December 2, 2013 | Pic of the day. Turnips are used in the Villager's up-air and down-air attacks. Perhaps because the turnip prices fluctuate depending on the day's market, the number of turnips that appear changes every time. How cute. | It is unknown if the amount of turnips spawned in the Villager's attacks have a functional difference on the attack beyond aesthetics.
December 3, 2013 | Pic of the day. Pop quiz! Who is this monster, and where is it from? The cage may serve as a hint. | Confirms a Find Mii stage, as well as the appearance of the Dark Emperor as a stage element on it, though his role and effect within the stage is not known.

December 5, 2013 | Pic of the day. The Villager's special attack, the Lloid Rocket, is a projectile weapon like no other--you can either launch it or ride on it. When you fire it off, keep pressing the button to hop aboard--you can even control its speed. It's more powerful when you're riding it. | Confirms the prior seen Gyroid as one of Villager's special moves.
December 6, 2013 | Pic of the day. Here's a new Assist Trophy--the Skull Kid! I repeat, it's an Assist Trophy, not a new fighter. The characters announced on the website are the fighters! | Confirms the Skull Kid wearing Majora's Mask from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask as an Assist Trophy. This is the first reveal of an Assist Trophy character, and by extension, confirms the return of the Assist Trophy item. The Skull Kid's function was not stated nor hinted at, though it's heavily speculated it'll have something to do with the Moon from Majora's Mask. Sakurai additionally assures that playable characters will always have a corresponding page on the official website when revealed, unlike nonplayable characters like Assist Trophies.
December 9, 2013 | Pic of the day. Q: "Is this a Steel Diver?" A: "Yes, indeed, that is a Steel Diver." The sub from Steel Diver is now a cute projectile weapon--it launches torpedoes that fly slowly at first. | Confirms a new shooting item, the Steel Driver.
December 10, 2013 | Pic of the day. There weren't a lot of people who used the Shield Breaker to break people's shields, so we've now made it much more powerful. This pic is from immediately after a shield break. | Confirms Shield Breaker will receive some sort of power buff due to its relative lack of use in Brawl, though it's unclear if it's a standard damage/knockback increase, even greater shield damage, or both.
December 11, 2013 | Pic of the day. Yar, I wants to watch some o' that Smash action, too, ye great beast! | Confirms a new Animal Crossing stage for the 3DS version, based on Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Information about the stage beyond the single snapshot was not given.

It additionally confirms that that it will be a different breed of dog this time around, and that its function will remain the same.

December 17, 2013 | Pic of the day. In the train stage, the rear car can change during battle. It'll detach and move backward, so be careful! This pic features the Linebeck Trading Company, which is being transported for some reason. | Confirms that caboose of the Spirit Train will detach and drift offstage, similar to how the cars in Big Blue would drift offstage throughout the progress of the match.

It was replaced after the Nintendo Direct with the below image.
December 18, 2013 | Without further ado, a new fighter from a faraway galaxy joins the battle! The video is also a must-see! | Posted midday after the Nintendo Direct. Rosalina's trailer was posted on Miiverse, but the new picture of the day (left) was only shown on the official site.
For more details, check out the official website at www.smashbros.com.
December 19, 2013 | Pic of the day. Rosalina and Luma can be right by each other or set farther apart. They're both controlled by the player, so a smash attack can be done from far off. Remote control all the way! | Confirms that Luma can be controlled away from Rosalina, unlike Pikmin.
December 20, 2013 | Pic of the day. A Luma becomes a star. Lumas are tough, but can also be blown away. Luckily, there's an infinite number of them. | Confirms that Luma can be attacked and KO'd like other characters, and that Rosalina can respawn an infinite number of them.
December 23, 2013 | Pic of the day. Rosalina's got height! She is seriously tall! However, she boasts an anti-gravity effect, so she's very light. | Confirms that Rosalina will be a very tall, but very light character, akin to Zelda and Mewtwo, presumably to help balance out the fact Lumas will make Rosalina a more difficult character to approach and hit.
December 24, 2013 | Pic of the day. Happy Holidays! Here's a new 3DS stage--Rainbow Road! It can't be explained in one picture, but it's going to be a cruise-type stage. | Confirms a new Mario Kart stage for the 3DS version based off of the recurring Rainbow Road course. It is additionally confirmed it'll be cruise-type stage like Mute City.

It's great to see so many female characters this time around. | Confirms Zelda's return as a playable character, and unlike most other returning characters, she retains the same aesthetic design style that she had in Brawl. Sakurai also specifically remarks about the notable increase in the amount of female characters, seemingly confirming that there was a push to get more female characters as fans expected.

