Should it be prohibited to maliciously impersonate active users from non-SmashWiki communities (e.g. YouTube, Reddit, Twitter etc.)? --[[User:Zakawer2|Zakawer2]] ([[User talk:Zakawer2|talk]]) 20:35, February 1, 2022 (EST)

== Rule amendment regarding similar usernames ==
{{proposal|passed}} | |||
Currently we have it in our rules that people cannot use a username that is functionally identical or very similar to another active wiki user (or a now inactive but significant wiki user). This rule is good to prevent impersonation and eliminate the inevitable confusion that would occur from two similarly-named users being mistaken for each other, but I do want to make the following amendment:
*This restriction on overly similar usernames will be extended to significant Smash figures that do not have SmashWiki accounts, so people will not be allowed to use such names without verifying that they are said figure the name belongs to. This will stamp out any impersonation attempts, prevent issues arising from the account making edits where their identity is relevant (e.g. [[Special:Contributions/Gimr|making edits]] where their legitimacy is based on the user's identity or partaking in conflict of interest editing), and prevent the awkwardness of a big name person trying to create an account on the wiki after their username was already taken by some rando.
**This restriction will not apply to overly generic names, e.g. "[[Light]]" or any first name tag. When a name is so generic that several noteworthy figures use the name, it's not practical to bother trying to "reserve" the name, and in the event that multiple people with that same generic tag want to join the wiki, then it's still in our best interest to make them use different usernames so that they aren't confused for each other.
There is no hard criteria for what constitutes a "significant Smash figure" and it will have to be decided on a case-by-case basis. So when a new account springs up using a username that would possibly violate this, the administration should be notified and they'll decide if the name is of a significant enough figure to restrict its usage. If they decide it is, the procedure will then be to leave a talk page message notifying the user that they will need to verify their identity with the administration, and if the user confesses or does not give verification, the account will be blocked and the user will be forced to select a new name. If the user refuses to cooperate or does not respond in a timely fashion, then their name will be forcibly changed to something else to free up the username (while any attempt to create new accounts under the restricted name will be met with farther blocks). What do people think of this idea; are you for it, against it, or have any suggestions for revisions to this idea? <span style="font-family:Edwardian Script ITC; font-size:12pt">[[User:Omega Tyrant|<span style="color:forestgreen">Omega</span>]] [[User talk:Omega Tyrant|<span style="color:forestgreen">Tyrant</span>]]</span> [[File: TyranitarMS.png ]] 14:27, October 17, 2023 (EDT)
:Fully onboard with this. A useful heuristic might be if either the name has a Smasher page, or has a red-link to a Smasher page in at least 3 places (or some other arbitrary number) on the wiki, then they're considered a significant smash figure. For example ü or é or ñ. I think we already do allow these from what I've seen, and they often appear as part of names, so it seems reasonable to include them. Since they are not considered to be English, should the wording of this rule be adjusted to be more accurate? Or is this unnecessary? ::Do you mean “we will never disallow names of real life people”? People such as Sakurai appear significant Smash figures enough to me that it wouldn’t surprise me if impersonating them would cause confusion. Or would “significant Smash figures” only apply to anyone who would have their page named “Smasher:<nowiki><username></nowiki>”, anyone who works at Nintendo would never edit SmashWiki? :::The odds of Sakurai legitimately making an account to edit anything is near zero. Because of this, no one would be confused when "Sakurai" makes dumb edits and someone would need to go through a lot of effort to make people thing they are legit (admins could check if they come from a Japanese IP for instance). Also the likely way that someone like Sakurai or Regie would interact with the wiki would be through a legal notice.
:::The community cares what people like {{Sm|Sparg0}} or {{Sm|MkLeo}} say about things and someone using that username would easily be called out. Someone impersonating {{Sm|Floppeh}} would be under less scrutiny but would probably still be noticed. Someone probably cares about {{Sm|Garian}}'s opinion but not the wider community these days, and anyone willing to use such a name would likely be that Smasher. --[[User:CanvasK|CanvasK]] ([[User talk:CanvasK|talk]]) 05:11, February 28, 2024 (EST)
:::"We're absolutely not going to ban real names from being used", so yes we will never disallow names of real life people and even if there is a case like "Hitler", "we already have a blanket rule against blatantly offensive usernames". Renaming proposal[edit]
I think we should include a section on renaming users, so users know what exactly happens (and that it exists). It would go something like this:
- "If a user doesn't like their current username, it is possible for a bureaucrat to change the username. The process is really simple.
- After deciding on a new username, a user would report the new username request to an active bureaucrat on his/her talk page.
- The bureaucrat will decide if the name change is appropriate. If it is, then the bureaucrat will ask the user to wait a few days to make sure he/she really wants the new username. When a few days have passed, the user should remind the bureaucrat of the rename, which at that time, the bureaucrat will rename the user. In the event the new username is not appropriate, the bureaucrat will ask the user to come up with a new name."
It's not the best of wordings, to be honest, but it's a general idea, and you may fix it as you please. Rtzxy Reflect! 22:58, 4 December 2014 (EST)
- I'm working on a separate policy page for this; I don't think it really works well merged with this one. Toomai Glittershine The Obfuscating 23:00, 4 December 2014 (EST)

