SmashWiki:Glossary

The Super Smash Bros. Wiki has been written in a style that assumes the following basic knowledge:

General terms

These terms apply to fighting games in general;

  • Attack: An action done to harm foes.
  • Clone: A character that shares attributes and techniques with another character.
  • Buff: Improving the attributes of a character.
  • Camping: The act of staying in one place and prolonging the battle.
  • Combo: A series of attacks strung together in succession.
  • Free For All: A mode without teams or alliances, so all participants must fend for themselves.
  • Grabbing: Clutching the foe so they cannot move for a brief period of time. Usually, an attack follows.
  • Glitch: A flaw in the game's programming which results in an unintended outcome.
  • Hitbox: The area of effect for an attack. Generally in proportion of the action; a kick attack should have a hitbox of the foot and leg.
  • Jab: A quick, short ranged and low damaging punch.
  • Knockout/KO : When a character is knocked out of the stage, or, in Stamina Mode, runs out of hit points.
  • Lag: A delay in an action. Not to be confused with Wi-Fi lag, which is a delay in the game's performance due to the internet.
  • Nerf: The weakening of a character.
  • Stage: The setting for a battle.
  • Stock: The amount of lives a character has. Also refers to the match type; a Stock Match ends when a player runs out of lives. Not always timed, but when they are, the person with the highest stock at the end wins.
  • Sudden Death: A rematch done when there is a tie.
  • Tier: The ranking of how good a character performs in tournaments.
  • Tournament: A gathering of players to compete and win matches of a game.

Smash-specific

These terms pertain to the unique elements in the Smash series;

  • Direction of attacks: All characters can direct their attacks;
    • Up: All characters can do an upwards directed attack on the ground or in the air.
    • Down: Likewise with up, all characters can do an upwards directed attack on the ground or in the air.
    • Sideways: On the ground, attacks directed to the left or right are referred to as "side" attacks.
    • Forward: Offensive moves initiated while moving forward in the air.
    • Back: Offensive moves initiated while the control stick is pointed the opposite direction of where the character is facing.
    • Neutral: No input given other than the attack button.
  • Helpless: A state of inability to do attacks or special moves in the air.
  • Knockback: The magnitude of how far an attack propels a foe.
  • Ledge: The end part of a platform that characters an hang on to. Typically, characters hang on to a ledge when recovering from a fall. Attacks can be done off a ledge.
    • Edge-guarding: Actions done to prevent the enemy from grabbing on to the ledge.
  • Meteor Smash/Spike: A downwards attack intended to knock the target below the stage.
  • Recovery: An effort to return to the stage once knocked off it.
  • Smash Attack: A powerful offensive move that can be charged for additional damage. Can be in four directions; Up, Down, and the left or right, the latter two referred to as "Side".
  • Special Moves: All characters have unique moves that usually have other functions aside from damaging a foe.
  • Tilt: Usually referring to the act of moving a control stick in a direction without the force to merit a dash, resulting in walking. Up, down, or side attacks can be done while walking, addressed as Tilt attacks.

Tournament-specific

These terms are used in the context of Smash tournaments;

  • Matchup: The measure of how a character is expected to perform versus another. For example, Mario in Super Smash Bros Brawl has a +1 matchup to Link, meaning Mario is expected to fair better. Mario has a -1 matchup when facing Yoshi, and thus Mario is considered to be at a disadvantage.
