Steve (スティーブ, Steve) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the second third-party representative from Microsoft after Banjo & Kazooie. He was confirmed as a playable character on October 1st, 2020 as the second downloadable character from Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Alex, a Zombie, and an Enderman will also appear as alternate costumes. Steve is classified as fighter #77.

Known Information

  • Similar to Mr. Game & Watch, Steve appears to be lifted directly from his home game; his model and movement appearing identical to that of Minecraft.
  • Steve's weapon stays in his hand momentarily depending on the move he uses.
  • Steve can crawl.

Moveset

  • Steve appears to have a crafting mechanic, where he can mine the ground to obtain materials and upgrade his weapons by planting a Crafting Table.
  • Steve can place Blocks, which appear to break soon after placing them. Currently, the only known blocks he can place are Dirt, Oak Planks, Stone, Smooth Stone, and TNT.
    • Additionally, Steve can place Redstone and a Wooden Pressure Plate to detonate TNT. This appears to trigger Special Zoom.
  • Uses Elytra to glide. Presumably his up special move.

Reveal trailer

Trivia

  • Steve was created by the Swedish video game company Mojang, making him the second DLC fighter that was created outside of Japan.
    • The first were Banjo & Kazooie, created by the UK-based developer Rare, which are coincidentally also owned by Microsoft.
  • After Mr. Game & Watch, Steve is the second playable character to look completely identical to their original appearance, the first third-party character to do so, and the first to come from a conventional video game rather than an LCD game.
    • The Enderman alternate costume, however, was slightly altered to match the dimensions of Steve.
  • Steve's reveal trailer contains multiple references to Minecraft:
    • The Enderman picking up the crate references their affinity for picking up blocks and carrying them around.
      • The Enderman also hides from the rain on Distant Planet. It references the fact that Endermen can receive damage from water in Minecraft.
    • Wolf throwing the Zombie causes it to drop meat, a reference to Rotten Flesh, which is their most common drop.
      • The fact that the fighter is Wolf is significant, as wolves in Minecraft can be tamed and can help the player in combat.
    • Zombie is revealed breaking down a wooden door, which is an ability that Zombies have in Minecraft when playing on harder difficulties.
  • Steve's Final Smash sends the opponent into a stronghold filled with TNT, where they are attacked by zombies and creepers, which detonates the explosives. The stronghold is a structure in Minecraft used to access the End dimension via an End Portal, though it is located underground in the game, as opposed to its depiction in Smash.
