Kid Icarus (光神話 パルテナの鏡, Myth of Light: The Mirror of Palutena) is a platforming video game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the Famicom Disk System in 1986 and the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. It is the first game in the Kid Icarus series, the second being Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, released on the Game Boy. Another sequel for the SNES, Kid Icarus 2, was never released. The game world is loosely based on Greek mythology, with Icarus and Medusa being drawn from myth.
Kid Icarus has been re-released twice: on August 10, 2004, for the Game Boy Advance as part of the Famicom Mini Series in Japan only, and on February 12, 2007, on the Wii's Virtual Console in North America. It was released on the European and Australian Virtual Consoles on February 23, 2007.
The game appears as a playable Masterpiece in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It can be played for 90 seconds in Brawl and 180 seconds in Smash Wii U, and starts at the first level.
In the Super Smash Bros. series
Fighters
Pit (which appears as a playable character in both Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) and Palutena (which appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) both debuted in this game.
Moves
Pit's neutral, up and down specials in Brawl (Palutena's Arrow, Wings of Icarus and Mirror Shield) are based on the three sacred treasures from this game, the Arrow of Light, the Pegasus Wings and the Mirror Shield. Pit's Final Smash in Brawl, Palutena's Army, summons centurions to attack. They're abundantly found petrified in Fortresses. Bopping one with a Mallet sends it flying away, and it'll join Pit during the fight against that Fortress' Sacred Guardian. Pit's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. 4 is called "Three Sacred Treasures", and is based on the treasures mentioned above; more specifically, in their appearance in Kid Icarus: Uprising.
Stages
Skyworld is based on the location of the same name in this game. It is the third level. Palutena's Temple also comes from this game. It is where the goddess Palutena lives. In this game, Medusa usurped control of the palace and captured Palutena, prompting Pit to rescue her.
Enemies
Daphnes, Monoeyes, Reapers, and Zurees appear as Smash Run enemies in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. All of them debuted in this game. Daphnes are Underworld-affiliated enemies. They are depicted as once-docile flowers that were corrupted by a dark spirit, and group in four to attack. Monoeyes are large eyeball-shaped creatures with short tentacles who fly in formations of four and are only found in the Underworld. The Reaper is a durable foe that Pit encounters early in his quest. It appears in every non-Fortress area, barring the Palace in the Sky. The Reaper prowls along a flat path, turning around when the path ends. Once every few moments, however, it will suddenly glance behind to see if Pit's trying to sneak up behind it; it will always turn around if attacked in the back. Should the Reaper see Pit, it'll zip to the closest spot available on it's path and immediately summon four Reapettes. Zuree are encountered in the Palace in the Sky. They simply fly vertically, and are one of the weakest foes Pit will encounter.
Music
The songs "Underworld", "Skyworld", "Title (Kid Icarus)" and "Kid Icarus Original Medley" (known as "Kid Icarus Retro Medley in Smash 4) all come from this game. "Underworld" could be considered a medley of sorts, as while the majority of the track consists of an orchestral remix of the music that typically plays in World 1 of this game (officially known as Underworld), afterwards, a remix of the music that plays when Pit is in the range of the Grim Reaper enemy plays, and then the track ends on a remix of the Game Over Theme before looping again. "Skyworld" is an orchestral remix of the music that plays in the Overworld levels in this game, not the Skyworld as the song name suggests. "Title (Kid Icarus)" is a remix of the music that would play on the Title Screen of this game. "Kid Icarus Original/Retro Meldey" is a medley of music pieces from this game, retained in their original 8-bit format. The track starts with the Title Screen Theme, before transitioning into Underworld, the general Overworld Theme, Skyworld, Dungeon Theme, Stage Clear and Game Over. These segments are ported from the Famicom version of the game, rather than the NES version.

