The Sheriff universe (シェリフ, Sheriff) is a universe that is represented in Super Smash Bros. 4 by the Sheriff assist trophy. The franchise consists of two games, Sheriff and a simplified remake named Sheriff 2, both developed by Nintendo for arcades in 1979.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee
The titular Sheriff appears as a trophy.
Trophy information
- Sheriff
- Sheriff is a game with a particularly long history, even among other classic Nintendo arcade games. You aimed the sheriff's gun by way of an eight-directional dial controller, which you would depress to fire. The goal of this frontier shooter was to protect the territory from various scoundrels and ne'er-do-wells.
- Japan Only
In Super Smash Bros. 4
The Sheriff is an Assist Trophy in this game. When summoned, he will start shooting opponents with his gun and walk around the screen.
Trophies
- Sheriff
- This arcade game was released in 1979 in Japan. The game used an eight-direction joystick and a switch to control the title character. In Smash Bros., the sheriff will appear in his original glory and fire in eight directions. The bullets are tough to dodge, and they pack a serious punch.
- This arcade game was released in Europe in 1980. The game used an eight-direction joystick, and a switch to control the title character. In this game, the sheriff will appear in his original glory and fire in eight directions. The bullets are tough to dodge and will really knock your socks off.
- Sheriff (1980)
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The Sheriff reprises his role as an Assist Trophy in Ultimate, with little-to-no changes since Smash 4.

Trivia
- Sheriff is the first major universe in the series (as well as the first universe in general) to skip an installment, as it was represented in Super Smash Bros. Melee, had no representation whatsoever in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and received representation again in Super Smash Bros. 4. This distinction would later be shared with Metal Gear, Electroplankton, Joy Mech Fight, Custom Robo, Kururin, and Drill Dozer, as those universes have had representation in Brawl (though both Custom Robo and Kururin were first represented in Melee), had no content whatsoever in Super Smash Bros. 4, and would later have representation again in Ultimate.
- However, Sheriff and Joy Mech Fight were only minor universes prior to being dropped and returning in the series.
- Erroneously, the Sheriff trophy in Melee incorrectly says that the game was released only in Japan, though it was also released in Europe and the United States (under the name Bandido in the latter case).
- Sheriff is one of the only three properties represented in Smash to debut in the 1970s, the others being Color TV-Game and Galaxian.
