Creature description
Disambig
Steelix is a colossal, metallic, segmented serpent with a huge head and jaw. As explained by the Pokédex, it is believed that the already huge, rocky Onix evolved into this species after having lived deep underground for over 100 years, tempering its body through compression, pressure and heat into a metal substance like a diamond but even harder. Alternatively, it is thought its body transformed as a result of iron accumulating internally from swallowing soil. It lives even further underground than Onix, and is known to dig towards the earth's core. There are records of Steelix reaching a depth of over six-tenths of a mile underground. Its eyes can see in the dark underground, and it chews its way through boulders with its sturdy jaws. The many small metal particles that cover its body reflect bright light well.

Steelix is the Iron Snake Pokémon which is both Ground and Steel type. It is the evolved form of Onix that was introduced in the second edition of the Pokémon RPGs.  From then onward you could typically obtain a Steelix by trading an Onix holding a "Metal Coat" item to another trainer and watching it evolve, then trading the new Steelix back. At the time it was introduced, it was the largest Pokémon species, at an average length of over 30 feet. It was outperformed by the current record-holder for largest Pokémon species, the blue whale Pokémon Wailord.

As a trophy
Steelix features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

:Steelix:
:A combination of Steel- and Ground-types, Steelix are the longest Pokémon yet to be discovered, reaching over 30 feet in length. Since they live so deep under the surface of the earth, the intense pressure has made their bodies stronger than diamonds. Evolved from Onix, Steelix is every bit as intimidating as its relative.