Pit | Fighter |
Pit is the captain of Palutena's royal guard. Despite the wings on his back, Pit needs the Power of Flight from Palutena in order to truly fly. In Smash Bros., he can still get more air than most, with four jumps and a special move that boosts him higher. He has a new reflect move—it protects both sides! Despite being an angel with wings and all that jazz, Pit can't fly without a little bit of help from his favourite goddess, Palutena. In this game, he's good at both close and ranged combat, and can even deflect projectiles. On top of that, with a high-flying up special and the ability to jump four times in mid-air. he's also got great recovery skills. |

Pit (Alt.) | Fighter |
Pit's side special Upperdash Arm delivers an uppercut so strong, it can send foes flying for a KO. If you miss and fall off the stage, Pit's up special can bring him soaring back. Another of Pit's specials is Palutena Bow, which fires arrows Pit can aim even after they've left the bow. Pit's Upperdash Arm special launches him forwards to strike with an uppercut. It's so powerful, it can deliver an instant KO! If you accidentally dash off the stage with it, one of his up special will get you back on easily. His Palutena Bow special can be charged up, shot straight up into the air, and you can even guide the arrows mid-flight! |

Palutena | Fighter |
In Kid Icarus: Uprising, the goddess of light uses telepathy to communicate and grants miracles to support Pit on his adventure. In Smash Bros., she has special moves like Warp and Heavenly Light at her disposal. She's very adaptable—you can customize her into a long- or close-range fighter! Said to be able to perform miracles, this goddess supports Pit in battle, using telepathy to communicate with him. She's no slouch on her own, either. She has a huge variety of moves you can customise and use to your advantage. Short or long range, the sky's the limit! Or maybe not. After all, she can teleport. |

Palutena (Alt.) | Fighter |
Palutena's Reflect Barrier side special deflects any attacks and projectiles that come at her from the front. Unlike other reflective moves, you can leave this barrier in place and it will keep reflecting. If you really want to ruin someone's day, you can push them over an edge using this move. Palutena's Reflect Barrier special deflects any attacks and projectiles that come at her from the front. Unlike other fighters' reflective moves, you can deploy this barrier and then leave it to its own devices. You can also push opponents with it, so use it on someone who's teetering on the edge of the stage to push them off. |

