Announced at E3 2001, ReDeads are common enemies that are found in Melee's Adventure Mode stage, Underground Maze.
Character description
The ReDeads in Melee take the appearance of zombies or undeads, and are based on the Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask version of the ReDead. They come in two different colors:
- Light brown, which are only found in the Underground Maze
- Dark brown, that appear out of container items.
Despite their structure, ReDeads can still attack any character, size independent.
History
ReDeads first debuted in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. They were found in Hyrule Castle Town when Adult Link woke up from his seven-year slumber. The sky in Castle Town there was also in Red and had clouds as if Ganondorf placed a curse on Castle Town and destroyed and everyone was turned into a ReDead, although if you leave to Hyrule Field, the sky will be normal. The place was in shambles and surrounded by these monsters. In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, they are similar, but can be rendered harmless if Link wears a mask associated with the dead. They appear again in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, but the design has changed. They are less frightening due to their cartoonish look. You can find them in the Earth Temple as well as Ganon's tower on the way to Molgera for the second battle. However, the attack method is the same. Another appearance is in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Here, they are called ReDead Knights. They appear in areas like the Arbiter's Grounds and Cave of Ordeals. After letting out a high shriek to paralyse their victims temporarily, they slash at them with their powerful, two-handed swords.
According to the ReDead trophy, these beings were evil animations created by Ganondorf, and were not actually dead people (although this view isn't supported by the Zelda series). ReDeads would attack Link by letting out a shriek that would impede his movement. They then attack by jumping on the victim's back and delivering a series of bites.
ReDeads do not have a significant role in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as they only appear as stickers.
Role
ReDeads appear "freely" in the Underground Maze, and come out of crates and barrels in a regular battle in Melee. They attack other characters by limping towards them. Once the ReDead identifies its victim, it will charge at it, latch on and bite it. The amount of damage the ReDead deals depends on the difficulty. The higher the difficulty, the more damage it deals. Mashing the controller buttons shakes the creature off, stopping it's damaging process. After a few attacks, the ReDead will fall down on the ground, and will remain so for some seconds. Now is the time for the player to deliver a final blow to destroy it.
The ones in the Underground Maze are usually found in the main area with all the broken, floating platforms. Usually, there are about 1-2 ReDeads per platform. These usually fall down when attacked, or sometimes, on their own. In other areas, specially the tunnels connecting the map, they can be found in groups of 3-4. ReDeads will sometimes carry a trophy when they are KO'ed.
Earlier trailers of Melee showed different characters fighting ReDeads on the Temple stage. The ReDeads that come out of container items are harder to spot, because they are darker than the regular ones. Although rare to show up inside one, they can be spawned at will using an Action Replay. They are one of the four common enemies that can appear on any stage. For every ReDead the player KO's, they will get 800 points added to their total score.
Trophy description
Seven years after Ganondorf took control of Hyrule, ReDeads roamed the ruins of castle town, moaning. Link was shocked at the state of the town, and the apparent lack of survivors. He later learned that the townsfolks had evacuated to safety, and the ReDeads were magic animated into hideous humanoid shapes.
