| (This article is being made in an attempt to see if the important bits from each of the Phantom Thieves' articles can condensed while retaining most meaningful information. It may not be completed in its entirety, nor will some of the stuff in here comply with the MoS, but I am mainly working on refining the Description and appearances sections as much as possible. All assistance is welcomed!)

| |
| Ryuji is first introduced as a delinquent student at Shujin Academy, with a particular dislike for Suguru Kamoshida, the volleyball coach. Joker inquires Ryuji about Kamoshida, after which Ryuji quickly talks to and gets along with him. The two accidentally come across Kamoshida's Palace, a twisted, darker variation on the school where a shadow version of Kamoshida is the king. Ryuji, almost killed, is ultimately the catalyst behind the awakening of Arsene, Joker's Persona.
| |
|
| |
| It is eventually revealed that Kamoshida intentionally injured Ryuji's leg to inhibit his abilities in sports, as Ryuji was a hindrance to his plan to gain admiration school-wide. This upset Ryuji greatly, allowing his Persona, Captain Kidd, to be awakened. As a Phantom Thief, he takes on the codename Skull. In battle, Ryuji uses bludgeons and shotguns, and he specializes in single physical skills and thunder spells.

| |
| Ann is a second year student at Shujin Academy. She faces discrimination from the other students, due to being partly of American descent, with her only friend being Shiho Suzui, whom Ann knows is secretly being molested by the school volleyball coach Kamoshida. After she witnesses Suzui try to kill herself by jumping off the school roof, Ann follows Joker and Ryuji into Kamoshida's Palace. She is captured, but is able to awaken to her Persona, Carmen, which allows her to break free and get her revenge on Kamoshida. She later forms the Phantom Thieves of Hearts with Joker, Morgana and Ryuji Sakamoto in order to target the "corrupt adults" and steal their "corrupt hearts".
| |
|
| |
| Taking the codename Panther, Ann uses a whip and submachine gun in battle, while Carmen gives her access to a number of fire and single target healing spells, making her a valuable asset to the Thieves.

|
| |
| Yusuke is the pupil of acclaimed Japanese artist Ichiryusai Madarame. Yusuke is a passionate artist that began developing his craft at the age of three, at which point he had been orphaned and Madarame had taken him in. Madarame is secretly a conniving con man who extorts his pupils and plagiarizes their work. Yusuke reflexively denies this upon being confronted by the Phantom Thieves, but in truth he is a victim of Madarame's crimes who cannot accept the terrible nature of his caretaker.
| |
|
| |
| Upon entering Madarame's Palace with the Phantom Thieves, he discovers that Madarame never truly loved him, and a piece of Madarame's art that Yusuke admired had in fact been a self portrait painted by his own mother, whom Madarame had left to die so he could steal her work. Enraged, Yusuke awakens his Persona, Goemon. He then becomes a Phantom Thief with the codename Fox, and helps the group steal the Treasure of his now former mentor. He designs the logo depicted on all the calling cards the Phantom Thieves would send from then on.

Makoto struggles with extreme social and self-confidence issues, which are exacerbated after Kamoshida confesses to abusing his students. Many believed that Makoto chose to stay silent about Kamoshida's actions out of respect, however, Makoto felt powerless against the principal, who encouraged her not to speak about it. She is eventually ordered to track down the Phantom Thieves. She correctly deduces the Thieves' identities and threatens to reveal them to the principal, but makes a deal with Thieves: to keep their identities secret, they must change the heart of a mafia boss extorting Shujin students. She does not attend school and is extremely shy and depressed, though she becomes more playful and welcoming to the Phantom Thieves after getting familiar with them. | |
|
| |
| (Still reading up on the Persona wiki for this. I've written simplified backstories/summaries for the other characters, but since Goro only appears as a Spirit, he should have the absolute simplest summary/shortest backstory summary of the Thieves. That, and the fact that he seems to be a temporary member of the team in general.)
