In the SSB series, each character can change his/her outfit's color to avoid confusion if he/she is facing the same character they're using.

SSB

  • Mario:
    • Mario's Yellow costume is based on Wario's old clothes
    • Mario's Blue costume is based on his "Jumpman" appearence
  • Yoshi:
    • All of Yoshi's costumes appear as different variations of the Yoshi species in many of his games.
  • Captain Falcon:
    • Captain Falcon's Red costume is nearly identical to his rival Blood Falcon's outfit.
    • Captain Falcon's White costume is the same color as Jody Summer's outfit.
  • Kirby:
    • Kirby's Yellow costume is the same as when he is Beam Kirby, sans the hat. Also, the first Kirby used in multiplayer was a yellow Kirby (Kirby's Dream Course). Plus, Shigeru Miyamoto originally wanted Kirby to be yellow. Keeby.
    • Kirby's Red costume is the same as when he is Fire Kirby, sans the hat.
    • Kirby's Blue costume is the same as when he is Ice Kirby, sans the hat.
  • Samus:
    • Samus' Pink costume is her Varia Suit. Also, the blue visor indicates that she is using missiles at the time.
    • Samus' Blue costume is her Gravity suit.
  • Link:

SSBM

  • Mario:
    • Mario's Yellow costume is the same color as Wario's old clothes
    • Mario's Blue costume is the same color clothes he used to war in his first few games
  • Peach:
    • Peach's Yellow costume changes nearly her entire appearance to that of Daisy, including her hair color, hair style, earrings, dress style, gloves, crown and even skin color.
    • Peach's White costume imitates her Nurse Toadstool costume
  • Yoshi:
    • All of Yoshi's costumes appear as different variations of the Yoshi species in many of his games.
  • Captain Falcon:
    • Captain Falcon's Red costume is nearly identical to his rival Blood Falcon's outfit.
    • Captain Falcon's White costume is the same color as Jody Summer's outfit.
  • Ice Climbers:
    • The Ice Climbers' Orange and Red costumes will place Nana in the lead, making Popo follow.
  • Kirby:
    • Kirby's Yellow costume is the same as when he is Beam Kirby, sans the hat. Also, the first Kirby used in multiplayer was a yellow Kirby (Kirby's Dream Course). Plus, Shigeru Miyamoto originally wanted Kirby to be yellow.
    • Kirby's Red costume is the same as when he is Fire Kirby, sans the hat.
    • Kirby's Blue costume is the same as when he is Ice Kirby, sans the hat.
    • Kirby's White costume refers to his days on the original Game Boy. Due to the lack of color, his image on the original box art was actually white, but he was later changed to pink.
  • Samus:

  • Zelda:
    • Zelda's Red costume is the same color as she was in her first two games, with more detail.
    • Zelda's Blue costume is the same color as she was in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Link:
    • Link's Red costume is his Goron Tunic. It is also the same as when he used the Red Ring in The Legend of Zelda, when he used the shield spell in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and his Red Mail in A Link to the Past.
    • Link's Blue costume is his Zora Tunic.
    • Link's Black costume refers to his enemy, Shadow Link.
    • Link's White costume is the same as when he used the blue ring in The Legend of Zelda, and his Blue Mail in A Link to the Past.
  • Pikachu:
    • Pikachu's Red "costume" makes him wear Ash's red hat, the star of the Pokémon anime.
  • Mewtwo:
  • Marth:
    • Marth's White costume refers to Leaf from Fire Emblem Thracia 776.

SSBB

  • One of Mario's costumes changes his hat and shirt to white, while changing his overalls to red, causing him to look like Fire Mario.
  • Link's black costume has been altered from a black tunic into Dark Link.
  • One of Meta Knight's costumes will be Dark Meta Knight.
  • One of Peach's costumes makes her look like Daisy.
  • Donkey Kong has an alternate costume that is entirely white, resembling a yeti (or perhaps the character Eddie the Mean Old Yeti from the Donkey Kong Country TV series).
  • Fox appears to have an alternate costume that looks like his grey-furred rival, Wolf O'Donnell.
  • Bowser has an alternate costume in which he has a shining gold shell and bracelets.