Should names quite similar or identical to article titles be acceptable?[edit]
^Per title. Regardless of what the answer to this question is, I firmly believe it should be addressed on the policy page. If this discussion has taken place before then my apologies. Copyright usernames[edit]
So seeing how SpaceDong was banned for having "dong" in it, would this mean that for example, I would like to request a username change to "ConstructAdditionalPylons", but it would be unacceptable? Dots (talk) The Blue 09:31, 9 March 2016 (EST)
Do we really need reports here?[edit]
I was looking through the admin noticeboard when I came across my old edit directing a user here, to which the user in question replied that the inappropriate name section over there was more reliable. Should we exclusively report names over there? Awesomelink234, the Super Cool Gamer (talk) 21:08, January 20, 2021 (EST)
Potential amendment suggestion[edit]
Should it be prohibited to maliciously impersonate active users from non-SmashWiki communities (e.g. YouTube, Reddit, Twitter etc.)? --Zakawer2 (talk) 20:35, February 1, 2022 (EST)
- I think there was a time where a impersonation was reported and that account was dealt with so there are indeed something being done to these malicious accounts. NPM Morr!? 00:07, February 2, 2022 (EST)
Rule amendment regarding similar usernames[edit]
Currently we have it in our rules that people cannot use a username that is functionally identical or very similar to another active wiki user (or a now inactive but significant wiki user). This rule is good to prevent impersonation and eliminate the inevitable confusion that would occur from two similarly-named users being mistaken for each other, but I do want to make the following amendment:
- This restriction on overly similar usernames will be extended to significant Smash figures that do not have SmashWiki accounts, so people will not be allowed to use such names without verifying that they are said figure the name belongs to. This will stamp out any impersonation attempts, prevent issues arising from the account making edits where their identity is relevant (e.g. making edits where their legitimacy is based on the user's identity or partaking in conflict of interest editing), and prevent the awkwardness of a big name person trying to create an account on the wiki after their username was already taken by some rando.
- This restriction will not apply to overly generic names, e.g. "Light" or any first name tag.
Omega Tyrant 14:27, October 17, 2023 (EDT)
- Fully onboard with this. A useful heuristic might be if either the name has a Smasher page, or has a red-link to a Smasher page in at least 3 places (or some other arbitrary number) on the wiki, then they're considered a significant smash figure. Stuart98 (talk) 14:33, October 17, 2023 (EDT)

Should usernames based off non-Smash celebrities be banned as well?[edit]
Such as Taylor Swift or Terry Fox Gligar2007 20:53, January 13, 2024 (EST).
Should we amend the rule about non-English characters to include letters from other languages that are not considered standard English?[edit]
For example ü or é or ñ. I think we already do allow these from what I've seen, and they often appear as part of names, so it seems reasonable to include them. Since they are not considered to be English, should the wording of this rule be adjusted to be more accurate? Or is this unnecessary? Alex the Weeb 22:37, January 13, 2024 (EST)
What if people create usernames impersonating voice actors or deceased smashers?[edit]
Such as if someone makes an account named “Charles Martinet” or “NES n00b?” Would the voice actors never edit this wiki so nobody would care or would it highly depend, meaning you can’t name yourself “Satoru Iwata” or “Masahiro Sakurai”? Gligar2007 21:21, February 27, 2024 (EST)
- Pretty sure your question had been answered in the last talk post on your talk page. CookiesCreme 21:27, February 27, 2024 (EST)
- Do you mean “we will never disallow names of real life people”? People such as Sakurai appear significant Smash figures enough to me that it wouldn’t surprise me if impersonating them would cause confusion. Or would “significant Smash figures” only apply to anyone who would have their page named “Smasher:<username>”, anyone who works at Nintendo would never edit SmashWiki? Gligar2007 23:43, February 27, 2024 (EST)
- The odds of Sakurai legitimately making an account to edit anything is near zero.
- The community cares what people like Sparg0 or MkLeo say about things and someone using that username would easily be called out. Someone impersonating Floppeh would be under less scrutiny but would probably still be noticed. Someone probably cares about Garian's opinion but not the wider community these days, and anyone willing to use such a name would likely be that Smasher. --CanvasK (talk) 05:11, February 28, 2024 (EST)
- "We're absolutely not going to ban real names from being used", so yes we will never disallow names of real life people and even if there is a case like "Hitler", "we already have a blanket rule against blatantly offensive usernames". Both of these statements were taken from your (Gligar) talk page. CookiesCreme 11:41, February 28, 2024 (EST)
