NOTE: Every claimed source needs a cross-reference link; claimed sources need to be plausible, not awfully obscure; default costumes usually don't need descriptions since they are not alternate costumes; returning costumes original to Smash do not need references to their appearances in previous Smash games.

Mario and Greninja with alternate costumes

Each character in Super Smash Bros. 4 has a set of alternate costumes. Due to the presence of 8-Player Smash, all characters now have eight costumes (except for Little Mac, who has 16). Some costumes have slight visual differences between the 3DS and Wii U versions.

Some characters possess certain alternate costumes with more drastic design differences, and are not merely recolors of their standard outfits. Wario, Zero Suit Samus, Little Mac, Shulk, Cloud and Bayonetta have different outfits available; Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Robin and Corrin all have male and female variants; Olimar and Bowser Jr. have model swaps that change them into new characters, complete with corresponding voice and Announcer clips, though like all other alternate costumes, they bear no gameplay differences.

Team Battles no longer confine characters to using their respective team color schemes, as teams are now indicated by colored outlines around the characters, giving players the freedom to pick whichever alternate costume they want to use in Team Battles.

On the Find Mii stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, the Dark Emperor uses magic that affects all players of the same color. Each alternate costume is allocated to one of the twelve Mii colors: black, brown, red, orange, yellow, light green, green, light blue, blue, purple, pink, and white. These colors are noted in the below lists as a bar underneath the corresponding portrait; as several characters have multiple costumes that share this color, the main color names as used on this page do not conform to this system.

Bayonetta

Half of Bayonetta's costumes are based on her design from Bayonetta 2, while the other half are based on her design from Bayonetta. For the former half, she wields Love is Blue, which has blue attack trails. For the latter half, she wields Scarborough Fair, which has red attack trails, and speaks English even in the Japanese version.

Black	Based on her appearance in Bayonetta 2.
Yellow	Resembles her yellow alternate costume from Anarchy Reigns, which itself is a reference to the outfit Bruce Lee wears in Game of Death.
Red	Based on Jeanne, Bayonetta's friendly rival.^[1] The hair visible in her Wicked Weaves and on Gomorrah is also colored white.
White	Resembles the platinum and pure platinum trophies in Bayonetta 2, which depict her in a silvery color scheme.
Original	Based on her appearance in Bayonetta.
Green	Resembles her green alternate color in Anarchy Reigns.
Pink	Resembles her time-displaced, younger self whom she watches over in Bayonetta.
Blue	Resembles her blue alternate color in Anarchy Reigns.

Bowser

Giga Bowser is always treated as yellow in Find Mii.

Default	Based on his modern design first seen in Super Mario Sunchine.
Black	Combines elements of his black and brown costumes from Brawl.
Yellow	Resembles Ludwig Von Koopa's appearance and Lemmy Koopa's appearance in Super Mario World.
Green	Resembles one of his alternate colors in Mario Golf and his in-game sprite from Super Mario World.
Grey	Resembles Morton's in-game sprite from Super Mario Bros. 3 and in-game sprite from Super Mario World.
Orange	Resembles Giga Bowser from Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Red	Resembles one of his alternate colors in Mario Golf.
Blue	Based on Blue Bowser's in-game sprite in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.^[2] It also resembles one of his alternate colors from Mario Golf.

Bowser Jr.

Bowser Jr.'s alternate costumes replace him with each of the seven Koopalings. Bowser Jr. rides the Junior Clown Car^[3] which was introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, whereas the Koopalings ride in a mass-produced Koopa Clown Car^[4] with a design unique to the Super Smash Bros..

Captain Falcon

Indigo
Black	Based on his appearance in the Japanese commercial for F-Zero X.^[5]
Red	Based on Blood Falcon, Captain Falcon's clone and rival.^[5] The logo on his back changes to a skull with "Blood Hawk" (the name of Blood Falcon's vehicle) written underneath.
Green	Reminiscent of Wild Goose's color scheme.
Blue	Resembles his appearance in the original F-Zero and his appearance in F-Zero: GP Legend.
White	Resembles Jody Summer's original design in F-Zero X.
Yellow	Possibly based on Dr. Stewart and the Golden Fox's color scheme.
Cyan	Reminiscent of Rick Wheeler from the anime F-Zero: GP Legend.

Charizard

Orange	Based on its modern design first seen in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
Red	Resembles the Pokémon Charmeleon, the pre-evolved form of Charizard.
Green

Yellow	Resembles the Shiny colorations of Charmander and Charmeleon, the other members of Charizard's evolutionary family.
White	Resembles the Pokémon Aerodactyl.
Blue	Resembles the Pokémon Zubat and its evolved form Golbat.
Purple	Resembles its original Shiny coloration from Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal.

Cloud

Half of Cloud's costumes are based on his appearance in Final Fantasy VII, while the other half are based on his "Cloudy Wolf" design from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.^[6] In two of his Advent Childen costumes, his Geostigma-infected arm is covered by a sleeve, while it is exposed in the other two, revealing the red ribbon he wrapped around it in memory of Aerith Gainsborough. His costumes with the exposed arm are based on his appearance in Advent Children after his fight with Bahamut SIN, during which his sleeve is torn off.

