The Sin and Punishment universe (罪と罰, Sin and Punishment) is a series of on-rails shooters set in a dystopian future published by Nintendo and developed by Treasure.
Franchise description
The series was born out of a desire to use the Nintendo 64 controller in an underutilized way. When Nintendo initially revealed the controller, they showed it could be held in two ways: Left side and Right side. Very few games used the left side, and the team at Treasure wanted to experiment. However, this was eventually scrapped as they assumed players would have a hard time understanding this control scheme. The game would also use a sensor, but this idea was abandoned because it would slow down an already sluggish development cycle.[1] This early version, initially titled Glass Soldier, entered production in 1997 and did not see the light of day until 2000. This is due to Treasure never working on a 3D game before, a large portion of the game being restarted along with the controls, and a significant portion of development being handled by only four full time members. The game finally released as Sin and Punishment. The game is a science fiction rail shooter where the player controls two characters in a war over a global famine. The game initially only released in Japan, though it did release in China on the iQue Player in 2004. It was also released on the Wii Virtual Console as Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Earth in the rest of the world in 2007 (which ironically is the year the game takes place in).
After going dormant for several years, the series unexpectedly returned in 2009 on Wii with Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Universe in Japan. Even more unexpectedly, the game received a worldwide physical release in 2010, called Sin and Punishment: Star Successor in North America and Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies in Europe. The game is mostly similar to the first game, where it introduced new gameplay mechanics and progressed the story by being set many years in the future.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Assist Trophy
Saki Amamiya: The series' lead character, appears as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When summoned, he will run and jump around, slashing at opponents with his saber, and firing energy blasts from his gun. Saki can also shoot from his gun while jumping, inwhich instance he would shoot at a pseudo-downward angle. However, Saki is liable to jump off of the side of the stage and self-destruct.
Trophy

He's killed by Ruffians, but the advance scout Achi resuscitates him, and he gains remarkable physical prowess and becomes the hunt leader. During a battle, he transforms into a Ruffian, and his companion Airan helps him recover. He's optimistic and copes well with danger.

Trophies
- Saki Amamiya
- The main character of Sin and Punishment, he is often mistaken for a girl because of his...interesting...hairstyle. Resurrected by the blood of Achi, he has gained superhuman powers. When summoned, he'll target the closest opponents and unleash his powerful gunsword.

- Sin and Punishment's hero is often mistaken for a girl due to his...well, his girly features. When he was revived by Achi's blood, he gained superhuman fighting skills. In this game, he'll slash and shoot at the nearest target with the Dolphin Gun, a gun/beam-sword hybrid.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Saki does not reprise his role as an Assist Trophy. However, he does appear in the game as a spirit in addition to his son, Isa Jo, as he appears in Sin & Punishment: Star Successor.
