidelines but wouldn’t the falling lights break the guidelines? MateNan (talk) 10:33, April 30, 2019 (EDT)
- Didn't even realize that someone put that there. While I will not deny the hilariousness of BDG, it's not a noteworthy trivia point (nor is it a noteworthy thing about Boxing Ring). In response to your actual question, to my knowledge, no. Aidan, the Rurouni 11:36, April 30, 2019 (EDT)
Error in universes[edit]
I noticed it lists Punch Out before Wii Fit Trainer in the Titles lists, despite the two debuting in reverse order of that.
Korean SSB4 character titles[edit]
Can we add the Korean SSB4 character titles in the page? (Note: The 3DS version only got localized into Korean) 5.82.120.11 05:44, July 28, 2024 (EDT)