He wields the Buster Sword in the former outfits and the Fusion Swords in the latter outfits.

Corrin

Half of Corrin's costumes are male, while the other half are female.

Red	Resembles Saizo, the elder twin of their retainer Kaze from Fates and the overworld sprites of enemy units in the Fire Emblem games.

Pink	Resembles the overworld sprites of Valla-aligned units from Fates as well as the flames emitted by Omega Yato.

Dark Pit

Black	Based on his appearance in Kid Icarus: Uprising, which itself was based on Pit's "fallen angel" costume from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Green	Resembles the color scheme of a Mik.
Brown	Resembles Magnus from Kid Icarus: Uprising.
Yellow	Complimentary to Pit's yellow costume.
Red	Resembles the color scheme of a Monoeye and Twinbellows.
Blue	Resembles the color scheme of a Shemum.
White	Resembles Pit. Dark Pit retains his black wings and gains a red scarf, likely to better differentiate the two. It is complementary to Pit's "fallen angel" costume.
Purple	Bears a slight resemblance to the Eggplant Wizard enemies from the Kid Icarus games.

Diddy Kong

Red	Wears cap with the "Nintendo" logo and starred tank top first seen in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.
White	His vest is reminiscent of his alternate outfit in Donkey Kong Country's Two-Player Contest mode.
Pink	Resembles Dixie Kong, Diddy Kong's girlfriend.
Purple	Resembles his appearance in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest's Two-Player Contest mode.

Blue	Resembles one of his alternate costumes from Donkey Kong 64's Multiplayer Mode. It also resembles one of his alternate colors from Mario Golf.
Green	Resembles one of his alternate colors in DK: King of Swing's Jungle Jam mode.
White	Referred to as "Yeti DK" on the Brawl DOJO!!^[7] Resembles the mythical yeti. It also resembles the Fire Mini Donkey Kongs from Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and Eddie the Mean Old Yeti from the Donkey Kong Country TV series.
Yellow	Resembles one of his alternate colors in DK: King of Swing's Jungle Jam mode.
Pink	Fur color resembles Junior (II) from Donkey Kong Jr. Math.

Dr. Mario

White	Resembles his appearance in Dr. Mario 64, but with black jeans instead of white trousers.
Red	Resembles the scrubs worn by modern-day nurses.
Blue	Resembles the scrubs worn by modern-day general medical practitioners.
Green	Resembles the scrubs worn by modern-day surgeons.
Black	Referred to as the "Unlicensed Doctor" on the Melee website.^[8] Also invokes the coats worn by earlier doctors before the shift to white coats.
Yellow
Purple	Slightly resembles a Shellcreeper after being hit and returning to its shell in Mario Bros..
Pink	Resembles the color of the scrubs worn by Nurse Toadstool.

Duck Hunt

Duck Hunt's alternate costumes change the dog and/or the duck's colors to resemble real variants of the respective animals.

Default	The duck is one of the three possible ducks from Duck Hunt.
Black	The dog somewhat resembles a Bernese Mountain Dog. The duck resembles a male Saxony duck.
Blue	The dog has the bicolor coat pattern of a Border Collie. The duck resembles an American black duck.
Brown	The duck resembles a female Orpington duck.
White	The dog resembles a Dalmatian. The duck resembles a ruddy shelduck, an orange species with green wings.
Tan	The dog resembles a Beagle. The duck resembles a male blue-headed mallard, an uncommon variant.
Yellow	The duck is one of the three possible ducks that appear in Duck Hunt. It resembles a male mallard.
Red	The dog resembles a black Labrador Retriever. The duck is one of the three possible ducks from Duck Hunt. Collectively, the costume bears a resemblance to Banjo and Kazooie.

Falco

Default	Based on his appearance in Star Fox Command.
Orange	Reminiscent of his appearance in Star Fox 64 and Star Fox 64 3D, but with the orange of his pants also applied to his jacket.
Blue
Red	Resembles his appearance in Star Fox: Assault.
Green
Black	Complementary to Fox's "Dark Fox" costume. Reminiscent of a black pheasant or raven.

Jigglypuff

Unlike previous games, none of Jigglypuff's alternate costumes change it to its Shiny coloration.

Red	Taken over from its red alternate costume from Super Smash Bros. Melee.
White	Its hat is reminiscent of the female protagonist of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
Blue	Resembles one of the possible colors for a nicknamed Jigglypuff in Pokémon Stadium. Its hat is reminiscent of the Bug Catcher Trainer class.
Green	Resembles one of the possible colors for a nicknamed Jigglypuff in Pokémon Stadium. Its cap is reminiscent of Kirby with the Sleep Copy Ability.
Pink	Taken over from its alternate costumes from the original Super Smash Bros. It has been revived since Melee.
Nurse	Its hat is reminiscent of the Pokémon Center Nurse from Pokémon X and Y.
Glasses	Its cap and glasses respectively are reminiscent of Serena's Red Felt Hat and White Wide-Frame Glasses from X and Y.

King Dedede

The color of his hammer does not change between costumes.

