The Smash World Tour 2020 was a planned Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament circuit organized by the teams behind VGBootCamp and Super Smash Con. The circuit started on March 13th, 2020. Tournaments were to be held all over the world, with the finals being held in the United States and a combined pot total of over $250,000. The scheduled cut-off date was November 22nd, 2020 and the finals were going to be held on December 17th-20th, 2020.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most tournaments in the circuit, including all gold and platinum events, were put on hold, putting the circuit into an indefinite hiatus. As of February 2021, no official word on the circuit's status has been made.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 disease at time of the start of the tour caused a global pandemic where large gatherings and travel were discouraged. As a result, Smash World Tour released a statement[1] on March 12th, 2020 detailing their measures to prevent the spread of the virus:

  • There would be no Platinum or Gold tier events in March and April 2020.
  • Silver events would continue as normal. However, sick people were recommended to stay home.
  • Missed point opportunities were planned to be made up later.

On April 1st, 2020, Smash World Tour released an update statement[2]:

  • The delay on all Smash World Tour events was extended to June 1st, 2020. Smash World Tour said this would likely not be the last delay.
  • A TO relief fund shop was opened on Smash.gg.

Almost all tournaments in the circuit during the pandemic period, including gold and platinum tiered events, were either postponed or cancelled:

  • Platinum tier tournaments Pound 2020, Umebura Japan Major 2020, Get On My Level 2020, Low Tier City Expo 2020, and Super Smash Con 2020 were cancelled, while HFLAN Melee Edition 2020, Battle Arena Melbourne 12, and Double Down were postponed.
  • Gold tier tournaments MomoCon 2020, Battle of BC 4, COLOSSEL 2020, and CEO 2020 were cancelled, while Glitch: Infinite, Port Priority 6, The Script Trilogy, and Apex 2020 were postponed. CEO Dreamland 2020 was still held, but the Gold tier status was dropped.

Scoring

Scores are calculated based off of placements, with higher tiered events offering more points for a wider range of placements. The following factors into the final score:

  • Top 3 Platinum results
  • Top 3 Gold results
  • Top 6 Silver results

The top 31 players then move on to the finals, with a Last Chance qualifier for the last slot.
