What happened was only Master Hand (in port 3) showed up, even though both Players 3 and 4 showed the Master Hand icon. However, when an attack was performed, Master Hand would attack as if a target was there (even though there clearly wasn't), and both Players 3 and 4 received damage. What I wanna know is if anyone has an explanation for this phenomenon. Diffrence with versions?
I try the glitch, and it doesn't work. I have a late version, so maybe that's the reason? When I try it, the game just freezes with looping music.--{{SUBST:User:MewFan128/sig}} 01:09, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
It freezes kinda randomly sometimes. I have version 1.2, and it works for me. Just keep trying! Dr. Pain 99 (talk) 17:30, June 6, 2010 (UTC)
Merge discussion
IMO, this is one of the most notable glitches in Melee. I think that being able to play as a boss via glitch warrants a page, but Miles doesn't seem to think so. Time to vote/discuss. --Posted by Pikamander2 (Talk) at 23:00, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Keep Expand it, then we'll see. It's definitely notable, and I'm just going to put a link in the section until this discussion is over.Smoreking(T) (c) 23:06, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Keep. In my opinion, a page shouldn't be merged until it's had time to "accumulate" a bit. Toomai Glittershine eXemplary Logic cntrbs 23:25, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Keep I'd like a little more info on this. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 00:23, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Works on 1.2
I have version 1.2, and it works for me. However, it freezes on Target Test, Classic, Training, and Stock Matches. Also it don't work in tournament mode. If you try it on this mold, it will freeze the gameSmash X 5432 (talk) 11:47, 2 February 2014 (EST)
The glitch freazes the game iif a player is zelda.
From what I have tested the game freazes if a player is zelda, I have tried various alterations (mode, if there is memory or not) and zelda seems to be a consitant crasher.--68.204.246.64 02:32, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- My theory -- this may be related to the Sheik connection on the canceled match results screen. Miles (talk) 13:31, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Multi Man note
When playing in Multi-Man Mode with Master Hand, his high score goes to Mario. Should we add it? --Posted by Pikamander2 (Talk) at 16:33, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Not Working!
I tried the two controller stategy and managed to get to the stage select screen, but when I selected a stage, Player 3 was still just a normal character.
Make sure Player 3 is set to HMN, with no character selected.
Dr. Pain 99 (talk) 22:50, June 5, 2010 (UTC)
2 min time only?
I have tried the glitch in quite a few modes, I have no issues with other modes.--68.204.246.64 05:04, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
cant control master hand
i tried the 2 controller verson. it works but i cant control him. also, when i press L+R+A+START, sheik's name is in the place of master hand's name and there's no one clapping in the player 3 spot. <span style="border:2px outset #000099;background-color: #000099;-moz-border-radius:3px">'''''[[User:Supercoolguy147|<span style="color:#ffffff;">SCG</span>]] [[User talk:Supercoolguy147|<span style="color:#ffffff;">147</span>]]'''''</span> (talk) 22:08, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Your signature is... broken. I don't even know how, but I do know that even if you were to fix it, at its current length it's over the limit. You should make it short and sweet, yet clear (i.e. your username must be in it). I can't explain why you can't control Master Hand, but the fact that Sheik's name is in place of Master Hand's is already in the article, as is the fact that there's no one clapping for him. PenguinofDeath 22:34, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
It's worth mentioning in Article that you can only attack using the D-Pad, and you can't fly him around.84.67.29.215 13:32, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
The 2 controller one doesn't work
I tried it, but it didn't work! WHY? It was the 2 controller one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.23.75.64 (talk • contribs) 19:34, 4 August 2009
It's a hard glitch to do, so it takes a couple tries. but i think 2 controllers are the easiest, but it took me like a million tries to do it. but, it does work
Is it true?
Is it really true that he has to hover? Or can he fly? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.23.75.64 (talk • contribs) 19:37, 4 August 2009
U can't move 'im
You can't move master Hand AT ALL!! that's REALLY lame 174.23.75.64 20:51, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Is your controller in the third slot ? Do you use the D-pad instead of the joystick ? Paratroopafan (talk) 23:11, June 5, 2010 (UTC)
Also, you can't move Master Hand around the stage. U can only control him with moves. Dr. Pain 99 (talk) 17:35, June 6, 2010 (UTC)
The game froze
I tried the 2-player glitch, and when I selected the stage, it wouldn't load!--Shadow34 14:56, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Shadow34
it happens a lot. it happen twice to me, but that's because the game wasn't ment for you to play as master hand.
