Skill | In Brawl I am, for the most part, unsure. Somewhat Competent? In Melee, I am pretty competent, but nowhere near professional. |
Hello Reader! Thanks for taking the time to read my page. You must be very bored, or looking for a way to not do homework. Well anyway here's my story.
My Story
I'm a simple, casual smasher from the west coast (the best coast :p). The first game I ever played was Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. Though primitive by today's gaming standards, I considered the game to perfect back then. I fell in love with everything about the game: the drive, the adrenaline rush, the frustration and of course, the series's trademark face-paced gaming speed. I started playing smash when I was about 10 years old. My cousins in the east coast would always invite my family every year to come and visit. Most of our days were spent playing their GameCube in the basement. My favorite game they had was always Melee. I spent hours trying out all the characters, looking for the perfect counter to my cousin's Roy. Looking back now, I realize it was my lack of skill, not the characters, that held me back. Unfortunately I never got to hone my skills at the age as I didn't have a GameCube back then. I made up for that by buying a Wii when it came out in 2006. Like most others, I was ecstatic when Brawl was released. I was one of the 1st to get it and instantly fell in love with the game. I never started playing competitively until just a few years ago. Being the Asian Nerd I am, I attended the UC COSMOS program in 2009. There I met many dedicated smashers and a person very precious to me. I received my 1st large dose of competitive smashing here. Though I didn't emerge top smasher like I hoped I would, I learned a great deal about the meta game, and my experiences there fueled me to continue playing pro. In 2010, I rediscovered Melee and found it so much more thrilling than Brawl. I quickly learned and mastered wavedashing and SHFFLing and discovered how much better my 2 favorites Marth and Falco were in Melee. I spent weeks learning the advanced game mechanics and now I definitely prefer Melee over Brawl (don't hate). I would like to test my skills in a tournament if I get the time. Today, I am a senior in High School frantically doing his best to get into a good engineering school (high hopes for MIT). With all the college applications and pressure to keep grades up, I haven't had time to smash recently. Still smash has and will always be one of my favorite games to play. Other games I enjoy are the Pokemon series and of course Sonic games. I have played all 5 Pokemon generations and play competitively there are well. I just recently bought Sonic Generations and I am having a blast reliving my childhood. Thanks for reading and I think you should get going on that blank homework sitting on your desk right now.
Smashing Ability
I consider myself reasonably skilled, given my limited time to smash. In Melee, I am well versed in advanced gameplay, being able to integrate wavedashing and chain throwing into my play consistently. I main Marth, Fox, and Falco. For all those characters, my playing style is very aggressive and grab oriented: I prefer to start my combos with a low knockback throw, follow by SHFFLing or tech chasing, and end my combos with a spike or smash attack. As you would expect, my Marth playstyle makes heavy use of the Ken combo and chain grabbing. I am somewhat of a projectile whore, making heavy use of Short Hop (Double) Lasers, but I do not make heavy use of camping. I like to weave towards my opponents with my lasers to get the 1 grab I need to overwhelm my opponent. Occasionally, I can pull off a waveshine infinite. In terms of 1P mode achievements , I am reasonably accomplished. I have defeated Classic mode, Adventure mode, and All Star Mode, with every character on very hard. I have also defeated Event 50 and Event 51 with every character as well. I have also defeated those same events with Marth, Fox, Falco, Jigglypuff, Peach, and Roy without losing a stock.
In Brawl, I have a considerable degree of skill, though it is nowhere near the same level of competence as my Melee ability. I usually dominate casual matches with my friends, and usually emerge top smasher in school tournaments. In Brawl, I main Falco, and Marth, and use Diddy Kong and Meta Knight as alternates. My playstyles for these characters are derived from my Melee playstyle. I like to play very aggressively and chain grab until there's no tomorrow. However, this means I have not adapted to the Brawl metagame which is defensively oriented and forces over reliance on camping and planking. Because of the recent time I have invested in Melee, my fingers have developed muscle memory of wavedashing. This causes me to roll and glide toss alot when I don't need too and leaves me open for a great deal of lag punishment. I also have not lost my habit of unnecessary Dash Dancing, so I am very much prone to pratfalling. I do not fare well in online matches. In stark contrast to Xbox Live or PSN, the Nintendo WFC is slow and laggy. I rely on buffering my moves, but because of the slower frame speed in the online environment, a fair amount of my controller commands are ignored or delayed. I find myself SD'ing alot, jumping too high, or performing moves too late. Despite my flaws, I am, at the very least, skilled enough to remove a stock or 2 from Omega Tyrant, who was my 1st online opponent, and by far the most skilled player I have ever played.
Personality
I consider my self to be very mild mannered and soft spoken person. I am a very logical and methodical person as well. I am an avid bibliophile and when I am not smashing, I read many books, society deems a work of art. My favorite books are The Catcher in the Rye, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Othello, and Goethe's Faust. Though I attend a very religious school, I am an atheist. I find the concept of a God logically questionable, and see no pragmatic reason to put blind faith into an all powerful imaginary friend. Recently after reading C.S. Lewis though, I have acknowledged that religion has some logical credibility and should not be eschewed immediately. Despite of all of that however, I have a high degree of respect for religious people. They have a tremendous amount of willpower and their high moral standards are simply inspiring.
I was born into an Asian family living in Silicon Valley. As such, I was raised with high standards and pushed to be the best I could possibly be. I started learning math when I was born; I had to master addition, subtraction and my times tables before I started the Alphabet. the first 6 letters I learned were "A B C P H D." As you would guess, I was pushed to excel in all of my classes and do the most outrageous extracurricular activities. Asian parents don't seem to understand the majority of the Asian-American youth are not super athletic African-Americans, and my parents were no different. I did not excel at any sports and pretty much hated all of them when I was younger. At the same time though, I was usually the top student in my elementary classes, and was a pretty good piano player back then. Today in high school, I retain pretty much every Asian student trait I was raised to have. I still excel in all my classes and take every AP class I can, however I now enjoy exercising regularly, and have developed a passion for engineering topics. I like to work with circuitry and have a good amount of programming knowledge too.
Here's a college essay I wrote for MIT and CalTech. I figure as wiki editors we all share a love for internet humor. Enjoy everyone:
"Before, I had never really been one for jokes. I liked everything serious and to the point. Everything changed the day I decided to embrace my nerdy qualities and have some fun with them. Nowadays, my stash of cheesy humor is riddled with nerdy puns and internet memes. Physics and chemistry puns are my particular favorites. They generate quite a few spontaneous reactions, but there comes a point where they lose their momentum and die. Then you have to Barium. I love making references to internet pop culture. When the video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released, I jokingly made note of how I used to be a 1-dimensional and "forever alone" nerd, but then I took an arrow to the knee. This Halloween I wore a troll face for a costume and stole candy from other kids (I would give it back shortly afterward of course). Needless to say I felt like a boss. There is no greater joy in the world than seeing people laugh and smile. After all, a smile is a curve that sets everything straight."
How many bad, punny science jokes did you find? :P How many internet memes can you spot? If you have anything nice to say about the essay please post it on my talk page. If not, stay silent.
