Bayonetta (ベヨネッタ, Bayonetta) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She was confirmed as a playable character on June 12th, 2018. Bayonetta is once again voiced by Hellena Taylor in the English version, using recycled voice clips from Super Smash Bros. 4.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Aesthetics
- As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Bayonetta's model features a more subdued color scheme.
- Love is Blue and Scarborough Fair have louder sound effects to distinguish the two.
- Bayonetta's taunts are sped up.
- When the victory screen shows her name, Bayonetta's glasses glint at the edge. While this was present in her victory poses in Smash 4, it only showed for a brief moment.
Attributes
- Like all characters, Bayonetta's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.
- Bayonetta's bullet arts can now be angled slightly upwards or downwards, depending on the move.
Ground attacks
- Jab combo connects more reliably.
- Jab 1 has less range.
- Bayonetta's tilts all have less range.
- All of Bayonetta's smash attacks deal less knockback, have slightly less range and slightly more startup and ending lag.
- Forward smash can now be angled.
Aerial Attacks
- Held neutral aerial and up aerial have increased landing lag.
- Forward aerial has less landing lag.
- All hits of forward aerial have increased damage.
- Forward aerial doesn't bounce off of opponents anymore. This means that the first hit of it can no longer combo into After Burner Kick or Witch Twist at low to medium percents.
- Both back aerial and up aerial have less landing lag.
- Back aerial has more ending lag.
- Up aerial deals less damage and its knockback has been reduced substantially. This improves its combo potential but hinders it KO ability.
- Down aerial's knockback appears to have been lowered.
- Down aerial has more landing lag.
Throws/other attacks
- Bayonetta's hand now grabs characters using a form of umbran magic, as seen via a slightly updated animation where she swings her hand around, which is sparkling with a noticeable umbran purple.
Special moves
- Bullet Climax now needs to be fully charged before it can be shield-cancelled.
- If the first hit of Heel Slide is blocked by a shield, she will be unable to use the second hit.
- She also can no longer use another After Burner Kick if it collides with an opponent's shield, preventing multiple mixups and ledge getup options.
- Downwards After Burner Kick can no longer be autocancelled.
- Downwards After Burner Kick now launches opponents upwards, which, improves its combo potential.
- Downwards After Burner Kick has more knockback scaling, hindering its ability to combo into itself at mid percent despite the angle change.
- DI is much more effective against Downwards After Burner Kick and, due to this, opponents can avoid being hit by a second one more easily even at low percents.
- If Bayonetta hits someone with a Downwards After Burner Kick after hitting them with an After Burner Kick she will gain another After Burner Kick.
- Witch Twist has increased startup and can no longer snap to the ledge until the move ends or with proper spacing. This allows her to be easily punished.
- Witch Time no longer grants intangibility when used, and its effect duration has been significantly lowered. It also has increased start-up and endlag.
- The screen turns dark whenever someone is affected by Witch Time.
Role in World of Light
Bayonetta was among the fighters summoned to the cliffside to fight against the army of Master Hands.
Bayonetta was present when Galeem unleashed its beams of light. Bayonetta dodged a beam of light, activating her Bat Within, but she was then vaporized immediately after she reformed her body, and transformed into a spirit alongside the rest of the fighters, excluding Kirby.