CPU Master Hand???
The Article says that "It is possible to have a computer player Master Hand if you have a computer player with no selected character while using the name entry glitch.", but how to change names to computer played characters? --CaioNV (talk) 23:30, December 22, 2009 (UTC)
- I'm removing it. It doesn't seem possible. 98.117.158.220 05:47, January 1, 2010 (UTC)
I was able to get a computer master hand in by having a player set to CPU w/ no character selected, and doing the name entry on a seperate, HMN player. CPU Master hand will attack whether he's P3 or not. Dr. Pain 99 (talk) 01:07, June 8, 2010 (UTC)
- So it does work. Put it in the article then since you pointed it out.--Megatron1 (talk) 01:11, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Event match
Did you know that if you load event match 50 (the one where you face Master hand and Crazy hand) you can still play as master hand? the Master hands appear in the same place. If you kill master hand first, you can do attacks with Crazy hand. Is it worth placing in the article? 98.117.158.220 05:46, January 1, 2010 (UTC)
has moves my ASS!
i tried the 1 controller option and it worked but all he does is float there. (MADD)
Make sure that master hand is player 3, and that u are inputting moves on the d-pad, not the analog stick.

Won't work at all
I spent about an hour using BOTH methods, and none of them worked. I even wrote down the instructions, and no matter how my timing would be, no matter what, it wouldn't work. For 2 player mode: Everything works up until the point where player 2 and 1 press A at the same time (P1 over Name field, and P2 over Back). For the 1 player mode: I tried the "press A and B at same time. Release A while holding B, and press A when cursor is just above Name Entry". All it does is take me to the Name Maker, or just takes me out of CSS back to the menu. Is the glitch even real?--Shade 15:22, June 19, 2010 (UTC)
- The glitch is real. I've done it several times. Just keep trying. You have to get the timing just right. It took me a while to do it the first time, too. Dr. Pain 99 Talk 15:28, June 19, 2010 (UTC)
- For the once player version, make sure at the begining you press A slightly before B. Hope that helps! Mr. Anon teh awsome 20:49, July 2, 2010 (UTC)
Name Change?
Guys, wasn't this glitch called the Name Select Glitch (or something like that)? -Cross Drago too lazy to log in

Just why should a fan made guide to a glitch character be linked to in this Wiki's articles? Omega Tyrant 05:31, July 4, 2010 (UTC)
- Because it is a useful resource for information. Smash Wiki is an encyclopedia, and just as encyclopedia's reference books and such, I thought I would see if it was worth putting here. I guess not though. :P Grim Tuesday (talk) 05:50, July 4, 2010 (UTC)
- Perhaps if Master Hand had his own boards on SWF and they posted a guide for him, then that might be acceptable to link to since we link every character's SSBB article to guide put up by their respective boards. But to my knowledge, Master Hand has no boards since he is a glitch character and has no competitively following. A guide for him would also be rather unnecessary since he is invincible in all but Stamina Mode. Omega Tyrant 06:06, July 4, 2010 (UTC)
- He isn't invincible. The guide says that. Grim Tuesday (talk) 07:23, July 4, 2010 (UTC)
- Technically, he cannot die in any mode but Stamina Mode. However, when he wins, the game freezes, which results in a forfiet in tournaments that allow him. Even so, he can't die in any mode but Stamina. However, if players are on the same lives, the victor is based on percantage.--MegaTron1XD 16:23, July 4, 2010 (UTC)
- Technically, yes. But there is a simple solution to those problems. If Master Hand gets a KO you can immediately L+R+A+Start because he has already one, and otherwise you can just do it 1 second before the end of the round to prevent a freeze. I don't think there are any tournaments that DON'T allow him actually... Grim Tuesday (talk) 23:00, July 4, 2010 (UTC)
- I think I know a place for your guide. You're working on having a list of stages and how he acts on them. You could copy and paste that here when it's finished. I'll try to help you if I can. Mr. Anon teh awsome 23:46, July 4, 2010 (UTC)

What's up with the 2 controller method?
