Masahiro Sakurai once stated that he wanted guest characters like Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog to be unlockables. However, they supposedly later didn't use that idea as Smash Bros. DOJO!! updates and not a mention later of them being unlockable has been release later. Sonic has also been confirmed as a starter character in the gameplay demos at E for All and screenshots at the DOJO!! Also, the Subspace Emissary has been confirmed to be needed for unlocking the most secret characters.

An unlockable character is a character that is not available at the start of the game (unlike a starter character), but must be unlocked. A special criteria is needed in order to unlock a character. First, the player must do a special task, once the task is done, then a message will display "Warning! Challenger Approaching!" with a silhoutte of the character. The player must be then challenge and defeat the character to unlock the character. Template:Spoiler
