Pikachu takes part in Target Blast in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Target Blast (スマッシュボンバー, Smash Bomber) is a gameplay mode that appears in the Stadium of Super Smash Bros. 4. The player is tasked with inflicting damage to a bomb on a special platform, then launching it into a structure composed of various blocks filled with Targets: the goal is to destroy as many targets as possible. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U features three separate stages with different layouts, with only the first one being shared with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

There is a 10-second timer which starts when the player touches or attacks the bomb. When hit with a powerful attack, the bomb is sent flying, destroying most objects in its path. When the timer runs out the bomb explodes, destroying any objects around it, as well as potentially starting physics-based chain reactions due to the blocks around the bomb being dislodged. As a result of this, much of the strategy in Target Blast comes from deciding when and how the bomb should be launched.

Every play session is structured in two rounds, each one with its bomb: the final score is the combined score of both rounds. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS the two bombs are the same size, while in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U the second bomb is bigger. If the player fails to launch the bomb out of the starting platform before the time runs out, they will get KOed by it and receive a score of zero for the round.

Breaking all fifteen red targets (27 in Stage 2 and 23 in Stage 3) awards the player with an additional 30,000 points: if this happens during the first round, the structure is rebuilt for the second. Some of the red targets may be randomly replaced with special targets with a Trophy or Custom Part icon: destroying them yields a random object of the depicted category.

The scores in this mode are used as part of Global Smash Power.

Score Values

Each type of block has a score value associated with it.

The value increases when the bomb detonates, giving the player even bigger points.

Block Type Value
Grey Wood 100
Wooden 200
Green Target/Bomb 400
Red Target/Equipment/Trophy 2000

Trivia

  • The explosions of the bomb used in Target Blast has well over enough power to OHKO in normal conditions. It also completely fills Little Mac's Power Meter instantly.
  • In a Pic of the Day on Miiverse, Masahiro Sakurai mistakenly refers to Target Blast as Target Smash, a mode that is not available in Super Smash Bros. 4.
  • This minigame bears resemblance to the popular mobile game Angry Birds, where the focus is to topple buildings and destroy target enemies through the use of projectiles launched from a distance.
    • The bomb's function is also similar to the black bomb bird from that same game, which exploded after either the player tapped the screen or a set amount of time.
