EarthBound is a sequel to the original Mother, a Famicom/Nintendo Entertainment System title released only in Japan. Mother and EarthBound are not directly connected. One of the only connections plotwise between the two is Giygas, the primary antagonist in both games, who was also significantly changed between the first and second games.

In Super Smash Bros.

Ness, the main character of Earthbound, is unlockable in the game.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Characters

Ness returns as a starter character in Melee.

Items

Mr. Saturn is an item which can be picked up and thrown at opponents, dealing very low damage and knockback, though it's effective at breaking shields.

Stages

Onett, the first town from the game becomes a starter stage, complete with the meteor in the background and a "Runaway Five" truck. Curiously, the music is not from Earthbound, but from Mother. The metropolis of Fourside is unlockable after doing a certain amount of matches, it contains various skyscrapers and even a cameo from Porky Minch's helicopter. It's music is a soft rock version of the Fourside theme.

Trophies

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Masterpieces

EarthBound is one of the Masterpieces, but it is only available in Japanese version of the game.

Characters

Ness returns as an unlockable character, and Lucas from Mother 3 joins the roster.

Stages

Onett returns as a Melee Stage and is almost identical, except for a smaller warning alarm and a lack of the Meteor in the background.

Assist Trophy

Jeff Andonuts is now an Assist Trophy, he'll fire multi bottle rockets at oppenents in waves. How many he'll do is random.

Items

Mr. Saturn returns as an item and is virtually identical to his role in Melee and the Franklin Badge, which Ness receives in Happy Happy Village also becomes an item.

Bosses

Porky Minch is a boss in the Subspace Emissary, although his design is taken from Mother 3, not this game.