Is it really as random as everyone says, or is the timing slightly different than pressing the button on both controllers at the same time. I've tried it on Dolphin with the A button set to the same key on both controllers (the equivalent of having two Wavebird receivers set to the same frequency), and it doesn't seem to work. The one controller method works just fine, though. --Pimanrules (talk) 03:20, July 5, 2010 (UTC)
- Maybe it's a problem with your emulator? Mr. Anon teh awsome 03:27, July 5, 2010 (UTC)
Tier position
He has a tier position. See here. The bottom tier comprises of "Gengar", but that is defined as "glitch characters". As there is only one known glitch character, Master Hand comprises the bottom tier. Sir Anon the great 04:05, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
- The "Gengar Tier" is obviously a joke, just like the MBR banning Meta Knight from Melee tournaments. Omega Tyrant 04:08, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
- Really? I feel really stupid now. Anon 04:11, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
Taunt?
Does the Master Hand have a taunt? I'd try it myself, but I only have 2 Gamecube controllers so I don't know. You got PWN'D by Link
- No; pressing the D-pad is how he does some of his moves, so having a taunt would break that. Toomai Glittershine The Obfuscating 19:49, 7 June 2012 (EDT)
- Also, you need not have 3 controllers to perform this glitch. You just need a controller plugged into the 3rd port. DoctorPain99 {ROLLBACKER} 19:56, 7 June 2012 (EDT)
- Yeah, I misread it :o You got PWN'D by Link
Sheik and Master Hand
Guys, does anyone have an explanation to why Sheik's name appears in the results screen? I thought Master Hand's ID was 0, so why does it display Sheik instead of a glitched name, or nothing? or why not Mario's seem as 1 is nearer to 0 and if Master Hand has a high score in Multi-Man Melee it goes to Mario and not Sheik. ----- Conanshinichi 20:41, 17 July 2013 (EDT)
- Yeah it's weird, since no internal list I know of puts Sheik first or last. Still, the fact that Sheik is the only character that can't be directly selected may have something to do with it. Toomai Glittershine The Wacko 20:45, 17 July 2013 (EDT)
- Perhaps, it's because there are different IDs for the Victory Screen and maybe Sheik has 0 for that kind of ID? Who knows. ----- Conanshinichi 21:03, 17 July 2013 (EDT)
- Personally my guess is that it's not really an ID thing at all, but a coincidence based on the order the character names are in the file (which I don't know). Maybe Sheik is last there or something. Toomai Glittershine The Labbie 21:07, 17 July 2013 (EDT)

Didn't freeze
So today I did this glitch on Lightning Melee mode and had a CPU Zelda and 2 other CPUs. While I was playing, it wasn't freezing at all and she can even transform into Sheik without the game crashing. I know this shouldn't happen. Any idea how it disn't crash and should we delete the part about it? Terrible is Terrible 22:05, 21 July 2013 (EDT)
- I'll test this at some point (hopefully tomorrow), then get back to you. DoctorPain99 01:40, 22 July 2013 (EDT)
- Zelda seems to work perfectly fine, but only in Lightning and Slo-mo. Strange. DoctorPain99 15:12, 22 July 2013 (EDT)
This Should Merge With the Name Entry Glitch
This glitch is a subset of the Name Entry one, so it makes no sense to have two separate articles if they both contain the same information.Robo4900 (talk) 02:52, 2 February 2014 (EST)
- Have you ever seen.... how big this article is? Besides, it's already in the Name Entry glitch category, that's enough. 93.105.60.106 02:56, 2 February 2014 (EST)
Let me ask this...
Simply put, exploiting glitches is my favorite thing to do in video games. And this glitch is definitely one of my favorites. That being said, I was screwing around with it, and decided to do the one player method with two controllers. Neither controller had a character. (I was trying to see if Crazy Hand could show up or something.) The result was...interesting, to say the least.
What happened was only Master Hand (in port 3) showed up, even though both Players 3 and 4 showed the Master Hand icon. However, when an attack was performed, Master Hand would attack as if a target was there (even though there clearly wasn't), and both Players 3 and 4 received damage.
