Origin

The attract mode of Pac-Man gives names to the ghosts.

The four ghosts have become recurring elements in the Pac-Man series. Their appearance is based off of the 8-bit sprites from the original Pac-Man. Their movement patterns are also based off of the original game: Blinky follows Pac-Man, Pinky ambushes Pac-Man between her and Blinky, Inky aims for a location based on Blinky's distance from Pac-Man, and Clyde emulates Blinky's movement pattern but steers himself into the lower left corner when he comes close to Pac-Man. Twice per round, Blinky speeds up after a certain amount of dots are eaten; this behavior is incorporated into the ghosts' Assist Trophy by having them speed up over its duration. While additional ghosts have made appearances in subsequent Pac-Man titles, the four introduced in the original arcade title have remained the most iconic, and thus have made the most appearances.

Each of the ghosts has a different personality:

  • Blinky is the leader of the ghosts. He is hot-headed, determined, and enjoys frightening others. In the Pac-Man World games, he is also shown to be sneaky and conceited. In Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, Blinky is well-meaning and loyal to his friends, but enjoys picking on Pac-Man sometimes. Sometimes Clyde and Blinky's names are switched, making Blinky the cowardly orange ghost.
  • Pinky is the female ghost with a crush on Pac-Man. In the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Pinky is male and a "strong but dumb" character. In the Pac-Man World games, she is cunning, sly and mean. In Pac-Man Party, she is portrayed as adorable, sweet and clever, but in Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, she is jealous, prone to anger and dimwitted, but devoted to Pac-Man.
  • Inky is the goofy, shy and somewhat dim member of the ghosts. In the Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Inky is extremely stupid and clumsy. In Pac-Man Party, Inky is afraid of spiders. In Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, Inky is more intelligent, sarcastic and accident-prone.
  • Clyde is the cowardly, stupid ghost who is scared of Pac-Man. In the Pac-Man World games, Clyde is seen as the most incompetent of the ghosts. Although Clyde is usually portrayed as dimwitted, in Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures he is shown to be more intelligent than he seems, and the nicest of all the ghosts. Sometimes Clyde and Blinky's names are switched, making Clyde the angry, vengeful red ghost.