Red	Based on his modern design first seen in Kirby's Avalanche with a more detailed tunic.
Pink	Resembles one of his alternate colors in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards' Multiplayer mode.
Green	Resembles one of his alternate costumes in Kirby Air Ride. The obi features embroidered Waddle Dees, using their appearance from Kirby Super Star Ultra.
Purple	Resembles one of his alternate costumes in Kirby Air Ride. The obi is reminiscent of formal Japanese kimonos, and combined with the overall color scheme, somewhat resembles Queen Sectonia from Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
Cyan	The obi features the same icons as one of the menu schemes from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
Grey	Resembles his appearance on the monochromatic Game Boy screen in Kirby's Dream Land.
Blue	Resembles one of his alternate colors in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards' Multiplayer mode.

Kirby

Blue	Based on Ice Kirby in Kirby Super Star.^[5] It also resembles Blue Kirby from various Kirby titles.
Red	Based on Fire Kirby in Kirby Super Star.^[5] It also resembles Red Kirby from various Kirby titles.
Green	Resembles Green Kirby from various Kirby titles and Plasma Kirby in Kirby Super Star Ultra.
White	Based on his monochromatic in-game sprite from Kirby's Dream Land.^[10]
Orange	Resembles his appearance after using Orange Spray Paint in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad. It also resembles Crash Kirby and Fireball Kirby's appearances in artwork for Kirby's Adventure.
Purple	Resembles Meta Knight unmasked, though with yellow eyes instead of white. This design would become the basis for Meta Knight's unmasked appearance in later Kirby games. Its colors are brighter in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Little Mac

Little Mac is the only character with 16 different costumes, having a wireframe variant of each of his eight standard costumes. The wireframe variants are based on the player's appearance in the original arcade Punch-Out!!^[13] His wireframe palette swaps have slightly brighter cel-shaded colors than their non-wireframe counterparts.

Giga Mac is always treated as green in Find Mii.

Navy	Resembles Tharja. The back of her cape features the Brand of the Fell Dragon, a prominent symbol in Tharja's home country.

Luigi

Green	Based on his modern design first seen in Mario Party 4.
Orange	Resembles Mario's appearance on the North American boxart for Pinball, but with an orange cap.
Pink	The original Super Smash Bros. website referred to this costume as "Strawberry Luigi".^[5] It resembles his appearance in Wrecking Crew.
Cyan	Resembles Mario's appearance on the North American boxart for Mario Bros.
White	Resembles Fire Luigi.
Purple	Resembles Waluigi, although the "L" on his cap is purple instead of yellow. This was not the case in Brawl.
Blue	Resembles Mario's appearance on the Game & Watch boxart for Donkey Kong Jr.

Blue	Reminiscent of his appearance on the Japanese and European covers of the NES version of Mario Bros..
Yellow	Based on Wario's classic design,^[5] although the "M" on his cap is green instead of blue. This was not the case in previous Smash titles.
Black	Originally, it was based on Foreman Spike from Wrecking Crew. However, the colors of his cap and overalls were changed to be more blue than red, resulting in a complete loss of similarity to Foreman Spike.
Green	Reminiscent of the colors of his outfit on the Japanese boxart for Wrecking Crew, but with the overalls being more brown. It also resembles Luigi's appearance from promotional artwork for the arcade version of Mario Bros., with the colors of the overalls and shirt swapped. Finally, it bears a passing resemblance to Jinbe from Mole Mania, another game developed by Shigeru Miyamoto.
Striped	Based on his appearance from Family Computer Golf: U.S. Course and NES Open Tournament Golf.^[15]
Purple	Resembles Waluigi. It also resembles Mario's appearance with the L and W Emblems equipped in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Marth

Navy	Based on his appearance as a Lord in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow.^[16]^[17] The Falchion retains its design from Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem.

Black
White	Originally, it was based on Leif, the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.^[18] However, the color scheme was changed to be more monochrome compared to Melee and Brawl, resulting in less similarity to Leif.
Blue	Resembles his appearance in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem.
Yellow	Complimentary to Roy's yellow costume.
Purple	Resembles Roy's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Mega Man

Blue	Based on his appearance in Mega Man.
Red	Resembles his appearance when using Items 1, 2, and 3 in Mega Man 2, the various Rush Summons and Rush Adaptors from Mega Man 4 to Mega Man 6, and the Optic Laser in Street Fighter X Mega Man.
Green	Resembles his appearance when using Hyper Bomb in the original Mega Man, Leaf Shield in Mega Man 2, Search Snake in Mega Man 3, Gyro Attack in Mega Man 5, Centaur Flash in Mega Man 6, and Tornado Blow in Mega Man 9.
Brown	Resembles his appearance when using Metal Blade in Mega Man 2. Similar colors are seen when using Ring Boomerang in Mega Man 4, and in the official artwork of Silver Tomahawk in Mega Man 6, though the latter's in-game appearance is notably different.
Cyan	Resembles his appearance when using Gemini Laser in Mega Man 3. Grey	Based on the Western version of R.O.B. released for the NES. The text on his base reads "R.O.B. - Robotic Operating Buddy" instead of "Family Computer Robot".
