Inkling is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Dream. She was confirmed on January 7th by DatNuttyKid, a day after Callie & Marie were confirmed as an assist trophy.
Like Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Robin, and Corrin, Inkling can be male or female depending on the costume. For consistency, this article will refer to them as female throughout.
Attributes
Inkling is a slow and middle-weight character. However, she is unique in her ability to turn into a squid through usage of her neutral special, making her much faster and lighter. She also can spread ink with most of her attacks, which lasts for fifteen seconds and causes opponents to move slower and take constant damage as long as they stand in it. By attacking the ink, opponents can get rid of it sooner. Ink is required to make full usage of Inkling's squid form, as the squid moves even slower than the Inkling form when not inside of it, and it also allows her to stay stealthy as she cannot be seen when she is in the ink and her tag will disappear. However, when moving at full speed in squid form, a small splash will be visible showing her location. She also cannot be in her squid form on soft or supersoft platforms, and will fall through them if she tries to.
Moveset
Standard Attacks
- Neutral - Splattershot: Inkling uses her Splattershot to fire ink. If the button is held, she will continuously shoot, even while walking.
- F-Tilt: Inkling swings her Splattershot.
- U-Tilt: Inkling does a flip, kicking above herself.
- D-Tilt: Inkling does a split.
- Dash: Inkling leaps and performs a sex kick. However, this has high ending lag.
- F-Smash - Blaster: Inkling pulls out a Blaster and shoots an ink blob out of it.
- U-Smash: Inkling tosses her Splattershot, then catches it.
- D-Smash - Inkbrush: Inkling pulls out an Inkbrush and swings it. Like Link and Toon Link, pressing the button again results in a second hit.
- N-Air: Inkling performs a sex kick.
- F-Air: Inkling flies forward, shoulder-first.
- B-Air: Inkling does a midair flip, kicking behind herself.
- U-Air: Inkling swipes above herself with her Splattershot.
- D-Air: Inkling shoots beneath herself with the Splattershot.
- Grab: Inkling reaches out and grabs the opponent.
- Pummel: Inkling hits the opponent with her Splattershot.
- F-Throw: Inkling tosses the opponent, then fires at them with the Splattershot.
- B-Throw: Inkling tosses the opponent, then fires at them with the Splattershot.
- U-Throw: Inkling tosses the opponent up.
- D-Throw: Inkling turns into a squid, dropping the opponent to the ground, before immediately turning back.
- Floor-F: Inkling swings her Splattershot as she stands up.
- Floor-B: Inkling swings her Splattershot as she stands up.
- Floor-T: Inkling swings her Splattershot as she stands up.
- Edge: Inkling jumps up and fires her Splattershot.
- Neutral Special - Squid / Splattershot: Inkling turns into her Squid form. Using it again while in Squid form turns her back and fires from the Splattershot. Notably, this move has no custom variations.
- Side Special - Splat Bomb: Inkling tosses a Splat Bomb, which explodes a few seconds later.
- Custom 1 - Burst Bomb: Inkling tosses a Burst Bomb, which explodes immediately upon impact and has a bigger ink range and damage output.
- Custom 2 - Suction Bomb: Inkling tosses a Suction Bomb, which sticks to the ground or any opponents, allowing it to be passed around, and takes longer before it explodes, but does less damage and has less ink range.
- Up Special - Squid Jump: Inkling turns into her squid form and charges up a jump similar to the "arcade" game. The more it is charged, the higher Inkling goes and the more damage it deals.
- Custom 1 - Super Jump: Inkling jumps without charging, going higher but doing no damage.
- Custom 2 - Squid Beakon: Inkling plants a Squid Beakon the first time the move is used, and Super Jumps the second time if the Beakon is still in existence, automatically going straight to the Beakon. This is a more reliable recovery, as the Super Jump will always go to a Beakon, but if the Beakon is destroyed and not replaced, Inkling cannot use the move to recover at all.
- Down Special - Ink Mine: Inkling plants an Ink Mine, which functions like a Motion-Sensor Bomb.
- Final Smash - Kraken: Inkling transforms into a Kraken. While a Kraken, the Inkling leaves ink behind wherever she goes, and pressing any attack or jump buttons causes her to leap out of the ink and use a spin attack, which does high damage. However, like her squid form, Inkling cannot be on soft or supersoft platforms as a Kraken.
Taunts
- Up Taunt: Inkling tosses her Splattershot and catches it.
- Side Taunt:
- Female version: Inkling mimics Callie and Marie's "Stay fresh!"
- Male version: Inkling gives a thumbs up.
- Down Taunt: Inkling sits down and yawns.
On-Screen Appearance

Idle Poses

- Inkling looks like she's talking.
Victory Fanfare
The victory theme from Splatoon. Like Cloud's victory fanfare, it continues endlessly, replacing the typical Super Smash Bros. battle over theme.
Reveal trailer
The trailer opens up to Callie & Marie doing Inkopolis News. Their dialogue is similar to when a Splatfest is announced, and even references this:
- "Before we reveal today's stages, some special news!" "What is it?! What is it?!"
- "We've received word from... on high." "You don't mean...?!"
- "Nope, not a Splatfest this time!" "OOH! What's the- ...wait, what?"
- "It's Super Smash Bros.!" "Wow!"
At this point in the conversation, Inkling's splash screen appears on the screen behind them, followed by several shots of Inkling battling opponents with them narrating:
- "Wow, an Inkling battling against the greatest Nintendo heroes!" "Makes me want to cry!"
- "That was amazing!" "She just took out Mario!"
- "Is that guy wielding an Inkbrush?" "Hmm..."
- "There's eight of them!" "Look at all that ink!"
- "Marie! It's us!" "Right, we're Assist Trophies!"
- "It's a Splatfest!" "They're battling in Inkopolis Plaza!"
- "Wow, this is so amazing!" "I know, right?"
Trophies
- Inkling
- Inklings are evolved squids from a time when the earth was flooded and all non-aquatic creatures were wiped out. While a lot of their culture is taken from humans, they have some unique events as well - like Turf Wars! They spread their ink on the ground, and claim it as their own! Whoever has the most ink on the ground at the end of a few minutes is declared the winner! They spread their ink in Super Smash Bros., too, but for a different reason. If you get caught in it, you'll slow down and take damage!

- Inkling (Alt.)
- Inklings have a number of weapons that they use in Turf Wars - and in Smash! When he throws his Splat Bomb, watch out! Not only does it do damage, but it also spreads more ink for you to avoid! He's also armed with an Ink Mine, which isn't visible when planted, but when someone steps on it... BOOOOOM!! It goes off, sending them flying and leaving a nice puddle of ink behind.
