The Special Movie is a nearly-fifteen minute long bonus video included in the NTSC versions of Super Smash Bros. Melee, found in the Archives sub-menu of the Data menu. The clip itself features the starter characters and their abilities, as well as various single-player modes, items, stages, and trophies.

Various elements different from the final game can be seen in this clip, such as Peach having different voice clips, and Temple having unused platforms.

The movie is not available in the PAL versions of Melee, speculated to be due to the inability to fit all translated languages of the movie onto the disc.

Trivia

  • Some characters are seen having the same alternate costume as another, something that is usually impossible without hacking.
  • Bowser, Samus, Ice Climbers, and Ness are the only four characters that do not have a song of their own. Bowser appears right after Captain Falcon and so he uses "Mute City" (which is Captain Falcon's song), Samus appears right after Fox so she uses "Corneria" (which is Fox's song), Ice Climbers appear right after Pikachu so they use "Poke Floats" (which is Pikachu's song,) and Ness appears right after Kirby and so he uses "Green Greens".
  • Although Mario and Peach, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Link and Zelda, Captain Falcon, Fox, Pikachu, and Kirby use songs from their own franchises, Mario and Peach are the only two ones that do not use one of their credits themes. Instead of Mario having "Super Mario Bros. 3" and Peach having "Rainbow Cruise", they both use the song "Princess Peach's Castle" (which is Bowser's credits theme). "Rainbow Cruise" actually plays on Section 16 (which is "Items"). The remaining eight use a song which is one of their credits themes (like Donkey Kong with "Kongo Jungle", Yoshi with "Yoshi's Island", Link and Zelda with "Great Bay", Fox with "Corneria", Pikachu with "Poke Floats", and Kirby with "Green Greens").
  • Bowser is the only character that does not appear with his franchise, so appears after Captain Falcon. However, he is from the Super Mario franchise; but oddly uses the song "Mute City" which is Captain Falcon's.
