   The intent with this is to get consistency between the icons of the three games. The current system has two sets of .pngs with names and round yet non-transparent corners against one set of .gifs with a different aspect ratio and naming system - now everything is an equally-sized .png with the same borders and naming convention. Question

April is soon upon us. Soon we will go about replacing old icons. I have some suggestions for this to make it easier on us;

A) Reupload the old icon pictures with the new icon pictures.

B) Delete all the old icons and rename the new ones using the old naming system to avoid browser refreshing problems.

D) Or, stick with the suggested plan of replacing each and every instance of the old icon usage.

Let me elaborate on why your two ideas are implausible at best:

1. The old icons were ~60px at biggest, with the Brawl ones being ~50px-ish wide. As a result many of them have been used without a size specifier - which means that the new 100x100 icons will cause serious ballooning with a straight replacement.
2. Part of the reason why I did this was to replace the naming system. The Melee one had unusual shortcuts; the Brawl one was completely out of sync with the other two.
3. The old Brawl icons are .gifs, the new ones are .pngs. You cannot upload a .png into a .gif filename, and if you're saving a .png as a .gif you might as well write a story without vowels. Toomai Glittershine The Brass 17:20, 31 March 2012 (EDT)

Adding nowiki tags to user pages

To facilitate the changeover, would it be reasonable to add nowiki tags to userpages of users who are unregistered and/or inactive? This would greatly reduce the time and effort required to purge the userspace of the old icons. I would oppose this, because of the above reason, and also that it generally doesn't look neat. Really, this is the kind of task a bot would handle, but I'd still rather us do it all manually than just sticking nowiki in front of it. Toast ltimatum 12:55, 18 April 2012 (EDT)

How to replace icons

This procedure will require the use of the "search and replace" function, which on Windows is performed by pressing "Ctrl+H" and on Macs, "⌘ Cmd+F". The actions "find" and "replace" shall be understood to refer to this function.

1. Copy the section of the user page with the relevant file links from the page source into a word processor or text editor, such as Microsoft Word or Notepad++.
2. Initiate the aforementioned "search and replace" function.
3. Determine which game the icons are from, and locate the corresponding table below.
4. Enter the text from the Find column into the relevant field in the dialogue box and likewise with the Replace column.
   1. Use either the Image: or the File: prefixes, depending on the code.
5. Replace the text, and repeat until all the icons have been switched. Items in italics may or may not have to be replaced, depending on the content of the page.
6. Copy the text back into the user page, preview it, and save if satisfactory.

Some notes:

1. You can replace things with a blank, so you don't need to include the Image:/File: when getting rid of the old prefixes.
2. The é of Pokémon Trainer isn't strictly necessary, as there's a redirect in place. Still preferred though.

You also didn't present any new images to replace the old icons with, other than your suggestion to use the character select portraits. Compared to Toomai's proposal, where he got new icons for every character in each game before making his proposal, so we could directly compare the new icons to the old icons we had. He also made his proposal proper, while your "proposal" was a half-assed suggestion at best.
