| Discovered in Super Smash Bros. Melee, the grab cancel, also known as a boost grab, is the only form of L canceling that can be performed on the ground. Unlike the typical L cancel, which has to be performed in the air prior to landing on the ground from an aerial attack, the grab cancel can only be done when the player performs a dash attack. It can't be done if the player does a smash attack or a jab. It doesn't cancel the lag of the attack, but it completely cancels the attack and turns it into a grab. To do this, the player must dash, press A while dashing and press L, R, or Z immediately within the first frame. This move is more useful than a dash attack if the player wants to prevent themself from getting hit. But if the player skips the first frame of the dash attack and then grab, then they won't do a grab cancel and they'll suffer due to the lag of the attack. If done correctly, they'll skip straight to a grab. Although this attack looks useless, leading the player to think that they can just press Z to save time, the grab cancel is a very good mindgame.
