The Miiverse universe refers to the Super Smash Bros. series' collection of properties originating from the Miiverse social network.

Franchise description

Miiverse originated as an application for the Wii U in 2012 alongside the console's launch. Users used the application to make for-fun posts, report posts and comments, and follow and befriend other users. It was later made available on the Nintendo 3DS and web browsers in 2013, with largely similar features. Although Miiverse was discontinued in late 2017, its functionality has been replicated in a handful of Nintendo Switch sequels to Wii U games, namely Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Maker 2.

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

The Miiverse universe is represented by a single stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Stage

  • Miiverse
Miiverse: A stage similar in layout to Battlefield, with a single large platform and three small, soft platforms. However, posts from Miiverse will appear in the background based on the fighters in the match.

Elements from or in the Super Smash Bros. series

The Miiverse stage's green and white color scheme resembles the interface and color scheme of the social network. In addition, the concept of player-made drawings appearing on the stage is based on - and made possible by - the ability to post drawings or handwritten text on Miiverse using the GamePad or 3DS bottom screen.

Miiverse also featured several communities for Smash 4, including those for photo contests, in which users could submit images of the Photo Studio which match a certain theme. It also used to have a community representing the entire Super Smash Bros. series.

One post from Miiverse's Super Metroid Community, "y cant metroid[sic] crawl?" by PaulyU, became a meme within the Metroid fandom, and has even been acknowledged by Nintendo through Super Smash Bros. The NTSC description for the Samus (Varia Suit) trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS highlights the fact that Samus Aran does not need to crawl. To promote SSB4, Nintendo of Europe tweeted fighter information about Zero Suit Samus while noting that she crawled in Metroid: Zero Mission.

Trivia

  • Miiverse is the newest major universe (represented by a character, stage, item, or Assist Trophy) to be represented in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (as well as Super Smash Bros. 4 in general), with an initial date of November 2012.
  • Miiverse is the only universe with a series symbol in the series to receive no representation at all in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This is most likely because of the discontinuation of the Miiverse service in November 2017, and the fact that it was never available on the Nintendo Switch.
