Bad Things Happening to Good People was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online tournament held on September 4th, 2021 by WhyDo. The tournament was single-elimination and all best of one sets. True to its name, it featured an unconventional joke ruleset that took full advantage of Ultimate's infamously terrible online netcode, with no region locks, disqualifications for anyone who requested a lag test, and the option to gentleman to any game. The tournament prided itself as the first online Smash tournament with a vaccine mandate, maintained by the honor system. The Ultimate prize pool was $500 ($300 contributed by Panda), which entirely went to 1st place. A Rivals of Aether bracket is being held on September 5th, with a $300 prize pool contributed by the game's creator, Dan Fornace.
The winner of the tournament, Hungrybox, bribed his way through most of the bracket and only played 2 games. He ultimately won the tournament after accepting naitosharp's request for $300 and an appearance on Team Liquid's Hot Ones parody "Hot Juans."

Trivia
- This event was the largest best of one Smash tournament of all time, as well as the first tournament with over 1,000 entrants to have every entrant seeded entirely algorithmically without any human discretion (based on Smash.gg winrate).
