Charge Shot

The Charge Shot is Samus Aran's Neutral B move.

Press the B-button to charge up power, then press the B button again to fire. Press L, R, or Z to stop charging. When the attack is fully charged, Samus' blaster will start sparkling, and one can fire a fully charged shot at any time. When used in the air, it automatically fires, either a low charged blast, or however big a shot was charged previously.

If she didn't start out with it, the Charge Shot was one of the first Power-ups Samus would get. A fully charged shot would become Samus' only way of damaging certain bosses should she run out of Missiles. In Metroid Prime a charge shot is used to clear debris blocking Samus' path.
