Dash attack canceling (also called Smash-boosting) is a technique that can be performed by all members of the cast of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It involves performing a dash attack and interrupting it with an up-smash. However, for some characters like Toon Link, Mario, Ice Climbers and Fox, it is extremely hard to perform, even if you slow the time down. Because of the way that dash attacks work, this results in a seamless transition. Additionally, if the dash attack is one that has a lot of movement, this can result in the character performing this to slide while performing the up-smash. In the case of Solid Snake, this slide is very long, and is known to some as Snakedashing.

How to easily perform dash attack cancel

1.Simply connect the attack at the initial frames and perform an up smash. This only works for a few characters, such as Snake and Falco.

2.This method can only be used on the Gamecube Controller and the Classic Controller. One should set grab or attack to one of the shoulder buttons, and smash attack to the C-Stick/Right Analog Stick. Tap jump should be turned off. Start dashing by smashing the control stick diagonally up. The character should be dashing. Then, tilt the smash attack stick to any direction other than up. The character will do a dash attack. Immediately after tilting the smash attack stick, press the attack/grab shoulder button. If the character has a relatively longer time for dash attack canceling to work, such as Snake, Link, Falco and Wario, dash attack canceling would work.

3. This can also be performed with the Wiimote and Nunchuck control scheme. To do this in the easiest possible way. Turn on the Shake Smash. Now you can just dash and madly flail the remote up and down. Most of the time, this will successfully do it.

4. This is an alternate method for the Wiimote and Nunchuk control scheme. (It is not necessary but you can change down on the D-Pad to attack) Start dashing by smashing the control stick straight left or right. Then initiate a dash attack with the A button. Then rotate the control stick up and hit A again (or Down on the D-Pad) with the exact same timing as a Gamecube controller. This may take a few tries, but if having a lot of difficulty, while dashing, shift the control stick from completely sideways to diagonally up still in the same direction of you running, then try again.

  • note - It helps to take off tap jump to reduce the chance of jumping if timed incorrectly
  • Try to press the initial attack button and let go as fast as possible, and then press attack again.
  • It will work if you roll your thumb up from "A" to Down on the D-Pad but not as often as pressing each attack button individually.

5.An alternative way to perform the Snakedash is to first dash, then when ready to attack, hit down on the C-stick and immediately after doing so, hit Up with the analog stick and Z at the same time. (Smash attack does not need to be set on the C-stick if done this way)
