As a recovery move, this is arguably Meta Knight's best recovery move; it all depends on position. If the player is far under the stage but very near to it, then Drill Rush (angled upward) or Shuttle Loop is probably the better choice. However, if the player is far away from the stage and under it (any distance up to almost magnified) then the Mach Tornado is the best choice providing Meta Knight has at least 1 jump left. If he does, then using a jump before the tornado will allow for more vertical height gain than if the player were to start the move whilst falling. Since it gains such a huge horizontal distance on top of a large vertical distance as well as being very high priority, this is one of the best recovery options in the game. However, something to note is that Meta Knight will bounce off of edges rather than grabbing them if he hits them while he is in the tornado. He also cannot grab edges during the first few frames of his falling animation out of the tornado.

The tornado causes a slight [[pull]] on nearby opponents. Enemies that touch the tornado are trapped, slashed multiple times, and then sent flying with a final hit that deals moderate [[knockback]]. The move is hard to escape via [[directional influence]], and the final hit deals moderate knockback, making it an effective [[KO]] finisher if enemies are near the top [[blast line]].


Control-wise, this move is like [[Kirby]]'s "Tornado" ability that appears in many of the Kirby games. Holding B will make him gain height. Meta Knight first used it in Kirby Super Star, where he transformed into a yellow tornado to attack.

Mach Tornado makes an appearance in ''Kirby Super Star Ultra''. In the sub-game "Meta Knightmare Ultra", the player controls Meta Knight and gains points for each enemy he defeats. These points can be spent to use "Meta Quick" which increases Meta Knight's speed; "Summon Knight" which calls a Blade Knight or Sword Knight to help out Meta Knight (and can be controlled by player 2); "Heal" which fully heals Meta Knight and Blade Knight (if he has one); and finally "Mach Tornado" which destroys all enemies on the screen. Mach Tornado is much more exaggerated in this appearance, as it creates an enormous pillar of swirling energy that splits into two and covers the entire screen. Most mini bosses and enemies are destroyed instantly, while bosses lose a very large fraction of their life.
The move is not completely infallible, however; Meta Knight will bounce off [[edge]]s rather than [[grab]] them during the move, and is additionally unable to grab edges during the first few [[frame]]s of his helpless animation. This can potentially cause a [[self-destruct]] if the move is mistimed. However, the move's duration and mobility have been nerfed considerably; it lasts a much shorter amount of time unless the player button mashes, and its reduced horizontal and vertical mobility give it more limited use as a recovery (vertical movement is especially affected). Mach Tornado is one of [[Meta Knight]]'s attacks that first appeared in ''[[Kirby Super Star]]''. It is also similar to [[Kirby]]’s Tornado ability from the [[Kirby (universe)|''Kirby'' series]].
 
In ''Kirby Super Star Ultra'', Meta Knight stars in his own mode, ''Meta Knightmare Ultra'', which involves him replaying various levels from other sub-games. In said game mode, defeating enemies would allow him to gain points to perform various special techniques. The strongest technique is also named Mach Tornado, but is instead a screen-clearing attack similar to a [[Final Smash]], instead of a small tornado. As ''Kirby Super Star Ultra'' was released after ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'', it's likely that the move was named after Meta Knight's neutral special move.
 
''Kirby: Planet Robobot'' also names his variant of the airborne Twister Slash technique Mach Tornado, though his grounded version features the yellow trail commonly associated with the move.

Mach Tornado (マッハトルネイド, Mach Tornado) is Meta Knight's neutral special move. It involves Meta Knight spinning in a controllable tornado, which traps opponents and slashes them for consistent damage.

When activated, Meta Knight spins at high speed and surrounds himself in a dense yellow tornado that covers a majority of him for a set period of time, which can be extended by mashing the special button; mashing also causes Meta Knight to rise up vertically. More vertical distance is gained if the player simultaneously jumps and performs the move. Mach Tornado can be controlled by pressing left or right to move in that direction. Once the move ends, Meta Knight falls helpless.
