To commemorate the release of Super Smash Bros. 4, and the Super Smash Bros. series as a whole, Nintendo hosted an invitational tournament during E3 2014, at the NOKIA Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
The game played was Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. 16 "highly skilled" players were invited to participate. The tournament had 3,000 in-person spectators with costumed fans receiving priority seating,[1] and there event was streamed live with commentators.
A video contest was held, the winner of which would be awarded a VIP trip to the event and have the opportunity to play one of the tournament winners. The winner was revealed to be justinanthonylennox.
The host of the event was Geoff Keighley.[2]

Rules
The following rules were in effect:[5]
- Before the tournament begins, the players will choose characters in random order. Characters may not be chosen by multiple players, and players cannot switch characters at any time.
- Each match will have 4 players. Matches will have 4 stock with a 5-minute timer. The top 2 players in terms of score advance; if there is a tie between 2 and 3, the number of KOs is the tiebreaker, and a further tie is broken by fan vote.
- The final match will take place on Battlefield, and have a timer of 8 minutes, as an explicit homage to the competitive Smash community.
- Items will be on medium for round 1, low for rounds 2 and 3, and off for the final.
- Stages are to be revealed at the tournament.

The winner of the Invitational Tournament was Gonzalo "ZeRo" Barrios who played as Zero Suit Samus. His trophy was presented by Reggie Fils-Amie, president of Nintendo of America.

- Keegan Allen, star of the television show Pretty Little Liars. Used Bowser.
- Zelda Williams, daughter of comedian Robin Williams and named after Princess Zelda. Used Greninja.
- Erin Sanders, star of the television show Zoey 101 and recurring actress in The Young and Restless. Used Kirby.
- Stephen Lunsford, star of Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight and recurring actor on Teen Wolf. Used Link.
Keegan Allen ultimately won the match.