FYI, she's an Assist Trophy.
January 16, 2014 | Pic of the day. A group shot of the big guys. How much bigger are they compared to Mario? | When compared to an equivalent Brawl image, this confirms the difference between bigger and smaller characters will be more drastic.
January 17, 2014 | Pic of the day. Don't miss your chance, Zelda--King Dedede is knocked out. | —
Zelda: "Ah--soft and squishy."
January 20, 2014 | Pic of the day. Where am I……?? To be clear, the new Super Smash Bros. games do not feature a story mode like The Subspace Emissary. |
While the exact identification of this stage remains unknown, Sakurai's commentary caused people to speculate that it's supposed to be a stage in a new single-player mode.
January 21, 2014 | Pic of the day. This is the Luma Shot, which highlights the different ways to control your Luma. You can switch between controlling the Luma alongside Rosalina or away from her. | —
Today is the 15th Anniversary of the launch of the first Super Smash Bros. There may be some players out there who played it on the Nintendo 64 as kids that have grown into adults.
January 22, 2014 | Pic of the day. There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario's grab. | This confirms the first major gameplay change, with the ledge's mechanics being majorly altered for the first time in the series. While a way to steal the ledge from edge hoggers has been alluded to, no information about how it works has been given.
Some other changes include: -Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge. -Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.
January 23, 2014 | Pic of the day. This is definitely not a friendly girls night out… | Confirms Viridi as a stage element, though what she does on the stage has not been stated nor hinted at. Note this image was released on the day after the Palutena "leak" was first revealed online.

January 27, 2014 | Pic of the day. Rosalina's down special move, tentatively called the Gravitational Pull, sucks up items and weapons. Weapons will be disabled when using this move, of course. You have to shake the Wii Remote to perform this move in Super Mario Galaxy, but you won't need to do that in this game. | Besides giving some information on a move seen in Rosalina's trailer, Sakurai indirectly confirms motion controls will not be utilised in the game.
January 28, 2014 | Pic of the day. The Beetle item from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a comical item that grabs characters and carries them into the air. | Confirms a new item, the Beetle, that can be seemingly thrown at opponents, which will pick them up and fly them into the air. Sakurai did not state how how far and for how long Beetles will fly with picked up characters.
January 29, 2014 | Pic of the day. You can find this statue of the Goddess of Light in one of the stages. She's watching over the arena. | Confirms a new Kid Icarus stage for the Wii U version, though details beyond a snapshot is not given. This coming out shortly after a rumored "leak" of Palutena, with Sakurai's commentary, has led observes to speculate Sakurai is aware of the Palutena images and is acknowledging them with this.
January 30, 2014 | Pic of the day. Both Link and Pit use bows, but when they fire simultaneously, their arrows meet and cancel out closer to Pit. Besides attack power and projectile speed, there are many elements that affect tactics, such as accuracy, vulnerability after attacking, and even seemingly unrelated features like a character's physical abilities. | Yet another Kid Icarus related image released a short time after the Palutena "leak" had first been revealed.
January 31, 2014 | Pic of the day. The heroic Aura Pokémon, Lucario, joins the battle!! We've increased the influence of Aura this time, so a damaged Lucario is truly a force to be reckoned with. | Along with confirming Lucario's return, it's confirmed his Aura effects will be buffed, though in what way is not confirmed.
Lucario joined the battle for the first time in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was released six years ago. The production staff of Brawl worked really hard to expand the character roster--without their efforts, Lucario probably never would have joined the battle. |

February 3, 2014 | Pic of the day. A size comparison of Lucario's standard special attack, Aura Sphere, in its weakest and strongest states. The attack is faster and more powerful when the Aura Sphere is bigger. | Confirms Aura Sphere will be able to achieve larger sizes than it did in Brawl.
February 4, 2014 | Pic of the day. When Lucario shoots out Aura from its hands to fly with ExtremeSpeed, you can control its flight direction. If Lucario's Aura is fully charged, it can fly extremely far, so be careful not to accidentally launch out of the area. | Confirms that ExtremeSpeed's distance is now determined by Aura, with it gaining drastically more distance at high damages. Sakurai did not state how its distance will be at low damages however. ExtremeSpeed is also shown to now generate visible aura streams out of Lucario's hands, though Sakurai did not state if this is indicative of gained hitboxes.
February 5, 2014 | Pic of the day. Palkia appeared in the Spear Pillar stage of the previous game…but now it's coming out of a Poké Ball?! Here's Palkia's signature move, Spacial Rend! | Confirms Palkia will be spawnable from a Poké Ball, instead of being a stage element. Its move is stated to be Spacial Rend, though how the move will actually function in the game has not been stated nor hinted to. This also seemingly disconfirms the return of the Spear Pillar stage.
February 6, 2014 | Pic of the day. It is said that the cosmos is beneath Rosalina's gown. This was actually featured briefly in her debut video. | An image showing off the unique attack trails of Rosalina's galaxy-based attacks.

It is additionally shown attacking with its trademark laser attack.

