The stock glitch is a glitch in Super Smash Bros. Melee that allows the player to play as a character with the stock design of another character. This will also show the character of the stock design they're using underneath the character roster. Also, the token will be on the character they're actually using to fight when they do this glitch. If the player presses Y or X after they've done the glitch correctly, the bottom of the screen will show the actual character and the stock glitch won't work. The glitch was discovered in 2009.

The stock glitch can be seen in both tournament and friendly matches. Smashers often use the stock icons of low-tiered characters, such as Kirby or Zelda for humorous effect.

Initiating the glitch

To perform the glitch, the player must first select a character. After this, they must hit the B button once, then place the icon over another character. However, they must not press the A button. Instead, they must press the Y button once, then press L + R + Start. After this, they must go back to VS. Mode and Melee, and press Start. If done correctly, the glitch should occur.

For an unknown reason, Kirby, Yoshi, and Captain Falcon are unable to perform the glitch and cannot have different stock designs.
