Users with accounts across different Wikias will have some problems if the user name is different. For instance, I cannot edit "SmashWiki" and [http://goldensun.wikia.com Golden Sun's Wiki] simultaneously because it calls for two different logins and once you log out of one, you're logged out of them all. This makes it particularly challenging in the context of moving raw page/template contents out of one wiki via the watchlist and into a new page at SmashWiki. More things that need to be remedied for that post-merge to-do list. --[[User:Randall00|Randall00]] 02:27, 7 March 2008 (UTC) | Users with accounts across different Wikias will have some problems if the user name is different. :You're a user on the Golden Sun wiki? Awesome! =D Anyway... Clearly it's two different accounts on the Wikia kingdom you have now, meaning that one might be called a sockpuppet of the other. I think you could just use your Golden Sun wiki user name to edit the SmashWiki, though I might be wrong... Revision as of 13:04, March 8, 2008
There are a few concerns I have now that wikis have merged. Specifically:
1. Pages dedicated to users, Smashers, that aren't user pages. Why do users need 2 pages about themselves? They don't. How do these pages have use to casual gamers? They don't. There are over 1300 of these Smasher articles. Thats, what, a third of all articles? These need to be moved to user pages, crammed into a small group of articles or deleted. Right?
- Wrong, for there is a difference between a smasher and a user. I have more on that in my contributions, but refuse to go looking for it. --Randall00 02:27, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
2. Templates. You Smash Wikians really like your templates. Some of these are necessary, others, not so much. For example every character has its own special moves template while SSB Wiki has one nifty one that you plug in the character and its moves. So we need to figure out which templates to keep and which to toss. We also need a limit of how many templates we use per page because it really gets ugly when you have 3 big ones stacked.
3. Main Page. No offense but its boring. We need to merge our main pages ASAP. SSB Wiki has had a featured media and featured article section for over a month and now its gone. We need our FAs since they get sent to Gamefaqs and whatnot.
4. We had a launch center that had a lot of effort put in it and I was hoping to display it on the main Page too since Brawl's just a week away. And also I wondered if anyone wanted to make a new logo or have a vote of what logo was preferred, Smash Wiki's or SSB Wiki's.
Any comment, suggestions or resolutions? Bonko24 18:41, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- I THINK I have a resolution, at least to the templates. I know we who come from SmashWiki loves templates, yea... But once, I created templates for each series, one for each Smash game. I had everything in it. Characters, moves, stage locations, stages, items, Poké Ball-Pokémon, Assist Trophies, trophies, stickers and background characters. Yea... but then the moves, Poké Ball-Pokémon, trophies, stickers and background characters disappeard. A little bit later, the three (about each game) started to merg into one, and other ones was created about the special moves. If we could continue to merge the three templates (about each game) into one, and include the Poké Ball-Pokémon aswell as the moves, it would save us, like, hundreds of unnecesary templates.
- Yes, I agree, the articles on users that are in the main namespace should be moved off. Logan
- Smasher articles are a touchy subject. I've been of the opinion that there were probably too many on SmashWiki, but that's not to say it would be fair or proper to remove all of them (and I'm sure some would disagree with my opinion anyway). I think even Wikipedia has an article or two about some important Smash Bros. players, so it would seem very improper if we were to simply remove all articles about people. It's important to remember that, while user pages are indeed about people, they're really better suited when they're kept to being about people in terms of their wiki usage, and not also about why they might be important to the Smash Bros. community (which should most certainly be within the scope of this wiki). That's not to say we can't tell people who truly don't need a Smasher page of their own that they can't just post it on their user page instead, but that can't be a hard and fast rule either. --Kirby King 21:08, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- For Smasher articles, we should only keep the notable ones IMO, like Ken Hoang. For the templates, it's kinda nice to have each character's special moves in their own template so that you don't see a massive template with a whole bunch of moves on a bunch of pages. The Main Page really should be changed; it's too ugly IMO. As for #4, I agree about the logo, that we need to vote on it, though there are two logos now: the Monobook logo and the Monaco/Quartz logo.--Richard 21:34, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- We could always make a Smasher namespace dedicated to Smasher articles, so that we keep actual game content limited to the mainspace. --Charitwo 22:05, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad some of these were brought up for the rest of the community. :)
Re #1: I'll address it (in part) with a link to User talk:Charitwo#Gonko and SmashWiki:Pool Room#Extension requests. That they are of little use to casual gamers is of little doubt; however, they do have merit to SmashWiki'rs as KK said. As I said at #extension requests, I also don't think the majority of the names need to be in the main space; I would be satisfied with redirects out of the main space and into the user space. Randall argues that we shouldn't be the ones to assert notability, as none but Ken and a handful of others have had their names tossed around outside of the Smash World Forums community, whilst many of them are notable within said community. As that's the community which has worked on SmashWiki and not ssb-wikia... I would not disagree with the creation of a Smasher namespace, but having redirects might still be a good thing. As to Crews, I don't know.
Re #2: For the moves of characters, we have one too, which is somewhere in Category:Template namespace templates, it's just that it ended up being substed onto each characters specific template.
#2a: I've been working on consolidating "universe" templates. For example, I merged T:SSBF-Zero, T:SSBBF-Zero, and T:SSBMF-Zero into one template, Template:F-Zero, while also converting colors, the "|" character to the bullet character, and now that I can, my plans are to use MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Common.js table classes "collapsible autocollapse" (and "navbox") to shrink the templates like wikipedia does, and so we can have one all-inclusive template. Atm, T:F-Zero uses T:Navbox, like wikipedia, but it's a hackjob, as I need to poke TOR into changing a setting server-side. I would advise not using it for the moment.
Re #3: I'm guessing the Main Page is at SmashWiki:Merge/Main Page? One of our steadfast admins (prolly Chari) can do that. =]
Re #4: SmashWiki's, definitely. Only thing is is that I have no idea where it went. I PMed KK on the forums to see if he knows...
/me loves giving feedback. --Sky (t | c | w) 23:07, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- Re: Re: #3: I've gone and merged the Main Pages together, in what I hope is suitable for all. Unfortunately, I had to do away with the Featured Media area, as it was significantly cramping the main page on smaller resolutions. What do think? --Sky (t | c | w) 09:15, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- Good lord, these discussions are fragmented... thanks for the links, Sky, but with no watchlist and important community decisions being made on pages that I really just don't know how to find, I simply don't have the energy to divulge the kind of feedback that I would like to. We were so close to establishing some sort of order at SmashWiki and I've written so much already in the process of doing so that I'm exhausted. It would be ridiculous for me to waste the time illustrating that to what is now an entirely new audience who already have a pre-established sense of order and a fundamentally different focus than that of SmashWiki. Especially when there's still a chance that I might log in tomorrow to find that we've merged with WoWwiki and solarcooking.wikia.com. --Randall00 02:10, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
