Jigglypuff (プリン, Purin) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It was confirmed on June 12th, 2018. As with previous games, Rachael Lillis's portrayal of Jigglypuff from 64 has been repurposed for the English version of Ultimate; Mika Kanai, Jigglypuff's voice actress from previous games and the Pokémon anime, reprises her role in the Japanese version with new voice clips.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Aesthetics
- As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Jigglypuff's model features a more subdued color scheme. It more closely resembles its appearance in recent mainline Pokémon titles as a result. Only its irises have retained some of their vibrancy, and they are more detailed than they were previously.
- Jigglypuff is slightly more expressive, for example, now smiling when using certain neutral attacks as it did in games prior to SSB4 rather than looking surprised.
- Jigglypuff's ears now fold slightly inward when using Rollout or Rest.
- Side taunt is now much faster.
- Jigglypuff has two new victory poses. In one, it jumps twice, spins around, and assumes a pose similar to its render from SSB4. In the other, it runs into the scene, does a backflip, and assumes a pose similar to its official art from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
- Jigglypuff has an altered airdodge animation, where it poses more gracefully during the ending lag.
Attributes
- Like all characters, Jigglypuff's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.
- The changes to airdodges weaken Jigglypuff's defensive capabilities.
Ground Attacks
- Jigglypuff has a new dash attack animation, with its face angled more towards the screen and its limbs more elegantly spread out.
- The move itself travels further and appears to have decreased ending lag.
- Dash attack does more damage.
- However, it does less damage when late.
- Jigglypuff's forward smash extends slightly farther and has less ending lag.
- Both the charging animation and the animation of the execution of Jigglypuff's forward smash have changed. Jigglypuff charges the move by holding its foot behind itself, and then swiftly swings its foot around to execute a roundhouse kick.
- Jab was reverted to how it was in Brawl and Melee, meaning that it jablocks again.
- Jab 2 has more horizontal knockback. This removes the combo potential it once had in the previous game.
- Jab deals slightly less damage.
- Forward tilt can jablock.
- Forward tilt deals more damage.
Aerial attacks
- Forward aerial has more knockback, increasing its KO potential but weakening its combo potential.
- Back aerial has reduced ending lag, improving its ability to combo
- Back aerial now turns Jigglypuff the other way, even when landing with the move, similarly to Marth's back aerial.
- Up aerial has less landing lag.
- Neutral aerial has less landing lag.
Throws/other attacks
- Jigglypuff now pummels with its foot.
- Back Throw deals more damage.
Special Moves
- When using an uncharged Rollout, Jigglypuff will only roll once, significantly speeding up the animation. This improves its safety.
- Rollout's rebound animation is much faster, and its ending lag has been greatly reduced and is much stronger.
- Jigglypuff will now be able to move after hitting an opponent midair.
- Pound has regained the momentum it lost from the transition from Brawl to SSB4.
- Sing covers more range. It also has less startup and end lag.
- Rest now activates a dramatic slow motion effect upon hitting.
- Rest is now interruptible as soon as Jigglypuff wakes up, making the move much safer.
- Rest kills significantly earlier, making the move safer to use for KOing opponents.
- Puff Up is now much faster than the previous games. When it ends, Jigglypuff aesthetically "pops", and then deflates to normal size, mimicking a balloon. Jigglypuff additionally shrinks considerably faster at the end. It also has an angry expression while inflating, resembling the face the Jigglypuff from the anime makes when someone falls asleep.
- Puff Up now has a second, shockwave-like hitbox at the climax of the move.
