|Spirit Battle inspiration:
*The puppet fighters representing the Phantom Thieves appear in the order that they are recruited in the original game. Their leader Joker appears at the end, using All-Out Attack alongside his allies. The only exceptions are Haru Okumura (who appears in the background instead), Futaba Sakura (who serves as a guide rather than participating in combat), and Goro Akechi.
*The default Joker references his appearance as the main playable character of Persona 5, who serves as the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.
*Aside from the Sudden Final Smash condition that references their All-Out Attack, the appearance of Daybreak references the name of the game's OVA adaption. It could also be a reference to Sinful Shell, a skill which is used to defeat the final boss Yaldabaoth at the very end of the game.
*The Pikachu, Captain Falcon, Zero Suit Samus, Chrom, and Sheik minions each represent the members of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts: Morgana, Skull, Panther, Fox, and Queen, whose appearances, weapons, and abilities are used similarly in their respective spirit battles, and are battled in the order of their recruitment leading up to their leader, Joker.
*The stage represents Mementos, the Palace of the collective unconscious which the Phantom Thieves of Hearts use to travel the Metaverse, which features the Phantom Thief Noir as a background character.
*The stage and music track represent the introductory cutscene of Persona 5, which uses a monochromatic red-white-and-black city setting featuring the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.
*The Daybreak, when the Daybreak Parts are assembled and used, shoots out a powerful blue beam that leaves behind blue flames on the stage, similar to the blue flames that appear when one of the Phantom Thieves awakens their Persona. The Item's inclusion may also be a reference to the Persona 5 OVA "The Daybreakers", as the item shares a similar name.
*Joker's All-Out Attack Final Smash represents the similarly-named battle tactic used in Persona 5 where Joker, along with one group of three of the Phantom Thieves of Heart, attack the opponent and attempts to instantly KO them with a critical hit.
----Other trivia:
*This spirit's Support type references the Phantom Thieves of Hearts' role in Persona 5 by helping the victims of corrupt adults by changing their targets' hearts.
*This spirit's Grab type and Item Autograb ability reference the Phantom Thieves' method of changing their target's hearts by stealing their Treasure.
*The only members of the Phantom Thieves not present in this spirit battle are Futaba Sakura, who serves as a guide rather than participating in battle, and Goro Akechi, who is a temporary party member.
*Aside from Joker, each puppet fighter is possessed by the same spirit of the character they are representing. This is one of three spirit battles to have this distinction, the other two being List of spirits (Sonic the Hedgehog series) and List of spirits (Others).

*The Assist Trophy items represent how meeting Igor results in the protagonists awakening and summoning their Personas. This "awakening" aspect is also represented through the player starting with 300% damage and healing over time.
*The stage and music track represent the Velvet Room, a circular room featuring a blue color scheme where Igor serves as the proprietor in the Persona series.
*The Assist Trophy item represent the various Personas used by the protagonists of the titular series, which they can summon to assist them in battle.
*The player starting off with 300% damage and the Health Recovery rule reference the Phantom Thieves of Hearts' first awakening of their Personas in Persona 5 where they will painfully tear away a mask bonded to their face, which will eventually heal following the summoning of their Personas.
----Other trivia:
*This spirit's Support type and Neutral type reference Igor's role as an ally in Persona 5, who is later revealed to be the main antagonist Yaldabaoth in disguise.
*This spirit's Chance of Double Final Smash ability further references the awakening of the Persona 5 protagonists' Personas, which envelops them in a aura and grants them their power from their Personas.

Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There Spirit Battle inspiration:
  • The default Joker references his appearance as the main playable character of Persona 5, who serves as the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.
  • The Pikachu, Captain Falcon, Zero Suit Samus, Chrom, and Sheik minions each represent the members of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts: Morgana, Skull, Panther, Fox, and Queen, whose appearances, weapons, and abilities are used similarly in their respective spirit battles, and are battled in the order of their recruitment leading up to their leader, Joker.
  • The stage represents Mementos, the Palace of the collective unconscious which the Phantom Thieves of Hearts use to travel the Metaverse, which features the Phantom Thief Noir as a background character.
  • The stage and music track represent the introductory cutscene of Persona 5, which uses a monochromatic red-white-and-black city setting featuring the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.
  • The Daybreak, when the Daybreak Parts are assembled and used, shoots out a powerful blue beam that leaves behind blue flames on the stage, similar to the blue flames that appear when one of the Phantom Thieves awakens their Persona. The Item's inclusion may also be a reference to the Persona 5 OVA "The Daybreakers", as the item shares a similar name.
  • Joker's All-Out Attack Final Smash represents the similarly-named battle tactic used in Persona 5 where Joker, along with one group of three of the Phantom Thieves of Heart, attack the opponent and attempts to instantly KO them with a critical hit.

Other trivia:
  • This spirit's Support type references the Phantom Thieves of Hearts' role in Persona 5 by helping the victims of corrupt adults by changing their targets' hearts.
  • This spirit's Grab type and Item Autograb ability reference the Phantom Thieves' method of changing their target's hearts by stealing their Treasure.
  • The only members of the Phantom Thieves not present in this spirit battle are Futaba Sakura, who serves as a guide rather than participating in battle, and Goro Akechi, who is a temporary party member.
  • Aside from Joker, each puppet fighter is possessed by the same spirit of the character they are representing. This is one of three spirit battles to have this distinction, the other two being Dr. Eggman and Isa Jo.

Trivia[edit]

  • Both Morgana and Yusuke Kitagawa's spirit battles relate to how they share the same voice actor as their fighter, as Morgana shares his Japanese voice actress with Pikachu (which itself is actually referenced in Persona 5), and Yusuke shares both his Japanese and English voice actors with Chrom.
  • In the Phantom Thieves of Hearts battle, Haru Okumura is the only Phantom Thief who will appear in the background. As a result, the character who represents her in her spirit battle, Villager, does not appear in the spirit battle.
    • Additionally, Futaba Sakura is the only Phantom Thief in the Phantom Thieves of Hearts spirit battle to not appear in any capacity outside of Joker's All-Out Attack Final Smash, as she cannot appear in the background for Mementos nor does the character who represents her in her spirit battle, Inkling, appear in the spirit battle.
    • Likewise, Goro Akechi is the only Phantom Thief to not appear in any capacity outside of his spirit battle, as he does not appear in the background of Mementos or appear during Joker's All-Out Attack Final Smash, and the Marth that represents him is not present during the Phantom Thieves of Hearts spirit battle, reflecting his absence from said spirit's artwork.
  • The Phantom Thieves of Hearts battle is the first spirit battle in the game to have a DLC fighter as the puppet fighter (Joker).
  • In all versions of Ultimate, Ryuji Sakamoto's spirit does not have a Rising Sun Flag symbol on his shoe, matching a similar censoring done in the Chinese and Korean versions of Persona 5 due to the symbol being considered offensive in Asia.
  • Akechi, Igor, Caroline & Justine, and Sophia are the only Spirits who do not make a physical appearance in Ultimate.
    • Additionally, Akechi and Sophia are the only Phantom Thieves whose Phantom Thief outfits do not make an appearance as a Spirit, due to Persona 5 not having artwork of Akechi in his Crow outfit.
  • Persona is the second DLC universe to get another spirit post-launch of its respective fighter (Sophia), the first being Dragon Quest with the Tockles spirit.
    • Coincidentally, both could be obtained by having save data of a specific game on Nintendo Switch (Persona 5 Strikers and Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition).
    • Unlike the Tockles, however, Sophia was not retroactively added to the Persona spirit board. This makes her spirit the only Persona spirit that can be battled without the Challenger Pack 1 DLC.
  • The Phantom Thieves of Hearts spirit and both of Joker's fighter spirits are the second and third spirits to reuse artwork from another spirit, being Morgana and Joker in the Phantom Thieves of Hearts Spirit, and Arsène in both of Joker's fighter spirits.
