Trivia

  • Out of the first four installments in the series (up to Super Smash Bros. 4; 4 if both versions of Smash 4 are counted as one game and not separately), Super Smash Bros. Melee is the only installment where there are placeholders for unlockable stages. Despite there being 5 "?" marked boxes for unlockable stages, there are 11 unlockables in Melee. However only the Melee stages (which are unlockables) in Melee (new stages; but only new to Melee) appear as placeholder slots (question marks). The placeholder slots for unlockable stages were absent in the original Super Smash Bros. (on Smash 64's stage selection screen). In Melee however, Past Stages and Super Smash Bros. universe stages did not have placeholder slots prior to unlocking. With the exception of Flat Zone, just the said game's new stages (Melee stages) that were unlockables appeared as question marks (making Melee the only game to have unlockable stages as placeholders when not yet unlocked). In Brawl and Smash 4 (not Ultimate; as all of Ultimate's non DLC stages are starter stages and there are no unlockables), the placeholder slots (for unlockable stages) were completely removed (both Brawl and Smash 4).
  • Up to Smash 4 (not Ultimate as all non DLC stages are available from the start), the Wii U version of Smash 4 is the only installment where playing VS. Mode matches does not unlock an unlockable stage. All unlockable stages have an unlock criterion which require no VS. Mode matches to unlock them.
