Occasionally, the special effects on the move may be offset vertically by quite a bit, appearing above or below Yoshi.
This can be easily reproduced on [[75 m]]: if a Yoshi on the large, top girder uses Egg Roll to the right, and drops onto the top-right set of girders, the glitch can be seen.

Egg Roll (ごろごろたまご, Egg Rolling) is the side special move of Yoshi, whereupon Yoshi forms a large egg around himself and begins to roll around the stage. The player can steer it by tilting the control stick left or right, and stop the move by pressing the special button again to break the egg. In Melee, it can be used to increase Yoshi's horizontal recovery; while it can be an efficient way to pass edge-guarders, should the opponent intercept Yoshi he is unlikely to have another attempt. If preferred, the player controlling the move may wish to hold the special button. This makes it more difficult to control, but allows more damage.

In Brawl, while the move has potent momentum canceling properties, Yoshi cannot move sideways after using it in the air, making it useless as a recovery move; since Yoshi then becomes helpless after ending the move in the air, it winds up not being useful for such a purpose. The move invoking helplessness also makes it very easy to self-destruct with. The move also has notoriously poor hitbox placement compared to Yoshi's hurtboxes and so is very unsafe to use.

With the ability to move at a fast, constant speed across flat ground, the Egg Roll is useful for quickly moving through certain one-player stages, such as F-Zero Grand Prix, and is also useful in certain Subspace Emissary stages for similar reasons.

Egg Roll no longer leaves Yoshi helpless in Super Smash Bros. 4.

Customization

Special Move customization was added in Super Smash Bros. 4. These are the known variations:

  1. Heavy Egg Roll: Slower, yet stronger variant.
  2. Light Egg Roll: Bounces once while traveling forward. Upon landing, Yoshi breaks out of the egg.

Origin

The move seems to be unique to the Super Smash Bros. series, but may be based on Yoshi's Story where upon eating a Turbo Tulip, Yoshi could encase himself into an egg and fling himself at enemies, out-of-reach objects, or distant locations.

The Egg Roll would later appear in the Mario series as a special move in Mario Power Tennis and Mario Strikers Charged.
