Deletion

I oppose deleting this. If it needs to be updated, it would be simple to fix that, and Power Rankings don't change often enough where we'll be eternally behind (like in the case of those tournament lists). For necessity, this was a legitimate power ranking, and even if it isn't updated anymore, it still has encyclopedic value for our competitive coverage. Omega Tyrant 17:01, 19 December 2011 (EST)

I forgot to mention this in my reason for deleting, but what source is this article based on? I could not find any mention of any "Smash Panel Power Rankings" on Smashboards, and unlike other power rankings pages, this doesn't provide a link for reference. Going through the edit history, Masked Marth, a former admin here, updated the list with this link in their edit summary. Unfortunately, the link just goes to the general Melee board there, rather than the topic for the rankings. Just adding an observation here - the data we have here may not only be outdated, but outright false. After skimming the history of this page, I discovered that the current rankings we have are from this guy, and judging by some of his edits, he may have been a vandal. We can revert to the latest confirmed version, but that's nearly 4 years ago, and those rankings are likely no better than what we have here in terms of informative content. Since this entire article might be false, I propose temporarily deleting it until we have more updated information. Better not to have this then for readers to gain false information. According to Mousehunter, though, SmashBoards no longer keeps a Smash Panel Power Ranking, so the usefulness of this article is in doubt. Mr. Anontalk 17:31, 19 December 2011 (EST)

That's what happens when you skim a history without looking at each edit. I missed this, where someone restored it to the last known ones. Still, what we have here is no doubt outright wrong rankings, as the Smash scene has changed considerably since the last update which was years ago. Mr. Anontalk 17:41, 19 December 2011 (EST)

As listed in the article, these were national rankings from a now defunct panel. The page isn't intended to be rankings of the current Melee landscape, but about the panel and its rankings. Whether they are accurate or not now is irrelevant. Omega Tyrant 17:49, 19 December 2011 (EST)

The issue here is that there is no proof that the information here was based off of the Smash Panel, or if the Smash Panel even existed. Previous post was aimed at Anon to tell him how his post was irrelevant. For sources, as you may find out, the SmashWiki back then (where all those crap smasher articles came from) were pretty bad about sources. About every old article like this lacks sources. Despite that, they don't have accuracy issues (outside the vanity smasher pages of course).

With that said, considering how long this been around, the seeming accuracy of the information, and the fact it was last updated by a respected admin (who did source it in their link, just that link doesn't work anymore), I don't think this article should be deleted solely due to the lack of sources. In any case we need to know whether this is even notable in the first place. This article was made in 2006, back when SmashWiki was still part of SmashBoards. What is notable within Smashboards is not necessarily notable here. Mr. Anontalk 19:56, 19 December 2011 (EST)

Yes indeed, over the course of about a year or so (most of 2006, the year Melee was on the MLG Pro Circuit), we would meet every so often on private forums to discuss the rankings. This looks like the very last edition of the list we did, I can't remember if we did 4 or 5. Also some panelists were added/removed as time went on.

I don't know if the thread for these rankings still exists, as it would have been created over 5 years ago, and SWF has undergone many major overhauls since then. I tried searching for them but they're either in an inaccessible forum, or deleted, but I'm guessing the former. But I'll keep up the search, I may have logs from chat rooms that have old lists and such, and I'll let you know if I find anything.
