The Master Ball is an item confirmed to appear in Super Smash Bros. 4. It functions similarly to a Poké Ball, and releases a Pokémon when thrown, but unlike a Poké Ball, it releases only rare or legendary Pokémon. It is not yet known if the Master Ball will be a separate item from the Poké Ball, or if a Poké Ball may instead spawn as a Master Ball. It is also unclear whether a given Pokémon can appear from both types of balls, or whether both types of balls have mutually exclusive rosters. SDCC footage shows legendary Pokémon appearing from both Poké Balls.

Origin

In the Pokémon series, the Master Ball is the rarest of all Poké Ball variants, often with the player only able to legitimately obtain one of them in each game file without resorting to lottery-based minigames or trading. Whereas all other Poké Ball types may fail at capturing a wild Pokémon, a Master Ball will catch any wild Pokémon without fail regardless of their health and status, making it trivial to catch difficult or legendary Pokémon.