February 11, 2014 | Pic of the day. You missed me, because you attacked my illusory copy from my Double Team move! | This image shows off a new aesthetic effect of Double Team, where Lucario's eyes glow upon successful activation. No functional gameplay differences are mentioned though.
February 12, 2014 | Pic of the day. The Home-run Bat in this game is black! And it's so powerful that your eyes might bug out!! | Confirms the return of the Home-Run Bat, with a redesign in its appearance. Donkey Kong is also shown with a new, more comical pain face.
And here's a look at a home run exiting the arena.
February 13, 2014 | Pic of the day. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day...and the day the new Nintendo Direct airs! It will stream in Japan at 7 AM so it's going to be a very early morning for us...! | Peach shown generating a rainbow, though Sakurai did not say anything about it, making it unclear if it's a new attack or taunt (and which attack/taunt it is). The most common speculation is that it'll be her up aerial, as her up tilt and up smash have been seen already.
February 14, 2014 | Pic of the day. From Punch-out!!, our boxing challenger Little Mac joins the battle!! To get a glimpse of his fearsome punches, check out the newest video or visit the official web site. | The pic of the day following Little Mac's reveal in the aforementioned Nintendo Direct, with Sakurai confirming some information about Little Mac's Power Meter seen in the trailer. This was posted late on the 13th in the Americas and Europe, but counts as the post for the 14th due to it being the 14th according to the Japanese timezone.
His biggest feature is his Power Meter. When this gets charged up, his standard special move changes! It turns into a one-hit-K.O. uppercut.
February 17, 2014 | Pic of the day. Little Mac can deliver some solid punches while fighting on the ground. | Sakurai alludes that Little Mac will be an exceptionally strong ground fighter, with a significant weakness in his aerial combat abilities, similar to Snake and Olimar in Brawl.
...However, he's not the strongest fighter while airborne. Try keeping his feet on the ground and avoid being blasted into the air when you use him in battles.
February 18, 2014 | Pic of the day. Hey look, a bottle!! This is a special item that can even heal fighters who have accumulated over 100% damage. | Confirms a new healing item, the Bottled Fairy from the Legend of Zelda series. It is currently unclear if Sakurai's statement means it can heal more than 100% damage.
February 19, 2014 | Pic of the day. This dog is huge… Wait, no, the playable characters are small. The Smash Bros. series doesn't always stay true to scale. | While nothing new was shown, Sakurai's enigmatic statement about the Smash series not staying true to scale has led fans to speculate that Sakurai is hinting at characters thought too large to be playable in Smash, mainly Ridley, will be downsized to be on the playable roster.
February 20, 2014 | Pic of the day. As shown in Little Mac's debut video, here is the height difference between Samus and Little Mac. He's used those mighty green gloves to punch out many challengers bigger than himself. | This image plays off an image shown on the Dojo!! comparing Little Mac's height to Samus'.
February 21, 2014 | Pic of the day. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is out now in Europe and North America! ...And to celebrate, Diddy Kong joins the battle!! | Confirming Diddy Kong's return as a playable character, along with more elastic limbs that stretch out farther in his attacks, buffing the reach in his attacks.
We've increased Diddy Kong's flexibility this time. This picture shows how far his punches stretch during his strong side attack.
February 24, 2014 | The twin rocketbarrels are back, now with the ability to launch along more horizontal trajectories. They can also come off when opponents hit them mid-boost. | Sakurai confirms a flexibility buff in Diddy Kong's Rocketbarrel Boost, though the extent of its greater horizontal coverage is not shown nor explicitly referred to. This also confirms that the rocketbarrels will maintain their projectile property when Diddy is hit while using the move.
February 25, 2014 | Pic of the day. There are actually two versions of the boxing ring stage! This ring is the Smash Bros. version… | Confirms that the prior seen Smash version of the Boxing Ring stage will be another version of the stage, rather than just being a placeholder to hide it being a Punch Out!! stage before Little Mac's reveal. Sakurai also makes a remark alluding to King Dedede often being fought in rings in the Kirby games.
…and this one is the Punch Out!! W.V.B.A. design. King Dedede really likes fighting in the ring, doesn't he?
February 26, 2014 | Pic of the day. Now consecutive standard attacks will always transition into a finishing move. This is Fox's finishing kick after his standard combo attack. | It's not clear what Sakurai is exactly stating in this update, though this is believed to mean "all infinite jabs will have a final hit of decent power when released".
February 27, 2014 | Pic of the day. Once again, Waluigi's Assist Trophy joins the collection!! …Which also means he's not a playable character. Just because you try hard doesn't mean you'll make it into the battle. | Confirms Waluigi's return as an Assist Trophy, while also disconfirming him being a playable character. Sakurai's remark after the confirmation seems to be a jab at Waluigi's notorious reputation as being a character that always appears in the Mario spinoff games, but never in the main series games. It could also be a response to many wishlists that included Waluigi.
February 28, 2014 | Pic of the day. Dedenne's hard at work too. | Confirms Dedenne will appear, presumably as a Poké Ball summon. While not outright confirmed as such, its lack of a character page on the official site strongly implies it. |
