Kirby Hats of the starter characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee
This article is about Kirby's different Copy Abilities in Super Smash Bros. Melee. For other uses, see Copy Ability (disambiguation).

In every Super Smash Bros. game so far, Kirby has had the ability to copy any other character's standard-special move (besides other Kirbys). When Kirby copies one of his opponents, he will also bear a resemblance to that character. Here is what Kirby looks like when he copies the other characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The trophies in Melee refer to them as Kirby Hats.

Character Features obtained Special move Notes
Bowser Kirbybowser.png Bowser's hair, eyebrows, and horns Fire Breath Kirby can flame cancel in all versions of the game, while Bowser can only do so in NTSC 1.0 and 1.1.
Captain Falcon Kirbyfalcon.png C. Falcon's helmet (with translucent visor) Falcon Punch Amusingly imitates the "Falcon Punch!" shout. This imitation has become famous in its own right.
Donkey Kong Kirbydk.png Donkey Kong's fur and hair Giant Punch Since the move puts Donkey Kong in helpless state when used in midair, Kirby will also become helpless when used in midair as well.
Dr. Mario Dr Mario Kirby.png Dr. Mario's headlamp Megavitamin Kirby's Megavitamins don't imitate the full sound effects of Dr. Mario's, instead only making the Koopa Shell sound on impact.
Falco Kirbyfalco.png Falco's beak, "mohawk", and reddish eye colouring Blaster Both Falco and Fox's Blasters bear resemblance to Laser Kirby's attack (except that it can't bounce off slopes).
Fox Fox KirbySSBM.png Fox's ears and helmet Blaster Kirby can short hop triple laser, while Fox cannot.
Ganondorf Ganondorf KirbySSBM.png Ganondorf's hair, eyebrows, and head ornament Warlock Punch
Ice Climbers Kirbyiceclimber.png Popo's blue parka Ice Shot Less effective than the original since Kirby never has a partner.
Jigglypuff Kirbyjiiggly.png Jigglypuff's ears and hair tuft Rollout This Kirby hat is whatever colour Kirby is, instead of Jigglypuff pink. Also, Kirby says "Puu-rin!" for the move (Jigglypuff's Japanese name being Purin), regardless of the game's current language settings.
Link Kirbylink.png Link's floppy cap Bow Looks similar to Sword Kirby, since the Sword Kirby hat is likely a reference to Link.
Luigi Kirbyluigi.png Luigi's cap Fireball
Mario Mario Kirby.png Mario's cap Fireball As Kirby is shorter than Mario, his Fireball is likely to vanish faster due to bouncing too much, unless it's used in the air.
Marth Kirbymarth.png Marth's hair and crown Shield Breaker
Mewtwo Mewtwo Kirby.png Mewtwo's ears and tail Shadow Ball The ears and tail are Kirby's colors. As Kirby is much shorter than Mewtwo, his Shadow Ball is more likely to collide with the ground unless Kirby jumps first.
Mr. Game & Watch Game and Watch Kirby.png Mr. Game & Watch's colour palette of black with a grey outline; also has white eyes and mouth Chef This the only copy where Kirby doesn't gain a clothing garment or change in physical attribute. Kirby won't change into 2D like Mr Game and Watch.
Ness Kirbyness.png Ness's baseball cap PK Flash Kirby also does not wear the hat exactly as Ness does; he wears it backward, whereas Ness wears it sideways. This may be a reference to Yo-Yo Kirby, Wheel Kirby, and/or Paint Kirby.
Peach Peach Kirby.png Peach's crown Toad
Pichu Pichu Kirby.png A hat of Pichu's head and tail Thunder Jolt Kirby will take 1% recoil damage from using this attack, just like Pichu.
Pikachu Pikachu KirbySSBM.png A hat of Pikachu's head and tail Thunder Jolt
Roy Roy Kirby.png Roy's hair and headband Flare Blade Kirby will take 10% recoil damage from using this attack when it is fully charged, just like how Roy can.
Samus Kirbysamus.png Samus' helmet (covering whole body) with translucent visor Charge Shot
Sheik Sheik Kirby.png Sheik's headcloth and hair Needle Storm
Yoshi Kirbyyoshi.png A hat of Yoshi's head Egg Lay Oddly enough, Kirby grows a second tongue to use Egg Lay.
Young Link Young Link Kirby.png Young Link's floppy cap Fire Bow Like Link, this Kirby hat looks like Sword Kirby.
Zelda Kirbyzelda.png Young Zelda's headdress Nayru's Love This is the only Kirby hat in Melee that isn't based on the character model he is copying. It is taken from Zelda's younger version from "Ocarina of Time".

The game provides a series of trophies that briefly summarize the ability of each available hat:

Image Name Represented Description
Kirby Hat 1 Trophy.png Kirby Hat 1 Veteran starters (part 1) Here's Kirby sporting several results of his Copy ability. In Link's hat he can shoot arrows, while Mario's cap gives him access to Fireballs. The Donkey Kong suit offers up a Giant Punch, while Samus's helmet allows Kirby to fire off charged-up energy shots. Finally, while wearing the Yoshi hat, Kirby can swallow enemies and turn them into eggs. (Super Smash Bros. Melee, 12/01)
Kirby Hat 2 Trophy.png Kirby Hat 2 Veteran starters (part 2) Kirby's got several of his finest hats on here. In Ness's baseball cap, he can use the power of PSI to unleash PK Flash, while Captain Falcon's visor gives him the ability to unleash a huge punch. His adorable Pikachu cap comes complete with stored-up electric charges, allowing him to shock his foes, and the Fox ears come with a matching blaster. (Super Smash Bros. Melee, 12/01)
Kirby Hat 3 Trophy.png Kirby Hat 3 Newcomer starters With all of these hats, Kirby could open his own haberdashery! Peach's crown lets him use Toad, while the Ice Climber parka allows him to shoot ice blocks. Kirby has Fire Breath in the Bowser horns, and he can copy Zelda in both her forms. In Zelda's headdress he can use Nayru's Love, while Sheik's wrap gives him a needle arsenal. (Super Smash Bros. Melee, 12/01)
Kirby Hat 4 Trophy.png Kirby Hat 4 Unlockable non-clones Looks like Kirby's copied a bunch of hidden characters! In Luigi's hat, he can shoot green Fireballs, while copying Mewtwo gives him the power to throw Shadow Balls. Copying Mr. Game & Watch lets Kirby hurl sausages, and doing the same to Jigglypuff earns him a Rollout move. Marth's hair comes complete with a powerful Shield Breaker move. (Super Smash Bros. Melee, 12/01)
Kirby Hat 5 Trophy.png Kirby Hat 5 Clones Secret hats galore! In Pichu's hat Kirby can shoot out electricity, while Dr. Mario's headgear gives him Megavitamins. When Kirby wears Falco's beak, he gets to use Falco's powerful Blaster; by the same token, he can fire arrows when in Young Link's cap. When Kirby copies Ganondorf he gets the Warlock Punch, and copying Roy produces a Flare Blade. (Super Smash Bros. Melee, 12/01)

Trivia

  • The pose used while using Bowser's Fire Breath is taken from the Fire ability of the Kirby series.
  • The costume used when Kirby copies the Ice Climbers is identical to Freeze Kirby as he appeared in later Kirby games.
  • If Kirby swallows Nana, Kirby will still get Popo's blue parka.
