Flamethrower (かえんほうしゃ Kaen Hō Sha, Flame Emission) is Charizard's neutral special move. It is visually similar to Bowser's Fire Breath, though with smaller flames and with longer range. The stream of flames can be directed up or down by tilting the control stick in a particular direction, similarly to Bowser's Fire Breath. The flame dies down the longer the attack is used, but it will never stop. However, the flames will become extremely small if the player keeps holding the special button.

Description from the Instruction Booklet

Press and hold the B Button to breathe fire. Flames weaken over time.

Down throw

Charizard also uses Flamethrower in its down throw. Charizard throws it opponent to the ground, and then burns them with Flamethrower. Has mainly horizontal knockback, cannot be reflected, even by a Franklin Badge. Its down throw can KO at higher levels of damage, but can be DI'd out of. This inflicts a total of 6% damage.

Use by other Pokémon

  • Charmander - When Charmander appears in Saffron City, it uses Flamethrower in one direction by breathing fire from its mouth.
  • Charizard (Poké Ball) - Charizard appears from a Poké Ball in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, where it uses Flamethrower. Charizard alternates between breathing fire to the left then right.
  • Cyndaquil - Cyndaquil appears from a Poké Ball in Melee, where it uses Flamethrower in one direction, like Charmander. Cyndaquil generates the fire from the flame on its back.
