Spectator Mode
Spectator was an online mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl available with the game's Nintendo Wi-Fi setup, accessible within the With Anyone menu. Similar to spectator modes in other console games with online connectivity, this mode allowed players to remotely view online brawls in action between other players. The matches that could be viewed were selected randomly, and none of the identities of the players controlling the characters on the spectator's screen was ever displayed.
Spectator Mode loaded replays of online matches; as such, some problems associated with desynched replays could appear in the mode.
Betting
The Spectator Mode allowed players to gamble in-game, through the use of coins to bet on combatants before matches started. Betting was optional, and the player could bet from 1 to 100 coins, provided they had that amount. While winning a bet would grant more significant rewards, 1 to 10 Stickers were also randomly given out after a match in which the player has bet, regardless if the corresponding player or team had won or not.
Placing bets on the winner of the match would yield a number of coins bet alongside a multiplier. Two fighters and Team Battles would have a multiplier of 1.8, three fighters would have a multiplier of 2.8, and four fighters would have a multiplier of 3.8.
Occasionally, the viewer were offered a "Bonus Chance", whereby if they correctly guessed who won, a bonus reward will be earned, randomly picked from the following list:
- Small sticker bundle, consisting of 10 stickers.
- Medium sticker bundle, consisting of 20 stickers.
- Large sticker bundle, consisting of around 45 stickers.
- A relatively rare trophy.
- A CD, provided there were still random songs left to unlock.
- Double winnings from the bet.
- Triple winnings from the bet (the number of coins paid out capped at 999).
The coins were deducted from the player's count when the match started. As a result, if the player foresaw their bet failing to pan out, they could not reset the console or otherwise attempt to win their coins back.
Trivia
- On the NTSC version of the game, if a match was a free-for-all, the top-right corner would incorrectly read "Quick Brawl", as opposed to the correct term, "Basic Brawl". This error was later fixed for the PAL regions.
