Locus is an SSB4 Ryu player originally from Weyburn, Saskatchewan, who is currently residing in Vancouver, British Columbia, and is considered one of the best Ryu players in the world along with Darkshad. Locus is currently ranked 2nd on the British Columbia Smash 4 Power Rankings and 22nd on the Panda Global Rankings v3. He has taken sets off of top players such as Ally, Nairo, Larry Lurr, Abadango, Mr.R, Tweek, Samsora, and MVD.

On March 27th, 2017, Justin Simpao, manager for Locus, announced his status as a free agent.[1] He was then signed by Circa eSports on December 15th, 2017.[2]

Tournament history

From Saskatchewan to British Columbia

Locus entered the competitive scene in 2015, quickly dominating his home region, Saskatchewan. Following his transition to British Columbia to attend the University of British Columbia, he began as an honourable mention on the British Columbia Power Rankings for the Fall 2015 period.

While still only an honourable mention for the Winter 2015 period, Locus would be ranked 5th at the end of Spring 2016. Following a hiatus in the BC scene, and a return to dominance in Saskatchewan, Locus returned with the start of the new semester, and was ranked 3rd for both the Summer and Fall 2016 periods. He attended his first major, EVO 2016, placing 65th.

2GGT: ZeRo Saga and further success

At 2GGT: ZeRo Saga, Locus emerged as a major tournament threat, upsetting 9B, Tweek, and Mr.R, placing 9th. He began 2017 ranked 45th on the Panda Global Rankings v2.

At GENESIS 4, he placed 25th, losing to Ally and Fatality. His notable performance was in the MexiCanEU VS Japan Crew Battle, taking 7 stocks, from Ranai, 9B, and You3. The transition to a new year would be signified by his much improved in-region performance, and he and Captain L became notable competitors in the BC Doubles scene. At 2GGC: Midwest Mayhem Saga, Locus placed 17th.

Becoming the best Ryu

At 2GGC: Civil War, he placed 7th, taking sets off of Ally, Samsora, Shuton, and Nairo, at the most stacked SSB4 tournament of all time. Following his impressive performance and Trela's retirement, Locus is now considered the best Ryu player in the world.

With a flight secured from placing 3rd at an online qualifier, Locus travelled to compete at Midwest Mayhem 8: North American Tour, placing 5th. He defeated Rich Brown to advance to Top 8, before falling to Ally and ZeRo. In Doubles, he and Samsora placed 2nd, being double eliminated by ZeRo and Ally.

UBC | OneHand

Locus is famed for his alter-ego: UBC | OneHand, a Captain Falcon player with only one hand. Originally a handicap to challenge himself when he lacked competitive practice partners, UBC | OneHand made its debut in a money match against top Saskatchewan player, Qwexe, where OneHand took the match solidly. Since then, OneHand has improved, establishing a reputation for its performance in friendlies and money matches. As OneHand, he has taken sets off of players such as Blanc, FoCus, and Exodia.

Trivia

  • An inside joke has arisen among the BC Smash community that Locus is actually FoCus's brother, a joke extended by the fact that both their tags and first names are differentiated by only one letter.
  • Ryu's u-air, u-air, Shoryuken combo has been dubbed "The Locus" after his usage of it against Mr. R at 2GGT: ZeRo Saga.
  • Locus is well-known for having a positive competitive mentality and can often be seen visibly excited during his matches.
