Origin
Origin
Mega Man is a highly advanced robot with a near-human personality created by Dr. Thomas Light. In the year 20XX, Dr. Light and Dr. Albert Wily worked together to create robots with unprecedented artificial intelligence that could be used to supervise other less advanced robots. The prototype of these robots was known as Proto Man (called Blues in Japan), but having a free-spirited personality, and fearing being tampered with to fix an unstable core, he ran away. Dr. Light theorized that Proto Man ran away because he desired a companion, so he next designed two robots: Rock, designed as a lab assistant, and Roll, designed for house work. Based on these successes, Light and Wily then built six Robot Masters: Cut Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man, and Elec Man. However, Dr. Wily grew jealous of the recognition Light received for their work. Wily began his designs for world conquest and stole the Robot Masters. Seeing Rock and Roll as useless, Wily left them behind, inadvertently creating his ultimate undoing, as Rock would volunteer to be converted into a fighting robot. As Mega Man, he would thwart Wily's plans time and time again.
Mega Man was designed by Akira Kitamura and Keiji Inafune. He is a highly-advanced fighting robot created by the brilliant scientist Dr. Thomas Light, though he was not born this way. In the year 20XX, Dr. Light created two household robots: a boy named Rock, designed as a lab assistant, and a girl named Roll, designed for house work. He also made at least six other robots called Robot Masters who worked in industrial capacities. One day, Dr. Light's former colleague, Dr. Albert Wily, suddenly kidnapped his Robot Masters and reprogrammed them into his servants in a bid to conquer the world. Struck by this injustice, Rock volunteered to be modified into a fighting robot in order to stop Dr. Wily's evil robot army. With his new blue armor and Mega Buster, Rock became Mega Man. As Mega Man, he would thwart Wily's plans time and time again across the series.

As Mega Man, Rock possesses the Mega Buster, a weapon that converts his hands into a powerful energy cannon. From Mega Man 4 onwards until Mega Man 9, the Buster can be charged to release a Charge Shot. Beginning in Mega Man 3 and again continuing until Mega Man 9, he also possesses the ability to slide along the ground. Both of these abilities return in Mega Man 11. Mega Man's most impressive power, however, is his Variable Weapons System, which allows him to copy the powers of Robot Masters he defeats. These weapons then prove useful for taking out smaller enemies or another Robot Master weak to that particular weapon in a rock-paper-scissor style system.

Starting in Mega Man 4, the Mega Buster can often be charged to release a more powerful Charge Shot. Another of his main skills is the ability to slide along the ground. Mega Man's most impressive ability, however, is the Weapon Change System, which allows him to copy the powers of the Robot Master bosses he defeats. These Special Weapons then prove useful for taking out enemies or traversing areas, and are strong against another Robot Master weak to that particular weapon in a rock-paper-scissors system.

Mega Man is consistently shown to have a strong sense of justice, highly valuing peace. These values were what led him to be converted into a fighting robot in the first place, and the games stress Mega Man's never-ending fight to ensure peace. However, Mega Man has his breaking point, as seen in Mega Man 7, where he nearly kills Dr. Wily, tired of his repeated attempts at world domination. However, he is unable to kill humans, due to his binding to Asimov's laws of robotics. It was this incident that drove Dr. Light to create a more advanced, human-like android that did not adhere to the laws of robotics, resulting in his ultimate creation (and Mega Man's successor), X.
Mega Man is a strong-willed youth. He is consistently shown to have a strong sense of justice, highly valuing peace. These values were what led him to be converted into a fighting robot in the first place, and the games stress Mega Man's never-ending fight for peace. It should be noted that these values were encoded by Dr. Light, and Mega Man canonically does not have free will beyond the constraints of his programming (this limitation eventually inspired Dr. Light to create Mega Man's successor, X). The ultimate fate of Mega Man between the "Classic series" and the "X series" is unclear, however, as there are no traces of his existence by the events of Mega Man X, which takes place a century after the original series.

Mega Man has a large group of allies and companions who help him on his adventures. Dr. Light and Roll often serve in an advisory capacity, while other robots help him more directly. Rush, Mega Man's robotic dog, serves as transportation for him by transforming into tools such as a spring or jet, or by directly merging with Mega Man. Proto Man often aids his younger brother after a stint of working for Dr. Wily in Mega Man 3. Other robot helpers include Eddie, a small robot that distributes items, Beat, a bird robot that attacks enemies and saves Mega Man from falling into pits, and Auto, a robot assistant of Dr. Light that creates parts and upgrades for Mega Man.

Mega Man has a secret older brother, Proto Man, who was created as his prototype but fled from home long ago. He is a lone wolf who sometimes takes the role of Mega Man's mysterious mentor, usually fighting alongside him. Mega Man also has an aggressive arch-rival, Bass, who was created by Dr. Wily to surpass Mega Man. However, Bass is not entirely loyal to Dr. Wily and his arrogance leads him to butt heads with his creator; he has even been known to fight alongside Mega Man on the rare occasion when their goals intersect.

Mega Man (ロックマン, Rockman), also referred to as Mega (ロック, Rock), is the titular character and a main protagonist of the Mega Man series by Capcom. He was first announced as a playable character for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the E3 2013 Nintendo Direct.

Origin[edit]

Mega Man's main weapon is the Mega Buster, a system that can convert one of his hands into a powerful energy cannon.

Dr. Light and Roll often serve advisory roles, while other robots help him more directly. Rush, Mega Man's robotic dog, serves as transportation for him by transforming into tools such as a spring or jet, or by directly merging with Mega Man. Other robot helpers include Eddie, a small robot that distributes items, Beat, a bird robot that attacks enemies and can save Mega Man from falling into pits, and Auto, a robot assistant of Dr. Light who creates parts and upgrades for Mega Man.

As a playable character[edit]

Main article: Mega Man (SSB4)
Mega Man as he appears in Super Smash Bros. 4

Mega Man appears as a playable character. He uses special weapons copied from Robot Masters that he fought throughout the original series. Thus, his playstyle is more focused on weapons and range rather than physical combat, in a similar vein to Solid Snake.

Mega Man is placed 27th on the tier list, placing him within the C tier. With his arsenal of projectiles at his disposal, Mega Man is granted a strong spacing game. Some of these projectiles also have useful utility, with Metal Blade being able to be thrown in all 8 directions, Crash Bomber being ideal for pressuring shields, and up aerial having the potential to KO opponents easily at the top blast line. Mega Man also possesses some highly powerful finishers, such as up tilt, down smash, and down aerial, and he also has great air mobility due to his good air speed and high air acceleration. However, being dependent on projectiles leaves Mega Man at a disadvantage against opponents with reflectors (and Villager), and his quick falling speed and high weight give him a vulnerability to vertical hits. Overall, Mega Man's high learning curve has not allowed for much tournament representation, but his results have been impressive thanks to the efforts of players such as ScAtt and Kameme.

Trivia[edit]

  • Mega Man is the only fighter in the series to stand completely still while idle, if not performing idle animations. This is based on his original sprite in Mega Man. He also stays still when crouching and when after a victory pose.
    • Mega Man is also the only humanoid fighter with eyes who does not blink, due to him being a robot. Ironically, Mega Man was one of the first games to include blinking sprites, and the developer direct for Super Smash Bros. 4 shows Mega Man blinking in an early build.
  • Mega Man is the only fighter whose Smash Bros. amiibo figure has a variant which is not based on one of their alternate costumes.