Since he's clearly not planning on doing any gardening, watch out for that scythe! You can tell when one of these has its sights set on you because the music will change and you'll hear a loud scream as it summons its Reapettes. If you always keep your distance and attack from afar, there's no need to fear the Reapers.
Since he's clearly not planning on doing any gardening, watch out for that scythe! He loved to scream and summon Reapettes in Kid Icarus: Uprising. In Smash Tour, you'll need to have at least three fighters when you encounter him to earn a Checkpoint Bonus. If you don't bring enough fighters, you'll get launched. Ouch! Since he's clearly not planning on doing any gardening, watch out for that scythe! Three Sacred Treasures | Fighter Related | ? G; — |
The powerful treasures used to defeat Medusa, the Three Sacred Treasures include the Arrow of Light, Wings of Pegasus, and Mirror Shield. That reminds me of a bit of trivia: there are in real life Three Sacred Treasures in Japan, but they are a sword, a mirror, and a jewel. These treasures, once used to defeat Medusa, are the Arrow of Light, the Wings of Pegasus and the Mirror Shield. And now for some trivia: the Imperial Regalia of Japan are also known as the Three Sacred Treasures, but those three are a sword, a mirror and a jewel.
Monoeye | Enemy | ? G; — |
These one-eyed monsters are members of the Underworld Army from the Kid Icarus series. In Smash Run, these scouts will usually attack alone and chase fighters. If their eye starts to glow red, they're preparing to fire a projectile. They're really weak, though, so you should have no trouble. These one-eyed creatures from the Kid Icarus series are the Underworld Army's surveillance drones. In Smash Run, they tend to waver about as they chase after you. When their eyes glow red, it means they're about to fire energy blasts at you, so watch out! Other than that, though, they're not particularly tough.
Daphne | Enemy | ? G; — |
These flowery foes from the Kid Icarus series may look adorable, but they'll reveal their repulsive faces and scatter mines everywhere if given the chance. The mines have an impressive blast radius and knock-back. Best to blow them up from a distance. Daphnes themselves have very little health. Adorable as these flowery foes from the Kid Icarus series look, they're actually nasty little things. They're not tough to beat, but apparently they're holding too many mines to even have anything useful to give you when you do beat them. Watch out for those mines - they have a pretty big blast radius and can really send you flying.
Zuree | Enemy | ? G; — |
The Zuree usually live in the Underworld, but in Kid Icarus, Medusa set them to work guarding the Palace in the Sky. In Smash Bros., they appear as a silvery mist, waiting until they've floated close enough to a fighter before showing themselves and attacking with their sharp claws. That's your cue to fight back! The Zuree usually live in the Underworld, but in Kid Icarus, Medusa set them to work guarding the Palace in the Sky. In this game, they appear as a silvery mist, waiting until they've floated close enough to a fighter before showing their true form and attacking with their sharp claws. And that's your cue to fight back!
Medusa, Queen of the Underworld Medusa |
Series Related | ? G; — |
Medusa is the goddess of darkness and the leader of the Underworld Army. Although she was defeated in the past, Hades has secretly resurrected her to fight again. Those slithering snakes on her head are really unpleasant. That's got to be the worst bad hair day ever. Medusa is the goddess of darkness and leader of the Underworld Army. She was defeated by Pit in the past, but the fires of her hatred never faded. With Hades' help, she came back to life and got straight back on the warpath. Even the poisonous snakes on her head writhe with loathing for Palutena.
Twinbellows the Ferocious Twinbellows |
Series Related | ? G; — |
Twinbellows is a flame-engulfed, demonic, doglike beast unleashed by Medusa during her attack on a human city. Its roar heralds a crimson fire that consumes everything in its path. If you hear both heads roaring, prepare yourself—this beast is definitely drawing near. Unleashed by Medusa during an assault on a human city, the Underworld's fiery guard dog is a fearsome creature. People associate the sound of its roar with the sight of cities being burned to the ground. If you hear two roars at the same time, stay on your toes - it might be nearby.
Three-Headed Hewdraw Hewdraw |
Series Related | ? G; — |
A dragon with three regenerating heads. Each head has its own unique personality, and they are not known for getting along. One head would want to destroy a wall, the second would go around it, and the third would fly over it. All three are plenty happy to devour a meddling angel, though. This dragon's three heads don't even need to be attached to the body to wreak havoc, which is a good thing because they don't really get along with each other anyway! Their constant bickering makes them a funny bunch to be around...until they take a break to deal with Pit, that is!
Thanatos, God of Death Thanatos |
Series Related | ? G; — |
Don't be fooled by Thanatos's childish attitude—he's more dangerous than most clowns. And don't expect smiles from the god of death. He serves as Medusa's second in command and, thanks to his shape-shifting talents, can entertain his master with a decent clown act too. Thanatos might look like he's just a goofy clown, but he's not - he's the god of death, one of the key players in the Underworld Army and Medusa's right-hand man. His shape-shifting abilities play a big part in his clown act, which his master gets a good cackle out of.
Mik | Series Related | ? G; — |
It's easy to sum up a Mik—it's a large- mouthed monster. It serves as one of the Underworld Army's frontline troops, but maybe it would make a better food tester? Miks will eat just about anything, you know, and angels are right at the top of the menu. These slurpy little creatures are part of the Underworld Army's front-line troops. From the look of them, though, they'd probably make better food tasters. (Is that insensitive...?) Either way, they really do eat a lot, so don't agree to go for dinner with them unless they offer to pay!
Specknose | Series Related | ? G; — |
Let's get one thing straight here—those are tentacles, not hair, hanging under that oversized nose. Specknoses may look goofy, but you should be wary of the dangerous projectiles they can shoot from their nostrils. Ew! I hope those are just regular bombs... Looks like someone could do with trimming the old moustache, right? Hold on a sec! Those aren't hairs - they're tentacles! Gross! These guys start off slow, but when they spot their prey, they jump into action and start sneezing bombs - bombs made INSIDE their noses. Ew!
Centurions | Series Related | ? G; — |
The standard soldiers of Palutena's Army, Centurions make up in loyalty and number for what they lack in power. They have time and again fallen victim to a curse that turns them to stone, but the head of Palutena's guard, Pit, saves them with the use of a stone-breaking mallet. These little guys are Palutena's soldiers. What they lack in strength, they more than make up for with dedication. A long time ago, they were turned into stone and scattered across the world. Luckily, Pit managed to free them with his Mallet, making them even more loyal to our hero!
Pit (Eggplant) | Series Related | ? G; — |
Let's squash a misconception right now— there is nothing worse than being turned into an eggplant. Just lettuce tell you, being hit by an eggplant bomb is humiliating. It leafs you without mushroom to maneuver and also makes you the laughing stalk of your friends. Maybe you think there's something worse than being turned into an eggplant, but we're going to squash that misconception right now. Lettuce tell you, being hit by an eggplant bomb is awful. Not only does it leave you without mushroom to manoeuvre, but it makes you a giant laughing stalk as well. (We're not sorry.) |
