Cloud (クラウド, Cloud) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was confirmed on June 12th, 2018. Cloud will once again be voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in all versions of Ultimate, albeit with recycled voice clips.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  •   As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Cloud's model features a more subdued color scheme. His clothing features subtle detailing.

Attributes

  •   Like all characters, Cloud's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.
  •   Cloud's Limit Break gauge is shown next to his character HUD.

Ground moves

  •   Dash attack can now hit opponents that are hanging on ledges.
  •   Up smash no longer has a hitbox at the end of the attack behind Cloud.

Aerial moves

  •   All aerials have less landing lag.
  •   Neutral aerial has an altered animation with reduced range.
  •   Up aerial no longer has a hitbox during the sword's initial ascension. This increases its startup, weakens its combo potential and prevents it from hitting grounded opponents as easily.
  •   Down aerial autocancels later.

Special moves

  •   Cross Slash has a sleeker design inspired from Dissidia Final Fantasy instead of the brush-like strikes from Smash 4.
  •   Limit Cross Slash's strikes slow down significantly against shield.
  •   Limit Cross Slash has lowered knockback.
  •   There is now a wider window for Climhazzard's downward slash to snap on to the ledge.
  •   Climhazzard's downward slash has less endlag.
  •   Limit Charge charges faster.
  •   A fully charged Limit Break will lose its charge if it is not used within 15 seconds.
  •   If Cloud takes damage while charging Limit Charge, he will now lose some Limit[1]
  •   Finishing Touch has a smaller hitbox.

Trivia

  • A section of Cloud's trailer pictures him using his side taunt with R.O.B. in the distance, who is promptly struck by either Pikachu's or Pichu's Thunder. This is a direct reference to magic-casting and its animation in Final Fantasy, with Thunder being a basic black magic spell.
  • Cloud’s official render resembles his idle animation from Final Fantasy VII and Smash Bros.
